How to Apply for a New Zealand Visa From India

How to Apply for a New Zealand Visa From India

Short answer: To apply for a New Zealand visa from India, apply online for a Visitor Visa with Immigration New Zealand, upload the India checklist documents and pay NZD 441, or lodge at a VFS centre. Most applications are decided within weeks. A flight reservation for visa files costs $15 per person.

Indian passport holders need a Visitor Visa to holiday in New Zealand, visit family or friends, or study for up to 3 months. Indians cannot use the NZeTA travel authority that citizens of visa waiver countries use, so every trip starts with a visa application to Immigration New Zealand (INZ).

This guide is written for applicants living in India. It covers how long you can stay on single-entry and multiple-entry visas, the NZD 441 cost and what it includes, the INZ checklist for India for stays under 6 months, the money you need to show, sponsors, health and character rules, how to apply online or through VFS in India, processing times, what happens at the border, and a planning checklist with examples.

Facts come from Immigration New Zealand (immigration.govt.nz), including its Visitor Visa page, Fees Guide (May 2026), International Visitor Levy page and India checklist, and from the VFS Global New Zealand India site unless another source is named. Fees and rules change, so confirm on those sites on the day you apply.

Which New Zealand Visa Do Indians Need?

INZ says people travelling on a passport from some countries must apply for a Visitor Visa to visit New Zealand. Citizens of visa waiver countries can travel with an NZeTA instead, but India is not one of them, so Indian passport holders apply for a visa before they travel. You can check this with the INZ tool on the Visitor Visa page.

The Visitor Visa lets you:

  • Holiday in New Zealand.
  • Visit family and friends in New Zealand.
  • Study for up to 3 months in any 12-month period.
  • Include your partner and dependent children in your application.

You cannot work in New Zealand on this visa, although INZ says you may be able to volunteer or work remotely for an employer or client based outside New Zealand. If you want to do business on your trip, INZ points you to the Business Visitor Visa. If you are travelling for a conference and do any activity for gain or reward that is not an exception for visitors, INZ treats it as work, which needs a work visa.

Groups travelling together for 1 month or less, such as tour groups or event delegations, may be able to use a Group Visitor Visa, where each member still pays the application fee. Students planning longer study need a student visa; our New Zealand student visa documents guide covers that route.

How Long Can You Stay on a New Zealand Visitor Visa?

INZ issues either a multiple-entry or a single-entry visa based on its assessment. The overall limit is 9 months in an 18-month period.

Visa What it allows Notes
Multiple-entry Visitor Visa Visit as many times as you want while the visa is valid, staying up to 6 months in total in each 12-month period To be eligible, you must have been out of New Zealand for at least 9 months in the 18 months before you apply
Single-entry Visitor Visa Enter once and stay up to 9 months in an 18-month period May be given if you want to visit for more than 6 months, are extending your stay, or INZ decides you do not need multiple entry

INZ calculates the 12-month and 18-month periods back from the last day you plan to be in New Zealand. If you hold a single-entry visa and leave the country, the visa expires. Your visa conditions are recorded in your eVisa, and if you plan to travel in and out, your visa must have a valid multiple-entry travel condition.

How Much Does a New Zealand Visa Cost From India?

INZ's Visitor Visa page shows a cost from NZD 441. Its Fees Guide (May 2026) explains the parts for applicants in India, which fall in the "Rest of World" band:

Charge Amount Who pays
Visitor visa application fee (Band C) NZD 300 Per application
Immigration levy NZD 41 Per application
International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) NZD 100 Per person included in the application

The Fees Guide gives a worked example: an Indian citizen and their partner applying for a visitor visa while in India pay NZD 541 in total, made up of the NZD 300 fee, the NZD 41 immigration levy and NZD 200 in IVL for two people. A solo applicant pays NZD 441.

INZ's International Visitor Levy page says the levy is charged for most visitor visas (excluding partner and dependent categories) and is paid when you apply. INZ does not return the IVL, even if it declines your application. Business Visitor Visa holders do not pay the IVL. Any optional VFS services are charged separately by VFS.

Who Can Apply: the Core Requirements

To get a Visitor Visa, INZ says you must:

  • Be in good health.
  • Be of good character.
  • Have genuine reasons for coming to New Zealand.
  • Have enough money to pay your living expenses, or have an acceptable sponsor.
  • Show you can leave New Zealand at the end of your stay.

Genuine intentions

You must be a genuine visitor and intend to leave at the end of your visit. INZ considers all the information you provide, what it knows about your personal circumstances and anything you have given it before. That is why the India checklist asks for evidence of your home-country circumstances, which we cover below. Our guide on how embassies evaluate travel intent from visa documents explains how officers read these pieces together.

Health

INZ may ask for a chest X-ray, a medical examination or both. If you are staying less than 6 months, you do not normally need a chest X-ray; for less than 12 months, you do not normally need a medical certificate. You answer health questions in the application, and INZ may still ask for evidence while processing. Evidence must be less than 3 months old when INZ receives it. If you will stay more than 6 months, you must have a chest X-ray if you are a citizen of a country that does not have a low incidence of tuberculosis or have spent more than 3 months in the last 5 years in such a country.

Character

Police certificates, less than 6 months old, are needed if you are 17 or older and your total time in New Zealand will be 24 months or longer, including past visits. They must come from countries you are a citizen of and countries where you have spent more than 5 years since turning 17. INZ may ask for a new certificate during processing.

How Much Money Do You Need for a New Zealand Visa?

INZ sets a clear figure. If you are paying for yourself, you must have at least NZD 1,000 a month of your stay, or NZD 400 a month if you have already paid for your accommodation.

Evidence can include proof of accommodation pre-payment such as prepaid hotel vouchers or receipts, bank statements or credit card statements, and bank drafts or traveller's cheques. INZ says the evidence must show that the account is in the applicant's name, which bank it is with and which currency the money is in.

The India checklist adds examples of acceptable funds evidence:

  • Bank deposit books showing a saving history.
  • Bank statements or payslips for the previous 3 months showing salary credits.
  • Credit card statements and limits.
  • Income tax returns for the last two years.
  • Any other evidence of funds in addition to the above.

If someone sponsors you

A sponsor, an individual or organisation, becomes responsible for you while you are in New Zealand. They complete the Sponsorship Form for Temporary Entry (INZ 1025), and can support it with recent bank statements, payslips, their employment agreement and ownership papers or rent receipts for your accommodation. If you apply online and have a sponsor, INZ asks you to get their sharing ID. You or your sponsor must pay for any health care you need in New Zealand, and INZ recommends full medical insurance for your stay.

What Documents Are on the INZ Checklist for India?

INZ publishes a Checklist for India for general Visitor Visa applications with an intended stay of less than 6 months. It says you do not have to provide original documents unless the checklist specifies them, and that all application forms must be signed originals. An application can include an individual, a couple, or parents with dependent children under 20 applying at the same time for the same duration.

  1. English translations of any documents not in English, made by someone who meets INZ's requirements and not by a family member or friend.
  2. A fully completed Visitor Visa application form (INZ 1017) when lodging on paper, or the online application.
  3. Two recent passport-sized colour photographs, less than 6 months old, of each person in the application (any background).
  4. The application fee.
  5. A copy of the identity pages of the passports of every person in the application.
  6. Evidence of your ability to fund your stay and your outward travel from New Zealand, such as INZ 1025 from a sponsor or the funds evidence listed above.
  7. Evidence of your relationship to any partner or dependent child included, such as a marriage certificate or birth certificate showing parents' names, plus a consent letter from a non-travelling parent.
  8. Evidence of your home-country circumstances.

Home-country circumstances

INZ asks for evidence of your work, study and living arrangements to help it decide whether you are likely to return home. Depending on your situation, this could include:

  • A letter from your employer approving your leave and confirming your return to work, plus financial evidence of your employment.
  • Business registration certificate, business licence and business tax returns if you own a business.
  • Your school or college identity card.
  • Evidence of relationships with close relatives in India.
  • Evidence of assets in India, such as your home or a business.
  • A retirement certificate or proof you receive a pension.

Optional Documents That Strengthen an Indian File

The India checklist lists documents you may also want to include:

  • A cover letter reflecting your personal circumstances: when you intend to travel, the reasons for your stay and who you are travelling with. For businesses, it should be on business letterhead, and if you travel with a partner or dependants, the business letter should name them.
  • A day-to-day itinerary of your travel plans in New Zealand.
  • Visas from countries you have travelled to before.
  • Your Aadhaar card.

INZ says it may request more information while assessing an application and may keep information and documents on file. A clear cover letter and itinerary make it easier for the officer to see a genuine holiday or family visit. Our explainer on the difference between a flight itinerary, booking and reservation helps you decide what to attach.

Some travellers search for a dummy ticket to show outward travel. INZ accepts a plane ticket, proof you have the money to buy one, or a sponsor's agreement to pay, so a real, checkable reservation is enough to show your plan; never use an edited document.

Documents by Applicant Type

The India checklist is the same for everyone, but the evidence that proves your home-country circumstances depends on your situation. Here is how its items map to common applicant types:

Salaried employees

  • Employer letter approving your leave and confirming your return to work.
  • Payslips or salary-account statements for the previous 3 months showing salary credits.
  • Income tax returns for the last two years.
  • Credit card statements and limits, if you will use cards on the trip.

Business owners and self-employed

  • Business registration certificate and business licence.
  • Business tax returns, plus personal income tax returns for two years.
  • Bank statements or deposit books showing a saving history.
  • A cover letter on business letterhead stating your travel dates, purpose and who travels with you.

Students

  • School or college identity card.
  • A parent's funds evidence, or INZ 1025 if a parent or relative in New Zealand sponsors the trip.
  • For a short course, details of the study, which must stay within 3 months in any 12-month period.

Retired applicants

  • Retirement certificate or proof you receive a pension.
  • Evidence of assets in India, such as your home.
  • Evidence of relationships with close relatives in India.

Whatever your type, make sure the trip cost, your funds and your stated length of stay add up, and that dates in your cover letter, itinerary and reservation match the application.

How to Apply for a New Zealand Visa From India Step by Step

INZ's India checklist says the best way to apply is online through its visa application service, which lets you monitor progress. Alternatively, you can lodge at a New Zealand Visa Application Centre in India run by VFS Global.

  1. Gather your documents using the India checklist and INZ's requirements, and get English translations where needed.
  2. Check your photos meet INZ's photo rules and enter identity details exactly as in your passport; INZ warns that mistakes cause delays and may lead to a decline or refusal of entry.
  3. Log in to your INZ account (or create one), fill in the application, upload documents and pay the fee and levies.
  4. Wait for INZ's decision; it will contact you if it needs more information, a medical appointment or police certificates.
  5. Check your status by logging in to your account. INZ emails you when it makes a decision.
  6. If approved, you receive an eVisa and a copy by email.

Each person in a family can be included in one application or apply separately. If family members apply separately, tell INZ they are travelling with you.

Travelling With Your Partner and Children

INZ lets you include your partner and dependent children aged 19 or younger in your Visitor Visa application, or they can apply for their own visas. The India checklist describes who can be in one application: an individual, a couple, or parents with dependent children under 20 applying at the same time for the same duration.

To include family members, INZ says you must provide evidence of your relationship, such as marriage and birth certificates, and evidence of their identity, and they must be of good character and in good health. If your dependent child is included but the child's other parent is not travelling, provide a consent letter from the non-travelling parent. Each person included pays the NZD 100 IVL, while the NZD 300 fee and NZD 41 immigration levy are charged per application.

If family members apply separately, INZ asks you to tell it they are travelling with you. School-aged children can study for up to 3 months in a calendar year on a Visitor Visa, but anything longer needs a student visa.

Where Are the New Zealand Visa Centres in India?

VFS Global runs New Zealand Visa Application Centres in India. Its centre list currently shows:

Centre Status Hours
New Delhi Open Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 15:00
Mumbai Open Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 15:00
Chandigarh Open Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 15:00
Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Cochin, Hyderabad, Kolkata Temporarily closed -

VFS notes that the New Zealand diplomatic mission does not assist with visa enquiries or status information; these go to INZ's website or contact centre. VFS also offers postal applications and passport handling for online applications, so check its site for current services and charges before you choose a route.

How Long Does a New Zealand Visa Take From India?

INZ's Visitor Visa page shows that 80% of applications are decided within 2 weeks. It also says processing is busiest between September and March, so you should apply early and include all the information it needs to avoid delays. Missing documents, medical requests and police certificates all add time.

INZ recommends that travellers do not book travel they cannot change until their Visitor Visa is approved. That is where a reservation helps: it shows planned dates and onward travel while your application is assessed. A BookForVisa reservation has a real PNR, stays valid 48-72 hours and allows free date changes on the booking day only, so order it close to submission.

What Happens When You Arrive in New Zealand?

Your visa is valid from the date you enter New Zealand if you are outside New Zealand when it is approved. You must leave before it expires.

When you arrive, INZ says you will need:

  • A ticket to leave New Zealand at the end of your stay, proof you have enough money to buy one, or a sponsor's agreement to pay for one.
  • Proof you have enough money to live on for your stay.

Everyone must also complete a New Zealand Traveller Declaration (NZTD), which you can submit from 24 hours before your journey begins if you travel by air. INZ warns you can be refused entry if you are not a genuine visitor, do not meet character requirements, have had a change in circumstances since the visa was issued, refuse photos, fingerprints or an iris scan, or cannot show onward travel or the money to leave. Every time you travel to New Zealand, you need a ticket out or proof of money to buy one, unless your visa says "Return/onward travel not required".

Staying Longer or Studying

If you are in New Zealand on a Visitor Visa and need more time for a genuine reason, you can apply for a new Visitor Visa before your current one expires. If approved, it is single-entry, and you can stay up to 9 months in an 18-month period. If your visa is about to expire while you wait, INZ will normally issue an interim visa.

On a Visitor Visa you can study for up to 3 months in any 12-month period; school-aged children can study for up to 3 months in a calendar year. If children will study for more than 2 weeks, the provider must be a signatory to the Education (Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Learners) Code of Practice 2021.

Plan any extension early. Your current visa expires when you get the new one, and the 9 months in 18 months limit still applies, counting time already spent in New Zealand. Keep your funds evidence and onward travel plan up to date, because INZ assesses the new application on the same requirements of health, character, genuine intentions and enough money to live on.

What Are Common Mistakes in New Zealand Visa Applications From India?

  • Identity details that do not exactly match the passport.
  • Funds below NZD 1,000 a month of stay, or statements not in your name.
  • Missing evidence of home-country ties, such as an employer leave letter.
  • Translations done by a family member or friend.
  • Leaving out a consent letter when a child travels with only one parent.
  • Applying late in the September to March busy period.
  • Booking travel you cannot change before approval.
  • Choosing the Visitor Visa for business or paid activity.
  • Not including the IVL in your budget; it is charged per person and is not returned.

Planning Checklist and Timeline

  1. 8 to 10 weeks before travel: confirm the Visitor Visa fits your purpose and check your passport details.
  2. 6 to 8 weeks before: collect 3 months of bank statements or payslips, tax returns, employer leave letter and relationship documents; ask any sponsor to complete INZ 1025.
  3. Same weeks: write a cover letter and day-to-day itinerary, and get a flight reservation that matches it.
  4. Apply online with INZ (or book VFS in New Delhi, Mumbai or Chandigarh) and pay NZD 441 per person.
  5. Respond quickly to any INZ request for medicals, police certificates or more documents.
  6. After approval: check your eVisa conditions, book travel and complete the NZTD within 24 hours before flying.

What Do Real New Zealand Visa Applications From India Look Like?

Example 1: couple from Pune, 12-day holiday

Rohan, 36, and Sneha, 34, plan 12 days in Auckland, Rotorua and Queenstown. They apply online in one application, paying NZD 541 for two. They upload salary-account statements for 3 months, two years of income tax returns, employer leave letters, their marriage certificate, a cover letter and a day-to-day itinerary with a flight reservation showing their return.

Example 2: parents from Delhi visiting their son

Suresh, 64, and Kamala, 60, plan 3 months with their son, who lives in Auckland. Their son completes INZ 1025 and adds his bank statements, payslips and rental receipts. They add pension proof, property documents in India and photos of their family ties, and apply well before the September to March peak.

Example 3: student from Chandigarh, short course

Aman, 21, joins a 6-week English course. He applies for a Visitor Visa because the study is under 3 months, includes his college ID, his father's statements as sponsor with INZ 1025, and the course offer.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I apply for a New Zealand visa from India?

Apply online for a Visitor Visa through your Immigration New Zealand account, upload the documents on the INZ checklist for India, and pay the fee and levies. You can also lodge at a VFS centre in New Delhi, Mumbai or Chandigarh. INZ emails you when it decides, and approved applicants receive an eVisa.

How much is the New Zealand visa fee for Indians?

An Indian applying from India pays NZD 441 per person: a NZD 300 application fee, a NZD 41 immigration levy and the NZD 100 International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy. A couple in one application pays NZD 541. The levy is charged per person and is not returned if INZ declines the application.

How long can I stay on a New Zealand Visitor Visa?

A multiple-entry Visitor Visa lets you stay up to 6 months in total in each 12-month period, while a single-entry visa allows one entry and up to 9 months in an 18-month period. INZ decides which type to issue. If you leave New Zealand on a single-entry visa, it expires.

How much bank balance do I need for a New Zealand visa?

INZ asks for at least NZD 1,000 for each month of your stay, or NZD 400 a month if your accommodation is already paid. Show statements in your name with the bank and currency, or salary credits, tax returns and credit card limits. Otherwise a sponsor completes the Sponsorship Form for Temporary Entry.

Do I need a flight ticket for a New Zealand visa from India?

No paid ticket is required. INZ accepts a plane ticket, proof you have money to buy one, or a sponsor's agreement to pay, and recommends not booking travel you cannot change before approval. A BookForVisa reservation has a real PNR, costs $15 per person and stays valid 48-72 hours.

How long does a New Zealand visa take from India?

INZ shows that 80% of Visitor Visa applications are decided within 2 weeks. Processing is busiest between September and March, so apply early and include every document INZ needs. Requests for medical checks, police certificates or more information can add time, so respond quickly to any message from INZ.

Do Indians need a medical or X-ray for a New Zealand visitor visa?

Not normally for short trips. INZ says stays under 6 months do not normally need a chest X-ray and stays under 12 months do not normally need a medical certificate. Stays over 6 months need an X-ray for citizens of countries without a low tuberculosis incidence. Evidence must be under 3 months old.

Friendly reminder: BookForVisa prepares flight and hotel reservations to support visa applications and onward-travel proof. Requirements vary by destination, consulate, visa category and applicant situation. A reservation supports your file; it is not a paid ticket for travel and does not guarantee visa approval or entry.
