Short answer: To apply for an Ireland visa from India, complete the AVATS online form, print and sign the summary page, pay the fee, then hand in original documents at a VFS Global centre within 30 days. A single-entry visa costs €60 and decisions take about 8 weeks. A flight reservation for visa costs $15 per person.
Indian passport holders need a visa to visit Ireland, even for a few days. Ireland is not part of the Schengen area, so a Schengen visa does not let you in, and an Irish visa does not let you enter France or Germany. For holidays, family visits, short courses, conferences and business meetings of up to 90 days you need the Irish short-stay "C" visa, decided by Ireland's Immigration Service Delivery (ISD), with VFS Global receiving applications in India.
Earlier BookForVisa posts cover the tourist document checklist and the proposed travel dates on the AVATS form. This guide covers the full route from India from start to finish: which visa you need, whether a UK visa can take you to Ireland instead, every AVATS step, the original-document and translation rules, the bank statement rules, the €60 and €100 fees, VFS centres with addresses and directions, the 8-week wait, and what happens after a refusal, where Ireland has no appeal for short visits.
Facts come from the official Irish immigration site, irishimmigration.ie, and the VFS Global Ireland India site unless another source is named. Ireland often changes procedures, so check both sites on the day you apply.

Which Ireland Visa Do Indians Need?
Irish immigration's short-stay visa page says a "C" visa is for visits of up to 90 days. You can use it to:
- Go on holiday or visit friends and family.
- Attend a short course of study.
- Get married or enter a civil partnership.
- Receive medical treatment.
- Attend a conference, event or business meeting, under the conference and business categories.
You cannot work on a short-stay visa, and you cannot use publicly funded services such as hospital care paid by the state. If you plan to stay longer than 90 days, for example to study a full course, you need a long-stay "D" visa instead, which this guide does not cover.
Choose the category that matches your main reason. A tourist visa is for sightseeing on your own plan. A visit (family or friend) visa is for staying with or visiting people you know in Ireland, and it needs an invitation letter from them. If you are going for a business meeting, use the business category with a letter from the company you will meet. The documents differ by category, so picking the wrong one is one of the easiest ways to slow your file down.
Ireland is not Schengen
This trips up many first-time travellers. Ireland and the UK form the Common Travel Area, separate from the 29-country Schengen area. A Schengen visa from France, Italy or Germany does not let you enter Ireland, and an Irish visa does not let you enter any Schengen country. If you want to visit Dublin and Paris on one trip, you need two separate visas, and Ireland asks you to state that plan in a letter, as covered below.
Can You Visit Ireland Without an Irish Visa?
Indian nationals have two official alternatives to a separate Irish visa. Both depend on the UK, and both are worth checking before you start an AVATS form.
The British Irish Visa Scheme (BIVS)
The British Irish Visa Scheme lets certain people travel around Ireland and the UK on one short-stay visa. Indian nationals living in India at the time of the application are eligible. Irish visit (family or friend), visit (tourist), conference or event and business visas can be endorsed with the letters "BIVS", as can most UK standard visitor visas.
A visa officer decides whether to add the BIVS endorsement, and there is no appeal against a decision not to add it. If you hold an Irish visa endorsed BIVS, you must enter Ireland first. If you hold a BIVS UK visa, you must enter the UK first. On a single-entry BIVS visa you may move between Ireland and the UK several times on one journey, and you may leave the Common Travel Area from either country. When you apply for an Irish visa under the scheme you must show that Ireland is your primary destination.
If you arrive in Ireland across the land border from Northern Ireland, you must report to an immigration officer at Dundalk Immigration Office, a port of entry at Dublin Airport or Port, or a local Garda immigration office within 30 days, or within 7 days if you are doing business.
The Short-Stay Visa Waiver Programme
India is on the list of countries in Ireland's short stay visa waiver programme. If you hold an eligible UK short-stay visa, you may visit Ireland for under 90 days without an Irish visa, within the time left on your UK permission. The rules are strict:
- You must first land in the UK and be given permission to stay there before you travel to Ireland. You cannot fly from India straight to Dublin on a UK visa the first time.
- Your visit to Ireland must end before your UK permission ends.
- Your stay in Ireland is limited to 90 days or the time left on your UK permission, whichever is shorter.
- UK transit visas and visas for marriage or civil partnership do not count, and a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) cannot be used.
- The scheme is not reciprocal: an Irish visa does not let you enter the UK.
If neither option fits your plan, apply for an Irish short-stay visa as described below.
Step-by-Step: How to Apply From India
Irish immigration's process for Indian applicants has four steps that must happen in order. Missing the 30-day window in step 4 is a common reason files are delayed.
- Fill in the AVATS online form. Use the official AVATS (Automated Visa Application and Tracking System) on irishimmigration.ie. Each person needs a separate application, including children; there are no family or group visas and no e-visas.
- Print the summary page. When you submit the form you get a summary application form with your Visa Application Transaction Number. Print it, then sign and date it by hand.
- Pay the visa fee in the way your application office tells you. In India this is done through VFS Global, which also adds its own service charge.
- Send your documents within 30 days. Submit the signed summary page, your passport, photos and all supporting documents at your VFS Global centre within 30 days of completing the AVATS form. Your biometrics may also be taken.
Irish immigration recommends applying up to 3 months before your planned travel date. Do not apply too close to departure, because the decision can take 8 weeks.
Rules that apply to every document
- Submit originals, not photocopies, unless a copy is specifically requested.
- Documents not in English or Irish need a certified translation attached.
- Letters from employers, colleges and businesses must be on headed paper with a full address and a landline phone number. Free email addresses such as Yahoo or Hotmail are not accepted on business letters.
- Signatures on letters must be handwritten, not printed or pasted.
- Missing documents can lead to a refusal, so check every item before you go to VFS.

Documents for an Ireland Tourist Visa From India
The official tourist visa page lists the documents below. Visit (family or friend), business and conference applications use most of the same items plus a letter from the person or company you are visiting.
Passport and previous passports
- Your current passport, valid for at least 6 months after the date you plan to leave Ireland.
- A photocopy of every page of all your previous passports, where you still have them. Irish immigration says your application will be delayed if you leave these out.
- If you are not an Indian citizen but live in India, proof of your permission to be in India, valid for at least 3 months after you leave Ireland.
Photos
Include colour photos that meet Ireland's visa photo rules. On the back of each, sign your name in your native script and write your Visa Application Transaction Number from AVATS.
Holiday plan and accommodation
Type or write a description of your planned holiday, including where you will stay. Include printed reservation confirmations from hotels, guesthouses, hostels, B&Bs or holiday rentals, and they must show the dates you will stay at each place. If you will stay with friends or family, include their invitation letter instead.
Travel to or from another country
If you will reach Ireland from a third country or travel on from Ireland to another country, write a letter describing that route and say whether you need visas for those countries. Apply for those visas before your Irish visa where relevant, because Irish immigration may refuse a visa if your passport does not contain the expected visas.
Proof of visa fee payment
Some offices ask you to include proof that you paid the fee. Your VFS centre will tell you what is needed.
Previous refusals
If you have ever been refused a visa or preclearance for any country, give details and include the original refusal letter. Irish immigration states that not disclosing past refusals will result in your application being refused. If you have been deported, refused entry or required to leave any country, including for overstaying, include the original documents and a full explanation.
Finances and Bank Statements
You must show you have enough money to support yourself in Ireland. Irish immigration says there is no minimum amount; the visa officer decides based on your circumstances. That means your statement should match the trip you describe: a two-week stay in Dublin hotels needs more money than a week with family who host you.
Rules for your bank statement
- Original, on headed bank paper. A printed internet statement is accepted only if it is officially certified by your bank; uncertified internet statements are not accepted.
- Shows your name and address.
- Shows the account number and type, such as savings or current account.
- Shows money paid in and out over the last 6 months.
- For a savings or deposit account, include an original bank letter on headed paper confirming you can withdraw the money.
- Add a written explanation of any large deposits or withdrawals.
If someone in Ireland is paying
If a friend or family member in Ireland is helping to pay, write an estimate in euro of what they will cover, such as air tickets or accommodation. They must send you original documents proving they can afford it: an up-to-date bank statement following the same rules, and if employed, their 3 most recent payslips, their latest tax return document and a letter from their employer. This applies even when the host is an Irish citizen.
Travel and medical insurance
You do not usually need to send insurance with your application, but the visa officer may ask for it before deciding. If your visa is approved, you must have travel or medical insurance before you travel and show it to the immigration officer at the airport or seaport if asked. Irish immigration says you will not be able to enter Ireland without it.
Proving You Will Return to India
Because a C visa is for visits of less than 90 days, you must show strong family, social or economic ties to India. The official page lists these documents:
| Your situation | What to include |
|---|---|
| Employed | Your 3 most recent payslips and a letter from your employer stating how long you have worked there, the dates you will be away and the date you return to work. |
| Student | A college letter stating your course, how long you have studied there, how many years or terms remain, and that you will return after your visit. |
| Family in India | Details of family members living in India; if your dependent children stay at home, their birth certificates. |
| Property | Evidence of property you own or rent, such as a title deed or tenancy agreement. |
Employer letters must follow the general letter rules above: headed paper, full address, landline number and a handwritten signature. A letter sent from a free email address such as Yahoo or Hotmail does not meet the business letter rules.
Invitation Letters for Family and Friend Visits
If you are visiting someone in Ireland, their invitation letter must give their full name and address and explain your relationship and the purpose of the visit. It must include a clear colour copy of the photo page of their passport or national identity card, including for Irish citizens. The letter must also include a statement from your host confirming they understand the conditions you must follow during your visit.
If your host is not an EU, EEA or Swiss citizen, the letter must include a colour copy of their current Irish Residence Permit and of the current immigration permission stamp in their passport. Add documentary evidence of your relationship, such as letters, emails, photos together or proof of previous visits.
Ireland Visa Fees for Indians
Irish immigration's visa fees page sets these standard fees. Fees are not returned if the application is withdrawn or refused.
| Visa | Fee |
|---|---|
| Single entry | €60 |
| Multiple entry | €100 |
| Transit | €25 |
In India you pay at VFS Global, which also charges its own service fee, so check the current amounts on the VFS Ireland India site before your appointment. The fee covers the cost of processing your application. Your AVATS summary form tells you where to pay, and extra charges for submitting documents may apply.
Some applicants do not pay the visa fee. India is not on the list of nationalities exempt from fees, but these groups are exempt on production of the required documents: the spouse or civil partner of an Irish citizen, a widow or widower of an Irish citizen, and children or adopted children under 18 of an Irish citizen. Qualifying family members of EU, EEA or Swiss citizens who travel with or join that citizen in Ireland, such as a spouse, a child under 21 or a dependent parent, are also exempt if they include evidence such as a signed letter from the EU family member, a copy of their passport and proof of the relationship.
Irish immigration says multiple-entry visas are granted only in limited circumstances. Ask for one only if your travel pattern supports it.

Embassy of Ireland, New Delhi
The Embassy of Ireland is at Thapar House, 124, Janpath Rd, Connaught Place, New Delhi, 110001 India Get directions. Its visa office does not run a public counter, so do not take your documents there; all applications go through VFS Global.
Processing Time and Tracking
Irish immigration says the decision usually takes about 8 weeks from the date your application is received in the visa office, and some applications take longer. Plan backwards from your travel date: if you travel in mid-June, apply in March or April.
You can follow progress on the VFS Global tracking page using your reference number.
Why you should not buy tickets yet
Irish immigration's advice is direct: wait for approval before you buy any travel tickets. That protects you if the decision is a refusal or takes longer than expected. Your holiday plan still needs to show how you will travel and when you will return, which is where a reservation helps. For applicants who also need proof of onward travel, a dummy ticket from a verifiable source plays the same role.
Flight Reservations for Your Ireland Visa File
Your file should give dates that match across the AVATS form, the holiday plan, accommodation bookings and your flight details. Because Ireland advises against buying tickets before approval, a flight reservation with a real PNR lets you show your planned route without paying for a full ticket.
- BookForVisa reservations cost a flat $15 per person and include a real PNR that can be checked.
- Each reservation is valid for 48-72 hours, so time it close to your VFS appointment.
- Date changes are free on the booking day only, which helps if your AVATS dates are still being finalised.
- It can be issued even while you are at the visa centre if VFS asks for travel details.
- It works for visa applications and for onward-travel proof.
Keep the dates on your reservation identical to the "proposed dates" on your AVATS form. A mismatch between the form and the travel plan is one of the easiest problems for a visa officer to notice.

If Your Ireland Visa Is Refused
A refusal letter gives the reasons for the decision. For short-stay visas, Ireland has no appeal process. Instead, you can make a new application that addresses the reasons given, with new or better documents and a new fee.
Before reapplying, read every reason in the letter and fix each one. Check the rules above for the documents the letter mentions, such as certified bank statements, previous passport copies, evidence of ties to India or a clear travel plan. Declare the earlier refusal on your new application and include the refusal letter, because hiding it leads to another refusal.
Irish immigration also warns that submitting false or misleading documents can lead to a refusal and a ban on future applications for 5 years.
Common Mistakes Indian Applicants Make
Most delays and refusals on Irish short-stay files come from rules that are written clearly on the official pages but easy to overlook. Check your file against this list before your VFS appointment.
- Missing the 30-day window. Your documents must reach VFS within 30 days of completing AVATS. If you complete the form too early and cannot get an appointment, you may need to start again.
- Uncertified internet bank statements. A statement downloaded from net banking is accepted only if your bank officially certifies it. Ask your branch for a stamped and signed copy covering 6 months.
- Leaving out old passports. Irish immigration asks for a copy of every page of all previous passports, and says the application will be delayed without them.
- Letters that do not meet the rules. Employer and business letters need headed paper, a full address, a landline number and a handwritten signature.
- Not declaring a past refusal. A refusal for any country, including a UK or Schengen refusal, must be declared with the original letter.
- Dates that do not match. The proposed dates on AVATS, your holiday plan, accommodation bookings, leave letter and flight reservation should all agree.
- Applying for the wrong category. If you are staying with relatives, use the visit (family or friend) category and include their invitation letter, not a tourist application with hotel bookings you will not use.
- Forgetting the Schengen gap. If your trip includes a Schengen country, you need a separate Schengen visa as well, and Ireland expects you to mention that route in a letter.
Fixing these before you submit costs far less time than a new application after a refusal, especially as each new application needs a new fee and another wait of about 8 weeks.
At the Irish Border
A visa does not guarantee entry. An immigration officer at the airport or seaport decides whether to let you in and for how long, and puts a landing stamp in your passport. Carry copies of your key documents, your return travel details and your insurance. Ireland does not use exit stamps.
You must leave before the date on your landing stamp. Extensions of a short-stay visit are possible only in exceptional circumstances, so plan your trip within the time you asked for.

Book your visa reservationFrequently Asked Questions
How do I apply for an Ireland visa from India?
Complete the AVATS online form on the official Irish immigration site, then print, sign and date the summary page. Pay the fee and submit the summary page, your passport, photos and original supporting documents at a VFS Global centre in India within 30 days of finishing the online form. Biometrics may also be taken.
How much is the Ireland visa fee for Indians?
The standard Irish short-stay visa fee is €60 for a single-entry visa and €100 for a multiple-entry visa, while a transit visa costs €25. In India you pay through VFS Global, which also charges its own service fee. The visa fee is not returned if your application is withdrawn or refused.
How long does an Ireland visa take from India?
Irish immigration says decisions usually take about 8 weeks from the date the visa office receives your application, and some take longer. You can apply up to 3 months before you travel, so apply early. Irish immigration advises waiting for approval before you buy any travel tickets for the trip.
Can I visit Ireland with a UK visa from India?
Possibly. Under the British Irish Visa Scheme, Indians living in India can get a UK or Irish visa endorsed BIVS that covers both countries. Under the visa waiver programme, a UK visitor visa holder can visit Ireland after first entering the UK, within the time left on their UK permission.
Does a Schengen visa work for Ireland?
No. Ireland is not part of the Schengen area, so a Schengen visa from France, Germany, Italy or any other Schengen country does not let you enter Ireland. You need an Irish visa, or a qualifying UK visa used under BIVS or the waiver programme. An Irish visa also does not allow Schengen travel.
Do I need a flight ticket for an Ireland visa?
No paid ticket is needed. Irish immigration advises waiting for approval before buying travel tickets, but your holiday plan should show your travel dates. A BookForVisa reservation has a real PNR, costs $15 per person, stays valid 48-72 hours and allows free date changes on the booking day only, with matching dates.
Can I appeal an Ireland visa refusal?
No. Ireland has no appeal process for short-stay visa refusals. Your refusal letter lists the reasons, and you can make a new application that fixes each one, with a new fee. Declare the earlier refusal and include its letter, because Irish immigration refuses applications that do not disclose previous refusals.
Friendly reminder: BookForVisa prepares flight and hotel reservations to support visa applications and onward-travel proof. Requirements vary by destination, consulate, visa category and applicant situation. A reservation supports your file; it is not a paid ticket for travel and does not guarantee visa approval or entry.
