Short answer: To apply for a Japan visa from Nigeria, book an online appointment at the Japan Visa Application Centre run by VFS Global in Abuja or Lagos, then submit your passport, signed form, photo and documents in person. Processing takes at least 12 working days in Abuja and 14 in Lagos. A flight reservation for visa costs $15 per person.
Nigerian passport holders need a visa for every trip to Japan, whatever the purpose or length of stay. Since 3 March 2025 almost all applications and passport collections in Nigeria go through the two Japan Visa Application Centres (JVACs) in Abuja and Lagos, operated by VFS Global under a contract with the Embassy of Japan. The Embassy itself now takes direct applications only for urgent humanitarian cases, diplomatic and official business, and people invited by the Government of Japan.
This guide is written for people applying in Nigeria. It is different from our Japan visa from India guide, because the Nigerian route has its own centres, naira fees, a Lagos courier charge, longer processing in Lagos, a personal-appearance rule with no proxies, and a NAPTIP clearance rule for some minors. It covers who must apply, where, fees, documents, photos, minors, timing, scams, after the decision, mistakes and a planning checklist.
Facts come from the Embassy of Japan in Nigeria (its Visa Information page, the JVAC opening announcement of 27 February 2025, its minors page and its scam warning) and the VFS Global Japan Nigeria information page. Key sources: the Embassy of Japan in Nigeria, its visa information page and visa fee notice (PDF), and the VFS Global Japan visa fee update, Lagos centre page, temporary visitor requirements and tourism document guidance (PDF). Confirm details there on the day you apply.

Do Nigerians Need a Visa for Japan?
Yes. The Embassy of Japan in Nigeria states that Nigerian nationals must obtain a visa regardless of the purpose or duration of the trip. Nigeria is not on Japan's list of visa-exempt countries, and there is no visa on arrival. Holders of diplomatic or official passports follow separate rules and should contact the Embassy first.
For a holiday, a visit to friends or relatives, a conference or short business meetings, you apply for a temporary visitor (short-term stay) visa. VFS describes the tourist and short-term business categories as allowing a stay of up to 90 days, depending on your itinerary. Japan decides the actual period of stay; a request for 90 days on a five-day trip does not help your file.
Longer stays for work, study or joining a spouse need a Certificate of Eligibility issued in Japan before you apply for the visa. Those are outside this guide, which focuses on short visits.
Applying from Nigeria as a foreign resident
If you are not Nigerian but live in Nigeria, the Embassy's earlier document guidance asked third-country applicants for a valid CERPAC card or residence permit at submission. Check the current JVAC checklist for your nationality, because fees and documents can differ by nationality.
Where Nigerians Apply: JVAC Abuja and Lagos
From 3 March 2025, with few exceptions, applications and passport collections are processed only at the two Japan Visa Application Centres. The Embassy's announcement lists:
- Abuja: 3rd Floor Sterling Bank Plaza, Plot 1083 Mohammedu Buhari Way, Central Business District, Abuja Get directions
- Lagos: First Floor, The Manor, Plot 110, Admiral Way, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos Get directions
Business hours are 08:00 to 17:00. Applications are taken 08:00 to 15:00 by online booking only. Passport collection runs 08:00 to 15:00 and needs no appointment. The centres close on Saturdays, Sundays, Nigerian public holidays and Embassy holidays. The shared contact line is +234 (0)8150188800 and the email is Info.JapanNigeria@vfshelpline.com.
You can choose either city. The Embassy notes that files lodged in Lagos are carried to Abuja and back by courier, which is why Lagos applicants pay an extra courier charge and wait two more working days.
When the Embassy takes your file directly
The Embassy accepts direct applications only for urgent humanitarian cases, diplomatic and official business by governments or international organisations, and people invited by the Government of Japan or an international organisation based in Japan. In those cases you first email the Consular Section at visanigeria@la.mofa.go.jp with names, organisation, contact details, travel period, purpose and three preferred submission times between 08:30 and 11:30.
If you work for a government or international body but travel in a personal capacity, such as a self-funded conference, you still use a JVAC. Members of the diplomatic corps stationed in Nigeria contact the Embassy first.

Personal Appearance and No Proxies
The Embassy states that visa applications must be made by the applicant personally and that applications through a proxy are not permitted in principle. Its announcement also says applicants are expected to visit the centre in Abuja or Lagos in person. Plan to travel to your chosen centre on the appointment day with your original documents.
The Embassy also warns that the only authorised visa agency affiliated with it is the JVAC run by VFS Global. Anyone else offering to lodge your file, guarantee approval or sell a slot is not part of the official process.
How Much Does a Japan Visa Cost in Nigeria?
Japan's visa fee in Nigeria rose sharply in 2026. The Embassy of Japan in Nigeria and VFS Global publish two rate periods, and the fee is set by the date the Embassy receives your application, not the date you book.
| Charge | Amount (NGN) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Single-entry visa fee | 156,300 | Applications reaching the Embassy 1 July 2026 to 31 March 2027 |
| Double or multiple-entry visa fee | 312,500 | Same period; only if Japan grants that visa type |
| VFS service fee | 16,500 | Per application |
| Mandatory courier, Lagos to Abuja | 52,465 | Per application, Lagos only |
Because files take time to reach the Embassy, VFS applies the new rate to submissions made at the centres from 29 June 2026. The earlier rates of NGN 31,300 single and NGN 62,500 double or multiple applied only to applications received from 1 April to 30 June 2026; they no longer apply. Older blog posts that still quote them are out of date.
The VFS Lagos page also lists an optional courier service (NGN 27,984 including VAT) for returning documents. That is a different, optional charge and is not the mandatory Lagos-to-Abuja courier fee.
The Embassy says that if the visa is not granted, the visa fee is returned to you; the VFS service charge is not. A Lagos budget for one single-entry tourist file is therefore NGN 156,300 plus NGN 16,500 plus NGN 52,465, or NGN 225,265, before photos, printing and travel to the centre. In Abuja the courier fee does not apply, giving NGN 172,800. Check the VFS fee page on the day you apply.
Single Entry or Multiple Entry
Most first-time Nigerian visitors receive a single-entry visa, which allows one entry into Japan within its validity. The double or multiple-entry fee of NGN 312,500 applies only when Japan actually grants a multiple-entry visa, which depends on the applicant's profile and purpose and is decided by the Embassy, not by the applicant's choice at the counter.
If you travel to Japan often for business, explain the pattern in your employer or invitation letter and show your earlier Japanese visas and travel history. Otherwise, apply for the trip you are actually planning. A clear single trip with matching documents is the strongest file for a first application.
Documents for a Japan Tourist Visa From Nigeria
The JVAC checklist for your purpose is the final word. The core items for a short-term visit are:
- Your valid passport.
- One visa application form, completed and signed in person. VFS guidance says the original form must be submitted, not a photocopy, and the signature must match the one in your passport.
- One photo glued (not stapled) to the form, meeting the size rules below.
- A flight reservation showing your travel to and from Japan.
- A day-by-day schedule of stay that names where you sleep each night.
- Proof that you can pay for the trip, such as recent bank statements.
- Purpose documents: hotel bookings for tourism; an invitation and the inviter's details for family or friend visits; a business or invitation letter for short business.
The Embassy's earlier written guidance on visa documents added useful habits that still fit the JVAC process: do not staple documents, submit originals unless a photocopy is allowed, and use papers issued within the last three months. It also noted that the Embassy did not require applicants to buy flight tickets; a reservation slip was enough.
Photo rules
- 45 mm long by 35 mm wide.
- White background.
- Glued, not stapled, to the top right of the application form.
- Check the VFS temporary visitor page for any further specifications before you print.
Proving Funds and Ties to Nigeria
Japan wants to see that you can pay for the trip and that you will leave Japan when planned. For most Nigerian applicants that means bank statements in your own name that show steady activity, plus evidence of what keeps you in Nigeria.
| Your situation | Evidence that usually helps |
|---|---|
| Employee | Letter from your employer on letterhead with your role, salary and approved leave dates; recent salary credits on your statement. |
| Business owner | Corporate Affairs Commission registration, tax documents and business account statements showing ongoing trade. |
| Student | Letter from your school or university and proof of who funds the trip. |
| Sponsored by family in Nigeria | Sponsor's statements, a sponsorship letter and proof of the relationship. |
| Invited by someone in Japan | Invitation letter, the inviter's details and, if they pay, their guarantee and financial papers as the checklist requires. |
Large deposits made just before the application invite questions. If you have one, add a short written explanation with the source document. Keep amounts and dates consistent with your schedule of stay.
Visiting Friends, Relatives or a Business Partner in Japan
If someone in Japan invites you, the checklist for visiting relatives or acquaintances, or for short business, asks for documents from that person as well as from you. Typical items include an invitation letter that explains the purpose, a schedule of stay, and, where the inviter acts as guarantor, a letter of guarantee and proof of the guarantor's income and residence in Japan.
For short business, the VFS category covers meetings, conferences, business negotiation, after-sales service, marketing, and cultural or sports exchange. VFS notes that it does not, in principle, cover activities paid for by the Japanese side as work in Japan. Bring a letter from your Nigerian employer confirming the trip and who pays.
Make sure the inviter's letter, your form and your flight reservation all show the same arrival and departure dates. Mismatched dates are a common reason for extra questions.
Travelling With Children: NAPTIP Clearance
The Embassy's page for minor applicants is one of the clearest Nigeria-only rules. If a minor travels without parents, the file needs, in addition to the normal documents:
- A letter of consent signed by a parent.
- Proof of the relationship, such as a birth certificate.
- A photocopy of the parent's valid, signed government ID, such as a driver's licence or NIN slip. Company or organisation IDs are not accepted.
For a minor travelling without parents on a sports or school trip of up to 90 days, and for a minor student athlete on a long-term stay, the Embassy also requires a clearance certificate from the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP). Apply for that through NAPTIP's e-clearance process well before the JVAC appointment, because the visa file cannot be completed without it.
How Long Does a Japan Visa Take From Nigeria?
The Embassy gives a minimum processing time, from submission to passport collection at the JVAC, of 12 working days in Abuja and 14 working days in Lagos, if there are no problems with the file. Weekends, Nigerian public holidays and Embassy holidays do not count.
It can take longer when many people apply, when you are asked for more documents, or when the Embassy sends the file to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tokyo for further review. In that case it may take more than a month.
You can book a JVAC appointment up to three months in advance, according to the Embassy. The Embassy strongly recommends allowing enough time, so book once your dates are fixed rather than a fortnight before departure.
| Step | Abuja | Lagos |
|---|---|---|
| Book online appointment | Up to 3 months ahead | Up to 3 months ahead |
| Submit in person | 08:00 to 15:00 on working days | 08:00 to 15:00 on working days |
| Minimum processing to collection | 12 working days | 14 working days (courier to Abuja and back) |
| If referred to Tokyo | More than a month possible | More than a month possible |
Flight Reservations for a Japan Visa From Nigeria
Your form asks for your arrival date, port of entry and planned departure, and the schedule of stay lists every night. A flight reservation that matches those dates is the usual travel proof. The Embassy's own earlier guidance said it did not require purchase of flight tickets, so there is no need to pay a full fare before the decision.
- BookForVisa reservations cost a flat $15 per person and include a real PNR that can be checked.
- Each reservation is valid for 48-72 hours, so time it close to your JVAC appointment.
- Date changes are free on the booking day only.
- It can be issued even while you are at the visa centre.
- It works for visa applications and for onward-travel proof.
If you use another provider, a dummy ticket should still be a verifiable reservation that matches your form and schedule, never an edited image. Our note on flight reservations for a visa to Tokyo explains what a reservation shows, and our hotel reservation for visa from Nigeria guide covers the hotel side.
Writing a Schedule of Stay That Works
A schedule of stay is a simple day-by-day table. Each row has the date, the city or area, what you plan to do and where you will sleep, with the hotel name and address or the host's address.
Keep it realistic. Officers check whether your funds cover the hotels you list and whether the route makes sense. A first trip of seven to ten days covering Tokyo, a day trip and Osaka or Kyoto is easier to explain than a two-week loop through six cities.
Make the first and last rows match your flight reservation exactly, including the airport. If your plan changes after you submit, keep the change small and be ready to explain it at the border.

Choosing Between Abuja and Lagos
Both centres accept the same visa types and follow the same Embassy rules, so the choice is mostly about cost, time and travel. Abuja is where the Embassy sits, so files lodged there are not couriered and the minimum processing time is 12 working days. Lagos adds the NGN 52,465 courier charge and two working days, giving a minimum of 14.
For someone living in Lagos, Ogun or the South-West, the Lagos centre usually still makes sense: one road trip across Lagos is cheaper and simpler than two return journeys to Abuja, one to submit and one to collect. For someone in the FCT, Niger, Nasarawa, Kaduna or nearby states, Abuja saves both the courier charge and two working days.
Remember that you must collect the passport from the same centre where you applied, during collection hours. If you travel from another city, plan for two trips and check the centre's closure days so you do not arrive on a public holiday.
Preparing for Your Appointment Day
Arrive a little before your booked time with your appointment confirmation, passport and the full set of documents in the order the checklist gives. Use paper clips rather than staples. Bring photocopies where the checklist asks for them, and keep originals ready to show.
Check that the form is the current version, that every field is complete and that the signature matches the one in your passport. Check that the photo is glued, not stapled, with your name written on the back. Count your pages: missing bank statement pages are a frequent reason for a file to be returned for more documents.
Bring enough money for the visa fee, the VFS service fee and, in Lagos, the courier charge, and confirm the accepted payment methods on the VFS page before the day. Keep your receipt and any reference number, because you will need them to track and collect the passport.
Hotel Bookings and Where You Will Stay
For a tourist visit, your schedule of stay should name a hotel or other place to stay for every night in Japan. Officers compare the hotel nights with your flight dates and your funds, so a hotel booking that covers only half the trip raises a question you could have avoided.
If you are staying with friends or relatives, their invitation letter and address replace the hotel booking for those nights. If you mix the two, for example a few nights with family in Tokyo and a few in a Kyoto hotel, show both clearly in the schedule.
BookForVisa hotel reservations also cost a flat $15 per person, with the same 48-72 hour validity and free date changes on the booking day only. Match the city and dates to the schedule of stay so every document points to the same trip.
Scams and Fake Agents
The Embassy has published warnings about fraudulent websites, social media pages and emails that pretend to be the Embassy or the Government of Japan to collect payments from applicants. It says these are not connected with the Government of Japan.
Use only the official VFS Global Japan Nigeria site to book, pay the fees listed there at the centre, and remember that the JVAC is the only visa agency the Embassy has authorised. No one can sell a guaranteed approval or a faster decision.
After You Submit: Collection and Checking the Visa
At the JVAC you hand in your passport, form, photo and documents and pay the visa fee, the service fee and, in Lagos, the courier charge. Keep the receipt. Passport collection runs 08:00 to 15:00 on working days without an appointment.
When you get the passport back, check the visa sticker at once: your name, passport number, type of entry, validity dates and permitted stay. A Japanese visa is valid for a set period for entry, and the stay length is decided at landing. Report any error to the centre before you travel.
A visa does not guarantee entry. Immigration officers in Japan can still ask about your plans, funds and return. Carry copies of your schedule, hotel confirmations and return flight details.
Common Mistakes Nigerian Applicants Make
- Going to the Embassy instead of a JVAC. Ordinary visitors must use VFS in Abuja or Lagos.
- Sending someone else. Proxy applications are not permitted in principle.
- A photocopied or unsigned form. The original form must be signed by hand.
- Wrong photo size. Use 45 mm by 35 mm on white, glued, not stapled.
- Forgetting the Lagos courier charge and extra two days.
- Unaccompanied minors without consent papers or NAPTIP clearance.
- Paying an unofficial agent. The Embassy warns of scam sites and accounts.
- Dates that do not match. Keep the form, schedule, hotels, invitation and flight reservation on the same dates.
Planning Timeline for Nigerian Applicants
A workable plan for a two-week trip looks like this:
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| 10 to 12 weeks before | Fix dates; check passport validity and blank pages; ask any inviter in Japan for their letters. |
| 8 to 10 weeks before | Gather bank statements, employer or CAC papers and, for minors, consent papers and any NAPTIP clearance. |
| 6 to 8 weeks before | Book the JVAC appointment in Abuja or Lagos; take compliant photos; fill in and sign the form. |
| Appointment week | Get a flight reservation and hotel confirmations that match the schedule of stay; print everything without staples. |
| After submission | Allow at least 12 working days (Abuja) or 14 (Lagos); collect the passport and check the sticker before paying for a full fare. |
Build extra time around Nigerian public holidays and Japanese holiday periods, when both the centres and the Embassy close.
How This Guide Differs From Other Japan Guides
Our India Japan guide describes India's VFS network, rupee fees and India's own document list. Those rules do not apply in Nigeria. From Nigeria you use JVAC Abuja or Lagos, pay in naira, add a courier charge in Lagos, appear in person without proxies, and follow the Embassy's NAPTIP rule for some minors. Keep this guide and the JVAC checklist for your purpose side by side when you prepare the file.
Japan Visa Checklist From Nigeria

- Book a JVAC appointment in Abuja or Lagos on the official VFS site.
- Complete the form and sign it by hand; glue a compliant photo.
- Prepare bank statements, employment or business papers and purpose documents.
- For minors, add consent, relationship proof, parent ID and NAPTIP clearance where required.
- Get a flight reservation and hotels that match a day-by-day schedule of stay.
- Attend in person, pay the fees and keep the receipt.
- Collect the passport after at least 12 or 14 working days and check the visa.

Book your visa reservationFrequently Asked Questions
Do Nigerians need a visa to visit Japan?
Yes. The Embassy of Japan in Nigeria says Nigerian nationals need a visa for every trip, whatever the purpose or length of stay. There is no visa on arrival and no exemption for ordinary passports. Tourists, family visitors and short business travellers apply for a temporary visitor visa through a Japan Visa Application Centre.
Where do I apply for a Japan visa in Nigeria?
Apply at the Japan Visa Application Centre run by VFS Global in Abuja, at Sterling Bank Plaza in the Central Business District, or in Lagos, at The Manor on Admiral Way, Lekki Phase 1. Submission is by online appointment only, from 08:00 to 15:00 on working days, and you must attend in person.
How much is the Japan visa fee in Nigeria?
For applications reaching the Embassy from 1 July 2026 to 31 March 2027, the visa fee is NGN 156,300 single entry and NGN 312,500 double or multiple entry. VFS applies this rate from 29 June 2026. Add the NGN 16,500 VFS service fee, and in Lagos the mandatory NGN 52,465 courier fee.
How long does a Japan visa take from Nigeria?
The Embassy gives at least 12 working days in Abuja and 14 working days in Lagos from submission to passport collection, if the file has no problems. Weekends and holidays are not counted. A file referred to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tokyo may take more than a month, so apply early.
Can someone submit my Japan visa application for me?
No, not in principle. The Embassy of Japan in Nigeria says applications must be made by the applicant personally and proxy applications are not permitted. Visit the JVAC in Abuja or Lagos yourself with original documents. The Embassy also warns that VFS Global is its only authorised agency, so avoid paid middlemen.
Do I need a flight ticket for a Japan visa from Nigeria?
No paid ticket is needed before the decision. The Embassy has said a flight reservation slip is enough. Make sure it matches your form and schedule of stay. A BookForVisa reservation costs $15 per person, has a real PNR, stays valid 48-72 hours and allows free date changes on the booking day.
What does a minor need for a Japan visa from Nigeria?
A minor travelling without parents needs a signed parental consent letter, proof of relationship such as a birth certificate and a copy of a parent's government ID. For sports or school trips, and for student athletes on long stays, the Embassy also requires a NAPTIP clearance certificate before the application is lodged.
Friendly reminder: BookForVisa prepares flight and hotel reservations to support visa applications and onward-travel proof. Requirements vary by destination, consulate, visa category and applicant situation. A reservation supports your file; it is not a paid ticket for travel and does not guarantee visa approval or entry.
