How to Apply for a Switzerland Visa From India

How to Apply for a Switzerland Visa From India

Short answer: To apply for a Switzerland visa from India, fill in the Schengen form, book VFS Global, then submit your documents in the exact checklist order with fingerprints and the €90 fee. Insurance must come from an Embassy-approved Indian insurer. A flight reservation for visa costs $15 per person.

Indian passport holders need a Schengen short-stay visa to visit Switzerland for tourism, family visits, business or short courses. Switzerland is one of the 29 Schengen countries, so a Swiss visa also lets you travel across the Schengen area, for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Every application made anywhere in India is decided by the Embassy of Switzerland in New Delhi, and VFS Global receives applications and returns passports.

Switzerland's rules for Indian applicants are stricter than most Schengen countries in a few places that catch people out: travel insurance is accepted only from a list of approved Indian insurance companies, only the ITR-V or acknowledgement is accepted as tax proof, bank documents must be originals on A4 paper with the bank's stamp, and the file must follow the exact order on the checklist without staples. This guide walks through each step, the full tourist checklist, fees in euro and rupees, all VFS centres with directions, processing times and what to do if your visa is refused. If Italy is your main destination instead, see our Italy visa from India guide.

Facts come from the VFS Global Switzerland India information page and tourist checklist issued by the Embassy of Switzerland to India and Bhutan, the Embassy's own visa pages, and the European Commission's Schengen pages. Check them on the day you apply, because requirements change.

Which Switzerland Visa Do Indians Need?

For a visit of up to 90 days you need a Schengen short-stay visa. The VFS Global Switzerland India information page lists these short-stay categories:

  • Tourist: holidays and sightseeing.
  • Visitor: visiting family or friends in Switzerland.
  • Business: meetings, trade fairs and similar business visits.
  • Incentive tour: company reward trips.
  • Students for up to 90 days: short courses.
  • Work permit for up to 120 days in 12 months, which needs separate authorisation.

Longer stays, such as family reunification, study for more than 90 days or work for more than 120 days, need a national "D" visa. Student visas for more than 90 days are submitted in person at the Visa Section of the Embassy, by appointment.

The short-stay visa lets you stay in Switzerland for an uninterrupted period, or several stays, that together do not exceed 90 days in any 180 days. Because Switzerland is in the Schengen area, the same visa covers travel to the other Schengen countries, which have no border controls between them.

Is Switzerland your main destination?

Apply to Switzerland only if it is the main destination of your trip, meaning the country where you spend the most nights, or the main purpose of your visit is there. If you spend equal time in several countries, apply to the one you enter first. Read our guide on whether a flight reservation is enough for a Schengen visa from India for how your itinerary shows your main destination.

Who can apply in India?

The Embassy of Switzerland says applicants should be legally residing and working in India for at least the last six months to apply with the Swiss representation in India. Holders of a Certificate of Identity or Identity Certificate must also include a valid Residence Certificate and a valid return visa.

Step-by-Step: How to Apply From India

  1. Check your timing. Short-stay applications cannot be submitted more than 180 days before travel and must be submitted at least 15 calendar days before. Apply earlier ahead of holiday periods.
  2. Fill in the application form. Download the current Swiss Schengen "C" visa application form, which is free of charge, complete it, and sign it. Old versions of the form are not accepted. You must also complete the authorisation form that VFS lists with the application form.
  3. Collect your documents using the Embassy's tourist checklist below, and arrange them in the exact order given on the checklist. Do not staple any document.
  4. Book a VFS Global appointment at the Switzerland centre most convenient for you.
  5. Attend the appointment. Submit your file and passport, give fingerprints and a facial image if needed, and pay the visa fee and VFS service charge.
  6. Sign the courier consent. On the Embassy's instruction, each applicant must sign a "Declaration of Consent Courier". A representative or travel agent must bring the signed declaration when submitting.
  7. Wait for the decision and collect your passport from VFS or receive it by courier.

Applying directly at the Embassy

Short-stay applications can also be made directly at the Embassy of Switzerland in New Delhi, but only with a prior appointment requested by email. Telephone requests are not entertained, and the appointment must be requested at least one month before your planned travel date. Family members of Swiss, EU or EFTA citizens may also submit directly at the responsible Swiss Embassy or Consulate, again by appointment only.

Biometrics and the 59-month rule

Since 2 November 2015, all Schengen missions in India capture fingerprints and a facial image, and the data is kept in the Visa Information System for 5 years. If your fingerprints have not been collected yet, you must appear in person. Children under 12 do not need to appear or give fingerprints.

If your fingerprints were collected within the last 59 months and you were granted a visa marked "VIS", you do not need to give new fingerprints and do not need to appear in person. You must still return if your earlier fingerprints prove to be of poor quality, and the Embassy may ask you to attend a personal interview after checking your file.

Switzerland Tourist Visa Documents From India

The Embassy's tourist checklist, published on the VFS Switzerland India site, asks for these items. Submit them in this order, unstapled.

1. Passport

  • Issued within the last 10 years.
  • Valid for at least 3 months after your planned return.
  • At least 2 blank pages.
  • Handwritten passports, and Indian passports issued after 1 April 2010 that are not machine readable, are not accepted.
  • Passports with a manual observation, made after 1 April 2010, that changes your biographical data (name, date of birth, place of birth, sex, spouse's name, parents' names or address) are not accepted.

If your passport carries the handwritten observation "previously known as", bring one of: your original previous passport with the old name, a copy of the old passport's data page with the old name, or a copy of the newspaper advertisement for your change of name. Do not bind two or more passports with a stapler; use rubber bands instead.

2. Photo

One recent colour passport photo, not older than 6 months, 35 to 40 mm wide, on a white or off-white background. It must be printed on normal photographic paper, not copied or scanned, with a full face, no smile, and no sunglasses or head covering unless worn for religious reasons. Paste the photo on the application form; stapled or pinned photos are not accepted. If the photo does not meet the rules, the application is considered incomplete. VFS centres have a photo booth that meets the requirements.

3. Application form

Completed and signed by you, with the authorisation of a third person if someone submits for you. For a minor, the form must be signed by the legal guardian or guardians, with proof of custody where relevant, such as divorce papers or a death certificate.

4. Introduction letter

An original letter on your employer's business letterhead, signed and stamped by HR or the management. It must state your position and length of service, give a "no objection" statement for your trip to Switzerland and the Schengen states, and mention your travel dates and the purpose of the trip.

5. Travel insurance

  • Issued by one of the Indian insurance companies on the Embassy's list of approved insurers. Since 1 February 2018, policies from other companies are not accepted for applications made in India.
  • Minimum cover of €30,000 per person.
  • Must cover repatriation for medical reasons, urgent medical attention and emergency hospital treatment.
  • Must cover your entire stay in the Schengen area. If you apply for a six-month or one-year multiple-entry visa, a policy covering the first journey is enough.

6. Flight reservation

A flight reservation showing the names of all travellers. If you will move between Schengen countries, include proof of intra-Schengen flights, train tickets or car rental.

7. Proof of accommodation

Confirmation of hotel reservations, package tours or advance payments for your stay in Switzerland and any other Schengen state.

Switzerland visa documents from India laid out unstapled in checklist order: stamped A4 bank statements, salary slips, insurance certificate, employer letter and passport

Financial Documents: Originals, A4 and ITR-V Only

All financial documents must be originals, on A4 paper, with the stamp and signature of the bank. VFS repeats this instruction from the Embassy for personal bank statements, and says no other format will be accepted at the counter.

Your situation Documents the checklist asks for
Employed Last 3 months' salary slips; last 3 months' personal bank statements showing the salary credited; personal ITR for the last 2 assessment years.
Self-employed or company owner Business registration certificate, GST registration with annex A and B, partnership deed, proof of proprietorship or other proof of ownership; last 3 months' personal bank statements; personal ITR for the last 2 assessment years.
Retired Personal pension bank statement for the last 3 months; proof of regular income from property or a business.

The ITR-V rule

For income tax returns, only the ITR-V (the Indian Income Tax Return Verification Form) or the acknowledgement is accepted. A full return printout or computation sheet does not replace it. Download the ITR-V or acknowledgement for each of the last 2 assessment years from the income tax portal and print it on A4.

How much money do you need?

The checklist does not set a minimum bank balance for India. Your statements should show regular income and enough funds to cover your trip, matching the itinerary, hotel bookings and the dates in your introduction letter.

Families, Students and Children

Families travelling together

Family applications must be submitted together. Only the head of the family needs to attach the bank statements, personal ITR-V, travel insurance naming all insured family members, the flight booking naming all travelling family members, and the hotel confirmations, if all rooms are under one booking in the head of family's name.

Students above 16

Include a copy of the student's college ID card and an introduction letter from the school, college or university.

Children under 18

  • Not travelling with both parents: a consent letter from the non-travelling parent or legal guardian, certified by a public notary.
  • Travelling alone: a consent letter from both parents or legal guardians, certified by a public notary.
  • In all cases: a copy of the passport of both parents or legal guardians, or their PAN card or driving licence.

Visitor and Business Visas: What Changes

The visitor and business checklists published on the VFS Switzerland India site use most of the tourist items above, with a few important differences.

Visiting family or friends

Instead of relying on hotel bookings alone, add an invitation letter from your host in Switzerland. It must:

  • Give the host's full name, address, email and phone number.
  • Be the original or a clear copy, dated and signed.
  • Name all the people invited, the length of stay, your relationship and the purpose of the invitation.
  • Come with a copy of the host's passport, identity card, OCI card or Swiss residence permit.

For self-employed visitors, the visitor checklist asks for both company and personal ITR-V for the last 2 assessment years, not only the personal return. For a family visiting relatives, the head of family's documents cover everyone, together with the invitation letter.

Business trips

The employer's introduction letter must name you, give your position, length of service, the dates and purpose of the trip, and state whether your employer or company is paying the expenses. Add an invitation letter from your business partner in Switzerland with their full details, signed and stamped, giving your details, the dates and purpose of the trip, and a day-to-day schedule of the meetings or training.

Spouses and children travelling with a business traveller should submit their documents using the checklist that fits their own purpose, such as the tourist or visitor checklist.

Switzerland Visa Fees for Indians

The VFS Switzerland India page lists the visa fee in euro and rupees. The rupee amount follows the current exchange rate and can change without notice.

Applicant Visa fee (EUR) Visa fee (INR)
Adult €90 INR 9,400
Child aged 6 to 12 €45 INR 4,700
Child under 6 Free Free

VFS service charges and optional services

VFS adds its own service charge, including GST. The VFS Switzerland information page lists it as INR 2,690, while the individual centre pages checked on 5 November 2026 showed INR 3,100, so confirm the amount for your centre before you go. Fees and charges can be paid by cash, card or online.

Optional VFS service Charge
Courier return of passport INR 930
SMS updates INR 450
SMS plus courier combo INR 1,250
Premium lounge (not at Jaipur, Kolkata or Jalandhar) INR 4,600
Walk-in without appointment, subject to availability INR 3,105

The visa fee is a processing fee and does not depend on the outcome. Paying for optional services does not affect the Embassy's decision.

Embassy of Switzerland in India

The Embassy is at Nyaya Marg Chanakyapuri New Delhi 110 021 India Get directions. The Consular Section, where long-stay and direct appointments are handled, is at Chandragupta Marg Chanakyapuri New Delhi 110021 India Get directions.

The Embassy's visa section does not take visa queries by phone. For documentation and status, use the VFS Global Switzerland website. For a specific question about the visa procedure, the Embassy gives the email address newdelhi.visa@eda.admin.ch; for C visa status, contact VFS.

Processing Time

VFS says the usual processing time is 15 calendar days, counted from when the Embassy receives your complete application, not including transport time from the VFS centre. The Embassy's own pages give 10 to 15 days after the file arrives at the Embassy, subject to completeness.

The period can be extended when the Embassy needs to look at a file more closely, for example to interview you or request more documents, and it can be longer at busy times of the year. Some Schengen states require that they be consulted on applications from certain nationalities, and that consultation can take up to 14 calendar days. VFS recommends applying at least two weeks before travel, and earlier before holiday periods.

Possible outcomes

  • The visa is granted.
  • Further documents are requested.
  • You are asked to attend a personal interview.
  • The application is rejected.

VFS has no role in the processing time or the decision; both are entirely for the Embassy.

Planning Your Timeline

Switzerland's 180-day and 15-day limits give you a wide window, but busy seasons in India, such as the summer holidays and the year-end break, fill VFS appointment slots quickly. A practical plan for a trip in late May looks like this:

When What to do
3 to 4 months before travel Confirm your itinerary and main destination; check your passport for age, validity, blank pages and any observation.
10 to 12 weeks before Ask your employer for the introduction letter; download your ITR-V or acknowledgement for the last 2 assessment years.
8 to 10 weeks before Buy insurance from an approved insurer; get stamped original A4 bank statements and salary slips for the last 3 months.
6 to 8 weeks before Complete and sign the form and authorisation, take a compliant photo, and book your VFS appointment.
Appointment day Get your flight reservation naming all travellers and hotel confirmations, arrange the file in checklist order and submit.
3 to 5 weeks before Allow 15 calendar days at the Embassy plus transport time and possible extra checks before you pay for flights.

If you need to travel at short notice, remember the 15-day minimum and the extra time a request for documents or an interview can add. Starting early costs nothing and protects your dates.

Flight Reservations for Your Switzerland File

The checklist asks for a flight reservation with the names of all travellers, plus proof of any intra-Schengen travel. You do not need to buy a paid ticket before the decision. A reservation with a real PNR lets the Embassy see your route while you wait.

  • BookForVisa reservations cost a flat $15 per person and include a real PNR that can be checked.
  • Each reservation is valid for 48-72 hours, so time it close to your VFS appointment.
  • Date changes are free on the booking day only.
  • It can be issued even while you are at the visa centre.
  • It works for visa applications and for onward-travel proof.

For a family file, make sure every family member is named on the same reservation, as the checklist asks. If you prefer another provider, a dummy ticket service with a verifiable reservation serves the same purpose; whichever you use, the dates must match your form, introduction letter, insurance and hotel bookings.

Common Mistakes Indian Applicants Make

  • Insurance from an unlisted company. Only insurers on the Embassy's approved list are accepted for applications made in India.
  • Full ITR printouts instead of ITR-V. Only the ITR-V or acknowledgement is accepted.
  • Downloaded bank statements. Statements must be originals on A4 with the bank's stamp and signature.
  • Stapled files. Do not staple documents or passports, and keep the checklist order.
  • Extra paperwork. Only the documents on the checklist are accepted, and documents cannot be sent to the Embassy later by fax or email.
  • Problem passports. Handwritten passports, passports older than 10 years and passports with a data-changing observation are not accepted.
  • Photos that fail the rules. A stapled, scanned or wrong-size photo makes the application incomplete.
  • Weak employer letter. It must be an original on letterhead, signed and stamped, with a no-objection statement and your travel dates.
  • Wrong main destination. Apply to Switzerland only if it is where you spend the most time.

The Embassy also reserves the right to ask for additional documents or an interview, so keep copies of everything you submit.

If Your Switzerland Visa Is Refused

If the Embassy rejects your application, you receive a written decision giving the reasons. Under Schengen rules, a refused applicant has the right to appeal, and the decision explains how and where to do this and the deadline. You can also apply again with a stronger file that addresses each reason.

Before reapplying, check the most common Swiss problems above: insurance from an approved insurer, ITR-V for 2 assessment years, stamped original statements, a complete employer letter and an itinerary that shows Switzerland as your main destination.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I apply for a Switzerland visa from India?

Complete and sign the Swiss Schengen C visa form and authorisation form, then book a VFS Global Switzerland appointment. Submit your passport and documents in the exact checklist order, unstapled, give fingerprints if needed, and pay the fee. The Embassy of Switzerland in New Delhi decides every application made in India.

How much is the Switzerland visa fee for Indians?

The Schengen visa fee is €90, listed by VFS as INR 9,400, for adults and €45, or INR 4,700, for children aged 6 to 12. Children under 6 pay nothing. VFS adds a service charge including GST, and optional services such as courier return, SMS updates and the premium lounge cost extra.

How long does a Switzerland visa take from India?

VFS says processing usually takes 15 calendar days from when the Embassy receives a complete file, not counting transport time. It can take longer if you are interviewed, more documents are requested, or other Schengen states must be consulted, which can take up to 14 days. Apply at least 15 days ahead.

Which travel insurance is accepted for a Swiss visa from India?

For applications made in India, the Embassy accepts travel insurance only from Indian companies on its approved list. Cover must be at least €30,000 per person, include medical repatriation, urgent care and emergency hospital treatment, and cover your entire Schengen stay. Policies from other insurers are not accepted with the application.

Which ITR is accepted for a Switzerland visa?

Only the ITR-V, the Indian Income Tax Return Verification Form, or the acknowledgement is accepted, for the last 2 assessment years. Employed applicants add 3 months of salary slips and bank statements showing salary credits, all as originals on A4 paper. Self-employed applicants add business registration or GST registration documents.

Do I need a flight ticket for a Switzerland visa?

No paid ticket is needed. The checklist asks for a flight reservation showing the names of all travellers. A BookForVisa reservation has a real PNR, costs $15 per person, stays valid 48-72 hours and allows free date changes on the booking day only, so it can match your form dates.

Can I apply at the Swiss Embassy instead of VFS?

Yes, but only with a prior appointment requested from the Embassy of Switzerland in New Delhi by email, at least one month before your travel date. Phone requests are not entertained. Most applicants apply through VFS Global, which receives files across India and forwards them to the Embassy for a decision.

Friendly reminder: BookForVisa prepares flight and hotel reservations to support visa applications and onward-travel proof. Requirements vary by destination, consulate, visa category and applicant situation. A reservation supports your file; it is not a paid ticket for travel and does not guarantee visa approval or entry.
