How to Apply for a Schengen Visa From Nigeria

How to Apply for a Schengen Visa From Nigeria

Short answer: To apply for a Schengen visa from Nigeria, first pick the country of your main destination, then book the centre that handles it: TLScontact for France, Italy, Belgium and the Netherlands, the German Consulate General in Lagos for Germany, or BLS or VFS where those partners are named. Adults pay €90. A flight reservation for visa costs $15 per person.

Nigerian passport holders need a Schengen short-stay visa to visit any of the 29 Schengen countries for tourism, family visits, business or short events of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. The visa is the same across Schengen, but in Nigeria the place you apply depends on which country is your main destination. France and Italy use TLScontact. Germany takes applications at its Consulate General in Lagos, with no visa centre. The Netherlands routes you by state of residence to either the Belgian TLS centre in Abuja or the French TLS centre in Lagos. Spain uses BLS International, and several other countries use VFS Global.

This guide is written for applicants living in Nigeria. It is different from our Schengen short-stay guide for India, because the centres, partners and local rules are not the same. It covers how to choose the right country, which centre serves which destination, the German Consulate's Naira fee and anti-forgery rules, the Dutch state list, fees, waiting times, documents and flight reservations. The United Kingdom is not in Schengen; for that route see our UK visa from Nigeria guide.

Facts come from the European Commission's Schengen pages, NetherlandsWorldwide, the German missions in Nigeria, the Italian Embassy in Abuja and TLScontact's France Nigeria site unless another source is named. Confirm on those sites on the day you apply, because partners and addresses change.

Do You Need a Schengen Visa From Nigeria?

Yes. Nigerian passport holders need a Schengen short-stay visa for tourism, family visits, business meetings, short courses and other short stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. The European Commission lists the 29 Schengen countries without internal border controls: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

One short-stay visa covers travel across that area. The United Kingdom and Ireland are not in Schengen, so a Schengen visa does not let you enter them, and a UK visa does not let you enter France or Germany.

Pick the country of your main destination

Apply to the country where you will spend the most days, or where the main purpose of your trip is. If you spend equal time in several countries, apply to the one you enter first. Applying to a convenient centre for a trip that is mainly somewhere else is a common reason for refusal. Your flight and hotel plan should show the same main destination as the centre you book.

Where Nigerians Apply: TLS, BLS, VFS or the Consulate

Nigeria does not use one partner for every Schengen country. The table below summarises the routes confirmed on official pages. Always open the destination country's own Nigeria page before you book, because representation agreements change.

Main destination Where Nigerians apply (official)
France TLScontact Visa Application Centres in Lagos (Victoria Island) and Abuja.
Italy TLScontact centres in Lagos and Abuja; the Consulate General of Italy in Lagos decides.
Belgium (and countries it represents) TLScontact Belgian application centres in Abuja and Lagos.
Netherlands Belgian TLS in Abuja if you live in the FCT or a listed northern or central state; French TLS in Lagos if you live in any other Nigerian state.
Germany Consulate General of Germany in Lagos for most applicants; Embassy in Abuja only in the cases its page lists. No visa centre.
Spain BLS International, the official partner of the Embassy of Spain in Nigeria.
Other Schengen countries Check that country's Nigeria page; several use VFS Global in Lagos or Abuja.

France: TLScontact Lagos and Abuja

Fill in the form on France-Visas first, then book TLScontact. The official TLS France Nigeria page lists:

  • 1st floor, 39 Adeola Odeku Street, next to Hubmart stores, Victoria Island, Lagos Get directions
  • Ground floor, Murkhtar El-Yakub Place beside Metro Plaza, on Plot 1129 Zakariya Maimalari Street, Central Business District, Abuja, Nigeria Get directions

TLS also notes that short-stay applications for the Netherlands, Lithuania and Monaco are taken at the Lagos centre only, which matches the Dutch government's rule that residents of non-listed states apply through the French centre in Lagos.

Italy: TLScontact, decided in Lagos

The Italian Embassy in Abuja says visa applications for Nigeria are handled by the Consulate General of Italy in Lagos, and must be submitted through TLScontact in Abuja or Lagos. Book on the TLS Italy Nigeria site after registering. Beninese nationals applying for Italy are handled by the French Embassy in Cotonou under a representation agreement, not by the Italian missions in Nigeria.

Netherlands From Nigeria: The State List

NetherlandsWorldwide's apply in Nigeria page is one of the clearest origin-specific rules. Where you apply depends on where you live:

Belgian TLS in Abuja

If you live in one of these states or the FCT, apply at the Belgian application centre of TLScontact in Abuja: Adamawa, Bauchi, Benue, Borno, FCT Abuja, Gombe, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Kogi, Nasarawa, Niger, Plateau, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe and Zamfara. Questions, status updates, complaints and objections go to that Belgian TLS centre.

French TLS in Lagos

If you live in any other Nigerian state, apply at the French application centre of TLScontact in Lagos. Questions and objections for those applications go to the French TLS centre in Lagos.

Visa facilitation to live with a Dutch child under 18 cannot be done in Nigeria. NetherlandsWorldwide says you must apply at a Dutch embassy, consulate-general, VFS Global or TLScontact in another country.

If you do not live in Nigeria

Apply in the country where you live. If you have not been back to that country for 6 months, or you did not know you would need to travel when you left, NetherlandsWorldwide explains when you may apply elsewhere.

Germany From Nigeria: Consulate General in Lagos

Germany does not outsource Schengen applications in Nigeria to a visa centre. The German missions' Schengen visa page says the Consulate General in Lagos is responsible as a rule, and the Embassy in Abuja takes applications only in certain cases listed on its site.

Address

The Consulate General of Germany in Lagos is at 15, Walter Carrington Crescent, Victoria Island, Lagos Get directions. Its consular jurisdiction for residents covers Abia, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, Ekiti, Enugu, Imo, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Oyo and Rivers, and it also handles visa applications for all of Nigeria. Opening hours are Monday to Friday, 07:00 to 14:30, except public holidays.

Appointments

You can apply only with a free appointment booked in advance through the Consulate's own online system. The Consulate says it does not cooperate with agencies or third parties that sell appointment bookings. Book a separate appointment for each applicant. Apply at least 15 calendar days before travel and no more than 6 months ahead. Special appointment requests cannot be accommodated.

At the interview

Every applicant must appear in person, hand in original documents with one set of photocopies, give fingerprints and answer questions. Documents sent in advance are not considered. Incomplete applications cannot be processed. Late arrivals are not seen and must book a new appointment. Waiting time on the day is possible.

Fee in naira

The fee is €90, with a few exceptions. It is payable at the mission's current exchange rate in Nigerian naira, in cash or by POS. The processing fee is not returned if the visa is refused.

Forged documents

The Consulate warns that an application with forged documents or false information is refused at once, the applicant is entered in a warning database that harms later applications, and a Schengen-wide entry ban can follow.

Minors

As a rule both parents must attend a minor's appointment. If one parent cannot attend for justified reasons, a declaration of consent with a signature certified at a German mission, a German authority or a German notary is required, plus a copy of the absent parent's passport. Copies of the consent are not accepted; use the Consulate's template. Certification appointments in Abuja and Lagos are booked separately.

Decision and appeal

Processing is generally up to 15 calendar days and can be longer in individual cases. If the visa is granted, check every detail on the sticker at once. If it is refused, the letter gives the grounds and explains the right to appeal by filing an action with the Administrative Court in Berlin within one month, which incurs cost. You can also reapply with complete documents and a new appointment. The Consulate does not return forms, photos or documents if an application is refused or withdrawn.

Fees and Timing

The European Commission sets the standard Schengen visa fee at €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6 to 12. Children under 6 are usually free. Each centre also charges its own service fee in naira, shown on TLS, BLS or VFS when you book.

Apply at least 15 calendar days before travel and no more than 6 months ahead. Decisions usually take up to 15 calendar days once the mission has a complete file. Consultation with other Schengen states, interviews or requests for more documents can make the wait longer. Book early for summer and year-end travel, when TLS and Consulate slots fill quickly.

Step Typical timing
Choose main destination and centre As soon as your itinerary is fixed
Complete the online form (France-Visas, Dutch form or national form) Before booking the appointment
Book TLS, BLS, VFS or Consulate appointment As early as slots allow within the 6-month window
Attend and pay Appointment day
Mission decision Usually up to 15 calendar days after the file arrives

Documents Most Centres Ask For

Each destination publishes its own Nigeria checklist. The common core across Schengen applications is:

  • A passport valid at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from Schengen, issued within the last 10 years, with blank visa pages.
  • A completed and signed Schengen application form.
  • A recent passport photo meeting the destination's rules.
  • Travel medical insurance of at least €30,000 covering the whole Schengen area for your stay.
  • Proof of the purpose of the trip: hotel bookings, an invitation letter, a business letter or a conference registration.
  • Proof of funds: bank statements and, where asked, salary slips, company documents or a host's formal obligation.
  • Proof of ties to Nigeria: employment letter, CAC business papers, school letter or family documents.
  • A travel plan that matches your form and the country whose centre you booked.

Germany's Consulate in Lagos asks for originals plus one photocopy set at the interview. France-Visas and TLS list their own document order. Always download the checklist for your exact destination and purpose, not a generic list from a blog.

Flight and hotel proof

Most checklists ask for a flight reservation and hotel bookings that match your dates. You do not need to buy a full paid ticket before the decision. A reservation with a real PNR shows the route the main-destination rule requires.

Documents by Applicant Type in Nigeria

Beyond the common core, Nigerian missions look for proof that you will leave the Schengen area. The exact papers depend on your work, but these patterns appear across official checklists:

Your situation Evidence that usually helps
Employee Employment letter on company letterhead stating your role, salary and approved leave dates; recent salary slips; bank statements showing salary credits.
Business owner Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) registration papers, tax filings and business account statements that show ongoing activity in Nigeria.
Student Admission or enrolment letter from your school or university, and proof of who pays for the trip.
Visiting family or friends Invitation letter from the host with their address and status in the Schengen country, plus proof of your relationship.
Business visitor Invitation from the European company with a meeting schedule, plus a letter from your Nigerian employer confirming the trip.

Germany's Consulate stresses originals plus one photocopy set at the interview. TLS centres for France and Italy publish their own document order on their sites. Bring more than the minimum if a statement shows large unexplained deposits, and add a short written explanation for those movements.

Insurance must cover at least €30,000 for medical costs and repatriation across the whole Schengen area for your entire stay. Buy it for the dates on your form, and keep the policy certificate with your file and with the documents you carry when you travel.

Flight Reservations for a Schengen Visa From Nigeria

Because your main destination decides which centre you book, the flights in your file should land you in that country first, or spend the most nights there. A BookForVisa reservation helps you show that plan without paying for a ticket before approval.

  • BookForVisa reservations cost a flat $15 per person and include a real PNR that can be checked.
  • Each reservation is valid for 48-72 hours, so time it close to your appointment.
  • Date changes are free on the booking day only.
  • It can be issued even while you are at the visa centre.
  • It works for visa applications and for onward-travel proof.

If you use another provider, a dummy ticket should still be verifiable and match the dates on your form, insurance and hotel bookings. Do not invent a France-heavy itinerary for a Germany Consulate appointment, or the other way round.

Lagos or Abuja: How to Choose the City

Most Schengen partners in Nigeria operate in Lagos, Abuja, or both. Which city you use is not always a free choice.

  • Germany: Lagos Consulate General for almost everyone; Abuja Embassy only in the limited cases its page lists.
  • Netherlands: decided by your state of residence on the NetherlandsWorldwide list, not by which city is closer.
  • France and Italy: TLS centres in both Lagos (Victoria Island) and Abuja; check which centre has appointments and which mission decides your file.
  • Spain: BLS is centred on Lagos for most applicants; confirm any Abuja option on the official BLS or Embassy page.

Travel time between Lagos and Abuja is a full day by road or a short flight, so book the correct city the first time. If you live in Port Harcourt, Kano or Enugu, check whether your destination allows a TLS or VFS appointment in the nearer capital before you plan overnight travel.

On appointment day, arrive early. Germany will not see late applicants. TLS and BLS centres also run on booked slots, and peak mornings fill the waiting areas. Bring naira cash or a card that works for POS where the mission or partner requires it, plus every original and photocopy on the checklist.

Representation agreements

Some smaller Schengen countries do not run their own visa section in Nigeria. They ask another country's mission or a shared TLS or VFS counter to take applications on their behalf. That is why a Netherlands application can land at a Belgian or French TLS desk. Always read the destination country's own Nigeria page rather than assuming the partner that handled your last trip still covers this one.

Common Mistakes Nigerian Applicants Make

  • Wrong centre for the trip. Booking TLS France for a holiday spent mostly in Spain or Germany is a classic refusal reason.
  • Ignoring the Dutch state list. Residents of listed northern and central states must use Belgian TLS in Abuja for the Netherlands, not Lagos.
  • Paying an agent for a German appointment. The Consulate's booking system is free and does not work with third parties.
  • Incomplete German files. The Consulate will not process incomplete applications and does not accept documents sent ahead of the interview.
  • Forged or altered papers. Germany warns of an immediate refusal, a warning database entry and a possible Schengen-wide entry ban.
  • Confusing the UK with Schengen. A UK visa from Nigeria does not cover France, Italy or Germany.
  • Dates that do not match. Keep the form, flight reservation, hotels and invitation on the same dates.

If Your Schengen Visa Is Refused

A refusal letter explains the reasons and your options. For German refusals, you may appeal to the Administrative Court in Berlin within one month, at your own cost, or reapply with stronger documents and a new appointment. For applications lodged through TLS for France, Belgium or the Netherlands, NetherlandsWorldwide and France-Visas explain how to object through the centre that took the file.

Before reapplying, fix the reasons in the letter: a clearer main destination, stronger ties to Nigeria, stamped bank statements covering the trip, and an itinerary that matches the centre you book.

Spain and Other Partners in Nigeria

Spain uses BLS International as the official partner of the Embassy of Spain in Nigeria. Open the BLS Spain Nigeria site for the current Lagos centre address, fees and appointment calendar before you travel there. Northern residents are sometimes directed to the Embassy in Abuja for specific cases; the Embassy or BLS page will say when that applies.

Several other Schengen countries receive applications through VFS Global in Lagos or Abuja. Because those lists change when representation agreements change, do not rely on a third-party summary. Open the destination country's official apply-in-Nigeria page and follow the partner it names that day.

How to confirm the right partner

  1. Write down your main destination and the nights you will spend in each Schengen country.
  2. Search that country's foreign ministry or embassy site for Nigeria and Schengen or short stay.
  3. Note whether it names TLScontact, BLS International, VFS Global or the mission itself.
  4. Check whether your state of residence changes the centre, as it does for the Netherlands.
  5. Book only on the official partner domain or the mission's own booking system.

What Happens After You Apply

After you submit, the partner gives you a reference number for tracking. The mission, not TLS, BLS or VFS, decides. When the passport is ready you collect it at the centre or receive it by courier, depending on what you paid for.

Check the visa sticker at once: your name, passport number, validity dates, number of entries and number of days. The validity window is the period in which you may travel; the number of days is the maximum stay inside that window. If anything is wrong, contact the mission that issued it before you travel.

A Schengen visa does not guarantee entry. Border officers can still ask for proof of funds, insurance, accommodation and return travel. Carry copies of the key documents from your application.

German refusals in more detail

Germany's refusal letter explains the grounds and the right to bring an action in the Administrative Court in Berlin within one month. That court process costs money. Many applicants instead prepare a stronger new file, book a new free appointment and declare the earlier refusal. The Consulate keeps forms, photos and documents when an application is refused or withdrawn, so keep your own copies from the start.

Data protection

Germany says information about an individual visa application may be given only to the applicant or to a person the applicant has authorised in writing. If someone else will collect your passport or ask about the file, prepare that written authorisation before the appointment day.

Planning Timeline for Nigerian Applicants

A practical plan for a trip in July, when European summer slots are scarce, looks like this:

When What to do
4 to 5 months before Fix your itinerary and main destination; check passport validity and blank pages.
3 to 4 months before Open the destination's Nigeria page; note TLS, BLS, VFS or Consulate rules and any state list.
10 to 12 weeks before Gather bank statements, employment or CAC papers, and invitation letters; buy insurance of at least €30,000.
8 to 10 weeks before Complete the online form and book the appointment as soon as slots open inside the 6-month window.
Appointment week Get a flight reservation matching your main destination and hotel confirmations; print originals and photocopies.
After submission Allow about 15 calendar days plus courier time; check the visa sticker before buying a full ticket.

If you need a German appointment, remember the Consulate does not take special date requests and late arrivals lose their slot. If you need a Dutch appointment, check the state list again before you pay for travel to Lagos or Abuja.

Keep digital and paper copies of every document you submit. Partners and missions rarely return supporting papers, and a refusal or a request for more evidence is easier to answer when you can resend the same file quickly. Update bank statements if more than a few weeks pass between printing them and the appointment day.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I apply for a Schengen visa from Nigeria?

Choose the Schengen country of your main destination, complete its online form if required, then book the centre that serves that country in Nigeria. France and Italy use TLScontact, Germany uses the Consulate General in Lagos, the Netherlands routes you by state to Belgian TLS in Abuja or French TLS in Lagos, and Spain uses BLS International.

How much is the Schengen visa fee in Nigeria?

The EU fee is €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6 to 12. Germany collects it in Nigerian naira at the mission's exchange rate, in cash or by POS. TLS, BLS and VFS each add their own service charge in naira. The visa fee is not returned if the application is refused.

Where do I apply for a Netherlands visa in Nigeria?

If you live in the FCT or a listed northern or central state, apply at the Belgian TLScontact centre in Abuja. If you live in any other Nigerian state, apply at the French TLScontact centre in Lagos. Questions and objections go to the centre that took your file, according to NetherlandsWorldwide.

Does Germany use VFS in Nigeria?

No. Schengen applications for Germany are lodged at the Consulate General in Lagos, or in limited cases at the Embassy in Abuja. Appointments are free on the Consulate's own system, and the Consulate says it does not work with agencies that sell bookings. Every applicant must attend in person with originals and photocopies.

How long does a Schengen visa take from Nigeria?

Apply at least 15 calendar days and no more than 6 months before travel. Germany says processing is generally up to 15 calendar days and can be longer in individual cases. Other missions follow the same Schengen timing once they receive a complete file, so book early in peak summer and year-end seasons.

Do I need a flight ticket for a Schengen visa from Nigeria?

No paid ticket is required before the decision. Your file must show a travel plan that matches the country whose centre you booked. A BookForVisa reservation has a real PNR, costs $15 per person, stays valid 48-72 hours and allows free date changes on the booking day only, so dates can match your form.

Is a UK visa the same as a Schengen visa from Nigeria?

No. The United Kingdom is not in the Schengen area. A UK visitor visa does not let you enter France, Italy, Germany or any other Schengen country, and a Schengen visa does not let you enter the UK. Apply for each route separately if your trip includes both destinations.

Friendly reminder: BookForVisa prepares flight and hotel reservations to support visa applications and onward-travel proof. Requirements vary by destination, consulate, visa category and applicant situation. A reservation supports your file; it is not a paid ticket for travel and does not guarantee visa approval or entry.
