Short answer: To apply for an Italy visa from India, complete the Schengen short-stay form, book a VFS Global appointment at one of 13 Italy centres, then submit your passport, documents, fee and fingerprints. Adults pay €90 and decisions usually take 15 days. A flight reservation for visa files costs $15 per person.
Indian passport holders need a visa to visit Italy. For a holiday, a family visit or a business trip of up to 90 days, that means a short-stay Uniform Schengen Visa issued by Italy, which the Italian Foreign Ministry describes as a sticker placed in your passport that lets you enter Italy and the other Schengen countries. The Embassy of Italy in New Delhi and the Italian consulates decide, while VFS Global, their official partner in India, receives applications.
This guide is for applicants living in India whose main Schengen destination is Italy. It covers when Italy is the right country to apply to, the visa types listed for India, the documents and insurance you need, Italy's unusual published table of minimum daily funds, accommodation and hospitality proof, fees, the 13 VFS Italy centres and their hours, the phone-number rule, biometrics, processing time, entry checks at the Italian border, the Entry/Exit System, refusals and a planning timeline.
Facts come from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (esteri.it), the Embassy of Italy in New Delhi, the European Commission's Schengen visa page and the VFS Global Italy India site unless another source is named. Rules change, so confirm on those sites on the day you apply.

Which Italy Visa Do Indians Need?
The Italian Foreign Ministry's entry visa page explains that a visa issued by an Italian mission abroad for transit or a short stay of up to 90 days is the "Uniform Schengen Visa" (USV). It lets you enter Italy and the other countries that apply the Schengen Convention. A visa for more than 90 days is a "National Visa" (NV), which allows a long stay in Italy only.
The VFS Global Italy India site lists the short-stay Schengen "C" categories open to applicants in India:
| Short-stay "C" category | Typical use |
|---|---|
| Tourist | Holidays and sightseeing in Italy |
| Business | Meetings, trade fairs and company visits |
| Visiting Family and Friends | Staying with relatives or friends living in Italy |
| Invitation | Trips made on a formal invitation |
| Study, Research C, Internship C | Short courses, research stays and internships of up to 90 days |
| Sports, Religious, Transit | Events, religious purposes and transit |
| Visiting Family EU | Family members of EU citizens, such as spouses and children under 21 |
Long-stay "D" categories, such as study, employment, self-employment, family reunion and re-entry, follow different rules and are outside this guide. If your trip mixes tourism and business, choose the category that matches the main purpose, because it sets the documents you must bring.
Understanding the 90/180-Day Rule and Visa Validity
The European Commission says a Schengen visa allows a short visit of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. It can be single-entry or multiple-entry, and there is also an airport transit visa that only lets you pass through an airport's international transit area.
Italy's Foreign Ministry adds that a USV issued by another Schengen country also allows you to enter Italy, and that a long-stay National Visa allows free movement in other member states for up to 90 days per semester while it is valid. The dates and the number of days written on your visa sticker are what count; staying longer than the visa allows can affect your future applications.
If you have been in the Schengen area in the last 6 months, count your days before you apply so your planned trip fits inside the 90/180 limit.
Business Trips, Family Visits and Children
Business and trade fairs
Use the Business category for meetings, company visits and trade fairs, and add an invitation from the Italian company or the fair organiser plus a letter from your employer explaining the trip and who pays. A few extra days of sightseeing can sit inside the same short-stay visa, as long as business is the main purpose.
Visiting family or friends
If you are visiting relatives or friends who live legally in Italy, choose Visiting Family and Friends. Family members of EU citizens, such as spouses, children under 21 and dependent parents, have a separate Visiting Family EU category on the VFS site. Your host's declaration of hospitality and your itinerary should give the same dates and address.
Children
Children aged 6 to 12 pay a reduced €45 fee, and younger children may be exempt. Each child needs their own application form and passport, a parent or guardian signs for a minor, and children under 12 do not give fingerprints. Ask VFS which extra documents apply when a child travels with only one parent.
When Should You Apply to Italy and Not Another Schengen Country?
The European Commission's Schengen visa page sets the rule for choosing the country:
- If Italy is your only destination, apply to Italy.
- If you visit several Schengen countries, apply to the country where you will spend the longest time.
- If the stays are of equal length, apply to the country you will enter first.
- Apply in the country where you legally reside, which for this guide means India.
For example, a 12-day trip with 8 nights in Rome, Florence and Venice and 4 nights in Switzerland belongs with Italy. A trip with 5 nights in Italy and 7 in France belongs with France. Your hotel reservations and itinerary must support the choice, because the consulate checks that Italy really is the main destination. If you are still deciding how to split a multi-country route, our guide on whether a flight reservation is enough for a Schengen visa from India explains how to lay out the entry and exit points.
How Much Does an Italy Visa Cost From India?
The European Commission sets the Schengen visa fee for all member states, including Italy:
| Applicant | Visa fee |
|---|---|
| Adult, short-stay visa | €90 |
| Child aged 6 to 12 | €45 |
| Child under 6 | Check the VFS fee page; exemptions may apply |
| VFS Global service fee | Charged separately at the centre |
The fee is collected in Indian rupees at the exchange rate applied by the consulate, and VFS adds its own service fee for handling the file. Optional services, if you choose them, cost extra. Check the "Pay your fees" page of the VFS Italy India site for the current rupee amounts before your appointment, and keep the receipt with your file. The visa fee pays for processing, so it is not returned if the visa is refused.
What Documents Do You Need for an Italy Tourist Visa?
The European Commission lists the general documents every Schengen applicant must provide:
- A passport issued within the last 10 years, valid for at least 3 months after you leave the Schengen area, with at least two blank pages.
- A completed and signed visa application form.
- A recent photo meeting ICAO standards.
- Travel medical insurance covering emergency medical care, hospital treatment and repatriation, including in the event of death.
- Supporting documents on the purpose of the trip, your accommodation, your financial means and your intention to return to India.
- Your fingerprints, unless you gave them for a Schengen visa in the last 59 months.
For a tourist trip to Italy, the supporting documents usually include:
- A day-by-day itinerary for your time in Italy and any other Schengen country.
- Hotel reservations or, if you stay with someone, a declaration of hospitality.
- A return flight reservation showing you will leave the Schengen area.
- Bank statements for recent months and income proof such as salary slips or income tax returns.
- A cover letter explaining the purpose of the trip and who pays for it.
- Proof of your job, business or studies in India, such as an employer leave letter.
The Embassy can ask for more documents in individual cases. Our Italy tourist visa checklist explains how to time your reservation so it is still valid on your appointment day.
The Phone-Number Rule and Other VFS Form Details
The VFS Italy India visa-type page carries an Embassy notice that catches out many agent-filed applications: you must enter your own working phone number on the application form and give it at the counter, not the number of an agent or representative. The Embassy reserves the right to call that number and to treat as incomplete any application that does not comply.
Other details to check before you print your form:
- Write your name and passport number exactly as in your passport.
- Match the travel dates on the form to your itinerary, reservations and insurance.
- Give the address of your first accommodation in Italy, or your host's address if you stay with family or friends.
- Sign the form yourself; for a minor, a parent or guardian signs.
The Foreign Ministry also warns of a phishing campaign that clones its official "Visa for Italy" website. Type official addresses yourself and do not follow links in unexpected emails asking for passport or residence details.
Travel Insurance for an Italy Visa
The European Commission says Schengen applicants must hold medical insurance covering emergency medical care, hospitalisation and repatriation, including in the event of death. The policy must cover your whole stay and be valid in every Schengen country you visit.
Buy insurance from an authorised insurer, make sure the certificate shows your name, passport number, travel dates and the amount of cover, and carry a copy when you fly. If you ask for a multiple-entry visa, check the VFS checklist for how long the cover must run. Insurance dates should start on your arrival date and end on or after your departure date.
How Much Money Do You Need to Show for Italy?
Italy is one of the few Schengen countries that publishes a minimum figure. The Foreign Ministry's financial means page says foreign nationals must have adequate means of support for the length of the stay and for the return to their country, and that this is a prerequisite under the EU Visa Code. The amounts come from an Interior Ministry directive of 1 March 2000, and a 2011 interministerial decree applies the same table to business, invitation, medical, sport, religious, study and tourism visas.
The means of support table sets these minimums:
| Length of trip | One traveller | Two or more travellers |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 5 days (total fixed amount) | €269.60 | €212.81 |
| 6 to 10 days (per person per day) | €44.93 | €26.33 |
| 11 to 20 days: fixed amount | €51.64 | €25.82 |
| 11 to 20 days: plus per person per day | €36.67 | €22.21 |
| Over 20 days: fixed amount | €206.58 | €118.79 |
| Over 20 days: plus per person per day | €27.89 | Not shown |
Worked examples for a single traveller:
- A 4-day trip: €269.60 in total.
- An 8-day trip: 8 × €44.93 = €359.44.
- A 14-day trip: €51.64 + 14 × €36.67 = €565.02.
- A 25-day trip: €206.58 + 25 × €27.89 = €903.83.
These are minimums, not targets. Your bank statements, salary slips and tax returns should comfortably cover the trip you describe, including hotels, travel inside Italy and the flight home. The Foreign Ministry also says border police can check your funds on arrival and refuse entry if they are insufficient, so carry evidence of them on your trip.
Documents by Applicant Type
The general list applies to everyone, but the way you prove funds and ties to India depends on your situation. These are common ways Indian applicants answer the questions Italy asks about money and return:
Salaried employees
- Bank statements for recent months showing salary credits.
- Salary slips and income tax returns (ITR or Form 16).
- A letter from your employer confirming your job, salary and approved leave dates.
Self-employed and business owners
- Personal and business bank statements showing regular income.
- Business registration, GST or tax documents showing the business is active in India.
- For business trips, an invitation letter from the Italian company or event organiser.
Students and retired applicants
- Students: a letter from the school or college confirming enrolment and the break dates, plus a parent's funds evidence if they pay.
- Retired applicants: pension statements and bank statements showing how the trip will be paid.
Sponsored trips
If a relative pays, add their bank statements, a signed sponsorship letter and proof of your relationship. The funds still need to meet the Italian means of support table for your trip length.
Whatever your situation, the itinerary, accommodation, insurance dates and funds should tell one consistent story about a short trip with a return to India.
Accommodation and the Declaration of Hospitality
The financial means page also asks you to show suitable accommodation in Italy. It gives two common forms of proof: a hotel reservation or a declaration of hospitality from the person you will stay with.
- Hotel stays: a reservation for every night of the trip, in your name, matching your itinerary and travel dates.
- Staying with family or friends: a declaration of hospitality from your host, with a copy of their identity document and proof of their address in Italy.
- Mixed trips: hotel reservations for some nights and a host declaration for others, with no gaps between them.
Our guide to the Italy hospitality declaration for a visa from India explains what the host should include. If you are staying in hotels, keep the hotel names and dates identical to your flight reservation. Some travellers search for a dummy ticket for the flight side; what helps is a real, checkable reservation rather than an edited document.
How to Apply for an Italy Visa From India Step by Step
- Confirm that Italy is your main Schengen destination and choose the right short-stay category.
- Check your passport: issued in the last 10 years, two blank pages and at least 3 months of validity after your planned departure.
- Gather documents: itinerary, accommodation proof, insurance, bank statements, income proof and a cover letter.
- Complete the Schengen application form with your own phone number and print it.
- Book an appointment through the VFS Global Italy India site at the centre for your area.
- Attend the appointment, submit your documents, pay the visa and service fees and give fingerprints and a photo.
- Track your application on the VFS site and collect your passport when notified.
Keep copies of everything you submit. If you notice a mistake on the form before your appointment, correct it and print a new one, because only the form presented at the counter counts.

VFS announced in October 2026 a new Italy centre in Guwahati, listed in the table above, taking submissions from 26 October 2026. Centres close on public holidays, so check the VFS Italy centre list before you travel to your appointment. The Embassy of Italy itself is at 50 E Chandragupta Marg, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi – 110 021 (Get directions), but visa files go through VFS.
Your VFS Appointment and Biometrics
At the centre, staff check your file, take your passport, collect the visa and service fees and record your biometrics. The European Commission says fingerprints are taken for most applicants and can be reused for 59 months, so a repeat applicant who gave fingerprints within that time may not need to give them again. Children under 12 do not give fingerprints.
- Arrive on time with your appointment letter, passport, printed form and two photos.
- Bring originals and copies, sorted in the order of the checklist.
- Leave large bags at home; centres limit what you can take inside.
- Keep your fee receipt; you need it to track and collect your passport.
Any optional services offered at the centre are your choice. They do not change the decision or its timing.
How Long Does an Italy Visa Take From India?
The European Commission says consulates decide within 15 calendar days. That can be extended to 45 days in individual cases, for example when more documents or an interview are needed. You can apply up to 6 months before your trip and no later than 15 days before it.
| Stage | Typical time |
|---|---|
| Getting a VFS appointment | Varies by city and season |
| Decision after submission | 15 days, up to 45 in some cases |
| Passport return | After the decision; VFS notifies you |
Summer and the Christmas period are busy months for Italy. Apply 6 to 8 weeks ahead where possible, and do not pay for non-changeable travel until your passport is back with the visa.
At the Italian Border: Entry Conditions and the EES
A visa does not guarantee entry. The Foreign Ministry's entry conditions page says travellers arriving from outside the Schengen area must:
- Present themselves at a border crossing point.
- Hold a passport valid for crossing borders.
- Have documents justifying the purpose and conditions of the stay, and prove sufficient funds for the stay and the return home.
- Hold a valid visa where required.
- Not be subject to an entry ban in the Schengen Information System, and not be a threat to public order or security.
A traveller who fails even one condition can be refused entry by the border authorities, even with a valid visa. Carry copies of your hotel reservations, insurance, return flight and funds evidence.
The Foreign Ministry's EES page says the EU Entry/Exit System has applied since 12 October 2025. It records the entries and exits of non-EU travellers on short stays, so expect your face and fingerprints to be registered at the border on your first trip under the system.
What If Your Italy Visa Is Refused?
The European Commission says a refused applicant receives the reasons for the refusal and information on how to appeal. Typical grounds include unjustified purpose, insufficient funds, no proof of accommodation or doubts about your intention to leave.
- Read the ticked grounds carefully; they show what to fix.
- You can appeal within the time limit stated in the notice, following its instructions.
- You can also make a fresh application with stronger documents, paying the fee again.
Most refusals come from mismatched or thin evidence. A new application should answer each ground directly, for example with longer bank history, a clearer itinerary or a proper hospitality declaration.
What Are Common Mistakes in Italy Visa Applications From India?
- Applying to Italy when another Schengen country is the main destination.
- Using an agent's phone number on the form instead of your own.
- Funds below the Italian means of support table for the length of the trip.
- Nights in the itinerary without a hotel reservation or host declaration.
- Insurance dates that do not cover the whole trip.
- Passports older than 10 years, or with too little validity left.
- Following links in phishing emails that copy the official "Visa for Italy" site.
- Applying less than 15 days before travel.
Planning Checklist and Timeline
- 8 to 12 weeks before travel: confirm Italy is your main destination and check your passport.
- 6 to 8 weeks before: collect bank statements and income proof, work out the minimum funds from the table, and ask your host for a declaration of hospitality if needed.
- Same weeks: draft a day-by-day itinerary with matching flight and hotel reservations, and buy Schengen insurance.
- Complete the application form with your own phone number and book a VFS appointment.
- Appointment: bring originals and copies, photos and the fees, and give biometrics.
- After about 15 days: collect your passport, check the visa dates and number of entries, then book your travel.
What Do Real Italy Visa Applications From India Look Like?
Example 1: couple from Pune, 9 days in Rome, Florence and Venice
Rohan, 33, and Sneha, 30, spend all 9 nights in Italy. Using the two-traveller rate, the table minimum is 9 × €26.33 = €236.97 each, and their statements show far more than that. They apply together at Pune with hotel reservations, a return flight reservation, insurance and leave letters. Each pays €90 plus the VFS fee.
Example 2: retired father from Chennai visiting his son in Milan
Venkat, 64, stays 25 days with his son, who sends a declaration of hospitality with a copy of his Italian residence permit. Venkat applies at Chennai with pension and bank statements covering more than the €903.83 single-traveller minimum, plus insurance and a return flight reservation.
Example 3: sales manager from Ahmedabad attending a trade fair
Kavya, 38, applies in the Business category with an invitation from the fair organiser and her employer's letter. She enters her own mobile number on the form, as the Embassy requires, and books an extra 2 days of sightseeing, which fits inside the same visa.

Book your visa reservationFrequently Asked Questions
How do I apply for an Italy visa from India?
Complete the Schengen short-stay application form, then book an appointment with VFS Global, the official partner of the Italian missions in India. At the centre, submit your passport, form, photos and supporting documents, pay the visa and service fees, and give biometrics. The Embassy or consulate decides and VFS returns your passport.
How much is the Italy visa fee for Indians?
The Schengen visa fee is €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6 to 12, collected in rupees. Children under 6 may be exempt, so check the VFS fee page. You also pay a VFS service fee at the centre, and optional services such as courier return cost extra.
How long does an Italy visa take from India?
The European Commission says decisions take 15 calendar days and can be extended to 45 days in individual cases. Apply at least 15 days and no more than 6 months before travel, and allow extra time to get a VFS appointment in the busy summer and year-end holiday months.
How much bank balance do I need for an Italy visa?
Italy publishes a minimum table. A solo traveller needs €269.60 in total for 1 to 5 days, €44.93 a day for 6 to 10 days, and fixed amounts plus daily rates for longer trips. Treat these as minimums and show statements that comfortably cover your full trip and your return.
Can I stay with family in Italy on a tourist visa?
Yes. Apply in the Visiting Family and Friends category if that is the purpose, and replace hotel reservations with a declaration of hospitality from your host. Include a copy of their identity document and proof of address in Italy, and make sure the dates match your itinerary and insurance.
Do I need a flight ticket for an Italy visa from India?
No paid ticket is needed before the decision. Your file must show the trip and how you will return, so a reservation matching your itinerary works. A BookForVisa reservation has a real PNR, costs $15 per person, stays valid 48-72 hours and allows free date changes on the booking day only.
Why must I give my own phone number for an Italy visa?
The Embassy of Italy requires each applicant to give their own working phone number on the form and at the counter, not an agent's. It may call that number to verify details, and it can treat applications that break this rule as incomplete. Check the number carefully before printing.
Friendly reminder: BookForVisa prepares flight and hotel reservations to support visa applications and onward-travel proof. Requirements vary by destination, consulate, visa category and applicant situation. A reservation supports your file; it is not a paid ticket for travel and does not guarantee visa approval or entry.
