How to Apply for a China Visa From Nigeria

How to Apply for a China Visa From Nigeria

Short answer: To apply for a China visa from Nigeria, complete the online form on the China Online Visa Application site, print it, then submit at a China Visa Application Centre in Abuja or Lagos. Tourist L visas require a group of more than five with a Chinese agency invitation. A flight reservation for visa costs $15 per person.

Nigerian passport holders need a Chinese visa for tourism, business, family visits, study and work on the mainland of China. Diplomatic and official passport holders are exempt for stays of up to 30 days. Ordinary passport holders apply through the China Visa Application Centres (CVAC) in Abuja and Lagos after completing the online form.

This guide is written for applicants living in Nigeria. It is different from our China visa from India guide, because Nigeria uses CVAC dual centres, fees in naira under a reduction extended through 31 December 2026, a tourist-group rule of more than five people for the L visa, and Invitation Letter (TE) plus paid itinerary rules for many M and F files. The United Kingdom is a separate route; see our UK visa from Nigeria guide if that is your destination.

Facts come from the Consulate General of China in Lagos Chinese Visa Application Guidelines for Nigerian Citizens and the Embassy's Apply for a Chinese Visa notices, including the fee-reduction extension. Confirm on those sites on the day you apply, because fees, centre hours, fingerprint notices and invitation rules can change without long notice from the Embassy or Consulate.

Do You Need a China Visa From Nigeria?

Yes, for most ordinary Nigerian passport holders travelling to the Chinese mainland. The Consulate guidelines say Nigerian citizens who hold diplomatic or official passports are exempt from visas and may stay up to 30 days. Everyone else chooses a category that matches the purpose of the trip: L for tourism, M for commercial and trade, F for exchanges and non-commercial visits, Q2 or S2 for short family visits, X1 or X2 for study, Z for work, and other letters for journalists, crew and permanent residence.

Hong Kong SAR and Macao SAR have their own entry rules. The Consulate says Hong Kong applications can go through the Immigration Department of Hong Kong or through CVAC with a communication fee, and Macao applications are submitted through CVAC. Check those regional authorities before you treat a mainland visa as enough.

A China visa does not cover the United Kingdom or the Schengen area. Plan those routes separately if your itinerary continues beyond China.

Where Nigerians Apply: CVAC Abuja and Lagos

Regular applicants go to a China Visa Application Centre during working hours with printed materials, pay fees and give fingerprints. The Consulate guidelines list two centres:

  • Churchgate Plaza, First Floor, Plot 473, AO Cadastral Zone, Constitution Avenue, Central Business Area, FCT, Abuja Get directions
  • Second Floor, The Manor, Plot 110, Admiral Ayinla Way, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos Get directions

Shared contact numbers in the guidelines are +234 99047700 and +234 8071191134. Emails are abujacentre@visaforchina.org and lagoscentre@visaforchina.org. The CVAC website named in the guidelines is www.visaforchina.org. Office hours for CVAC submission are 09:00 to 15:00, Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays.

Diplomatic and official visa applications for ordinary passport holders are arranged in advance with the Embassy in Abuja or the Consulate General in Lagos and submitted there on the days those missions publish, not as a walk-in CVAC file.

Embassy and Consulate counters (diplomatic and official)

The Embassy in Abuja lists office hours 08:30 to 11:30 and 14:00 to 17:00 on Tuesday and Thursday (holidays excluded), email abuja@csm.mfa.gov.cn. The Consulate General in Lagos lists 14:30 to 17:00 on Tuesday and Thursday (holidays excluded), email lagos@csm.mfa.gov.cn. Use those channels only for the cases the guidelines describe; tourist and business files go through CVAC.

Online Form on the China Visa Application Site

Every regular applicant must complete the China Online Visa Application form and print it, together with the Confirmation of Online Visa Application. The Consulate guidelines name https://cova.cs.mfa.gov.cn as the form address. You can also start from the Ministry's China Online Visa Application portal.

Fill the form in your own details. Use a phone number and email you control. Upload a clear passport-style photo on a white background, front view, bare head, as the guidelines require. Print the form and confirmation before you go to CVAC; the centre will not create the online file for you at the counter.

Bring the original passport with at least six months of remaining validity and blank visa pages, plus a photocopy of the data page. The Consulate may ask for more materials after review.

Tourist L Visa: Group of More Than Five

This is the clearest Nigeria-specific rule. For the L visa, the Consulate guidelines state that Nigerian citizens are requested to join a tourist group of more than five people, and the group should submit a tourism invitation letter issued by an authorised travel agency in China.

That is different from the India route, where individual L files with itinerary, hotel and flight bookings and a bank-balance rule are common. In Nigeria, a solo tourist L file is not the path the Consulate describes. Work with a licensed Chinese agency that can issue the group invitation, keep the group size above five, and make sure every member's online form matches the same itinerary and invitation.

If your trip is really a business meeting, an exchange visit or a family visit, do not force an L label. Use M, F, Q2 or S2 with the documents those categories require.

Business M and Exchange F: TE Letter and Paid Itinerary

For F (exchanges, visits, inspection tours and other non-commercial activities) and M (commercial and trade), first-time visitors need an Invitation Letter (TE) or Verification Letter of Invitation processed by the inviting individual or entity in China, plus an invitation letter from that host. Non-first-time visitors are exempt from the TE or Verification Letter under the guidelines.

The invitation content must include the invitee's full name, gender, date of birth and passport number; purpose, dates, places, itinerary, relationship and who pays; the inviter's name, contact number, address, seal and signature; and a clear promise that the applicant will abide by Chinese law and leave as planned.

Alongside the invitation, the guidelines ask for a bank statement for the past six months of the applicant or the company, and the applicant's itinerary to China, including paid air tickets and hotel orders. Other materials may be required by the Embassy or Consulate.

Read that paid-itinerary line carefully. For these categories the Consulate asks for paid air tickets and hotel orders, not only a soft reservation. A BookForVisa reservation still helps when you are aligning dates early, building an onward plan, or preparing a category that accepts a reservation; once the Consulate requires paid tickets for your M or F file, buy those tickets to match the invitation dates. Our note on the difference between itinerary, booking and reservation explains the wording.

Fees in Naira Through 31 December 2026

The Chinese Embassy in Nigeria and the Consulate General in Lagos extended the visa-fee reduction policy through 31 December 2026. The Embassy's notice page lists these prices for Nigerian passport holders:

Visa typeFee (Naira)
Single entry10,500
Double entry15,750
Multiple entries, 6 months21,000
Multiple entries, 12 months31,500
Hong Kong SAR / Macao SAR visa fee11,200
Hong Kong / Macao communication fee7,500

Service fees charged by the China Visa Application Centre are excluded from those amounts and are paid separately at CVAC. Nigerian regular passport holders who are issued diplomatic and official visas are exempt from visa fees under the guidelines.

Fees for some other nationalities applying in Nigeria (for example United States, Canada or Romania) appear on the same Embassy notice with different amounts. Always open the notice on the day you pay.

Documents Most Applicants Need

Across categories the Consulate lists these basics:

  • Original passport with at least six months validity and blank visa pages, plus a photocopy of the data page.
  • One Visa Application Form filled online and printed, plus the Confirmation of Online Visa Application.
  • One recently taken colour passport photo on a white background, front view, bare head.
  • Category documents: group tourism invitation for L; TE or Verification Letter plus host invitation, six-month bank statements and paid air and hotel itinerary for many first-time F and M files; kinship proof and host ID for Q2 and S2; admission and related forms for X1 and X2; work-permit notification for Z.
  • Any other material the consular officer asks for.

Holders of D, J1, Q1, S1, X1 and Z visas must, within 30 days of entry, apply for a residence permit at the local public security exit-entry office. Several long-stay categories also ask for a consular-authenticated police character certificate from Nigeria (except minors where noted). Prepare that early if your stay will exceed 180 days.

Bank statements

Where the guidelines ask for six months of statements, bring continuous personal or company statements that show your name and enough activity to fund the trip. Large unexplained deposits invite questions; add a short written explanation and source documents.

Processing Time and Collection

The Consulate guidelines say a regular visa application normally takes 4 working days, subject to the visa officer's decision. Incomplete files, extra checks and peak periods can take longer. Plan your travel dates after that window, not before.

At CVAC you submit materials, pay fees and give fingerprints. Keep the receipt and any pick-up slip. Collect the passport when the centre tells you it is ready, or use the centre's courier option if offered. Check every detail on the visa sticker: name, passport number, entries, validity and duration of stay.

The consular officer has the final decision on issuance, validity, duration of stay and number of entries. A reservation or a paid ticket does not guarantee approval, and the officer may still ask for more bank pages, a clearer invitation seal or a fresh photo before the four-working-day clock finishes.

Flight Reservations for a China Visa From Nigeria

How you prove travel depends on the category. L group files follow the agency itinerary. Many first-time M and F files need paid air tickets and hotel orders. Other short-stay files and onward-travel checks often accept a clear reservation that matches the form.

  • BookForVisa reservations cost a flat $15 per person and include a real PNR that can be checked.
  • Each reservation is valid for 48-72 hours, so time it close to submission.
  • Date changes are free on the booking day only.
  • It can be issued even while you are at CVAC.
  • It works for visa applications and for onward-travel proof when a reservation is accepted.

If you use another provider, a dummy ticket should still be verifiable and match the invitation and hotel dates. Do not submit edited screenshots. When the Consulate requires paid tickets for your category, follow that rule rather than substituting a soft hold, and keep the payment receipt with the invitation letter in the same order the guidelines list.

Common Mistakes Nigerian Applicants Make

  • Applying for L alone. The guidelines ask Nigerian citizens to join a tourist group of more than five with a Chinese agency invitation.
  • Skipping the TE letter on a first M or F trip. First-time visitors need the Invitation Letter (TE) or Verification Letter of Invitation processed in China.
  • Soft holds where paid tickets are required. F and M guidelines ask for an itinerary that includes paid air tickets and hotel orders.
  • Using the India playbook. Delhi and Mumbai rules, rupee fees and the INR bank-balance rule do not apply in Nigeria.
  • Wrong centre. Regular files go to CVAC Abuja or Lagos; diplomatic and official cases use the Embassy or Consulate on booked days.
  • Thin bank history. Six-month statements should show your name and a believable funding pattern.
  • Assuming a mainland visa covers Hong Kong or Macao. Those regions have separate processes and fees.

Hong Kong and Macao Notes

For Hong Kong SAR, the Consulate points applicants to the Immigration Department of Hong Kong SAR website and notes that documents can also be submitted through CVAC, with a communication fee of 7,500 naira per person. It recommends applying online where possible for speed.

For Macao SAR, check the Public Security Police Force site and submit through CVAC; the same communication fee figure appears in the guidelines. Visa fees for Hong Kong or Macao SAR applications by Nigerian citizens are listed as 11,200 naira per person on the Embassy fee notice, separate from the communication fee.

Planning Timeline for Nigerian Applicants

A practical sequence for a business or group tourist trip looks like this:

WhenWhat to do
8 to 10 weeks beforeConfirm category (L group, M, F, Q2 or other); start TE or agency invitation in China if needed.
6 to 8 weeks beforeCheck passport validity and blank pages; gather six-month bank statements.
4 to 6 weeks beforeComplete the online form; align paid tickets or reservations with the invitation dates.
Submission weekPrint form and confirmation; attend CVAC Abuja or Lagos between 09:00 and 15:00 on a working day.
After submissionAllow about four working days plus collection time; check the visa sticker before you travel.

Build buffer for Chinese and Nigerian public holidays. CVAC and the missions close on listed holidays, and invitation letters from China can take time to seal and send.

Family, Study and Work Categories From Nigeria

Short family visits use Q2 when the host is a Chinese citizen or a foreigner with Chinese permanent residence, and S2 when the host is a foreigner working or studying in China. Both need an invitation letter with the invitee details, visit dates, relationship and funding, plus the host's ID or passport and residence documents, and original kinship proof. Kinship certificates issued outside China need consular authentication.

X1 covers study longer than 180 days and X2 covers shorter study. University applicants typically need an admission notice, the Confirmation Form for Study in China (JW201 or JW202), authenticated final academic qualification from the Nigerian Ministry of Education, proof of funds at the level published in the Consulate guidelines or a scholarship certificate, and a physical examination form. Elementary and secondary students use the Confirmation Form for Elementary Stage Students and related papers listed in the guidelines.

Z visas for work require the Notification Letter of Foreigner's Work Permit for stays over 90 days, or the short-term employment papers the guidelines list for stays of 90 days or less, plus invitation or proof letters and six-month income or bank evidence where stated. Holders of X1 and Z must apply for a residence permit within 30 days of entry and should prepare a consular-authenticated police character certificate from Nigeria in advance, except where minors are exempt.

Fingerprints, Photos and What Officers May Still Ask

Regular applicants reserve fingerprints at CVAC when they submit. The Embassy has published separate notices on fingerprint exemptions for certain visa types; read the current notice on the Embassy visa page before you assume you are exempt. Bring the photo that matches the online form: recent, colour, white background, front view, bare head.

Consular officers may ask for extra supporting documents after the first submission. Answer promptly with clear scans and originals when called. The officer decides validity, number of entries and duration of stay based on your full file, not only on the category letter you selected.

Keep copies of everything you hand in. Centres and missions rarely return supporting papers, and a request for more evidence is easier to answer when you can resend the same set quickly.

After You Collect the Visa

Check the sticker under good light before you leave the counter or open the courier envelope. Confirm your name spelling, passport number, number of entries, validity dates and permitted days. If anything is wrong, contact the Embassy or Consulate that issued the visa before you travel.

A Chinese visa does not guarantee entry. Border officers can still ask for proof of funds, accommodation and return travel. Carry copies of the invitation, itinerary and insurance or hotel confirmations that match the sticker dates.

If you hold a long-stay category that requires a residence permit, diary the 30-day deadline from entry and book the local public security appointment early. Do not wait until the last week.

How This Differs From the India China Guide

Our China visa from India guide covers Delhi and Mumbai consular districts, rupee fees paid by demand draft, an INR bank-balance rule for tourists and direct submission at the Embassy or Consulate after online review. None of that replaces the Nigeria process.

From Nigeria you use CVAC Abuja or Lagos, pay in naira under the reduction that runs through 31 December 2026, follow the L group-of-more-than-five rule, and for many first-time F and M files supply a TE letter plus paid air and hotel orders. Linking the India page once is enough for readers who need that origin; do not mix the two checklists in one Nigeria file or the officer will see conflicting districts and fee currency.

Choosing Abuja or Lagos for CVAC

Both CVAC offices take regular mainland visa files. Choose the city you can reach with your passport and originals on a weekday morning. Abuja sits in the Central Business Area at Churchgate Plaza. Lagos is in Lekki Phase 1 at The Manor on Admiral Ayinla Way.

Travel between Lagos and Abuja is a short flight or a long road journey. If your invitation and TE letter are already sealed, do not delay submission waiting for a preferred city. Arrive before the 15:00 cut-off with printed forms, passport and photocopies, because the centre will not complete the online application for you at the desk and late arrivals may need to return another working day.

Diplomatic and official cases remain on the Embassy or Consulate timetable on Tuesday and Thursday. Mixing a tourist file into those counters wastes a trip. Keep CVAC receipts with your passport copy until the sticker is checked.

Money Proof and Invitation Consistency

Where six-month bank statements are required, continuous pages with your name, account number and running balance help more than a single closing-balance letter. Officers look for salary credits or business inflows that match your employment or company story. Large cash deposits just before submission invite a written explanation and source evidence.

Invitation dates, form dates and ticket or reservation dates should tell one story. If the Chinese host moves the meeting week, update the online form reprint and the itinerary before you queue at CVAC. A group L invitation must list more than five travellers whose forms match the same agency letter.

For M and F first-time files, the TE or Verification Letter is processed in China. Build time for that step before you book hotels you cannot easily change. When the guidelines ask for paid air tickets, buy tickets that match the invitation window rather than relying on a soft hold alone.

Public Holidays and Peak Periods for China Visas

CVAC and the Chinese missions close on Chinese and Nigerian public holidays listed in their notices. A four-working-day clock pauses over those closures. Golden Week, Spring Festival and Nigerian festive periods also stretch invitation letters and courier times from China.

If your group L travel or business meeting sits just after a holiday cluster, submit earlier so the sticker is in your passport before you need to buy or confirm remaining tickets. Track Embassy notices on the Apply for a Chinese Visa page for temporary fingerprint rules and fee updates.

Keep a simple folder with the printed online form, confirmation page, invitation or TE letter, bank statements, photo and passport copy. Officers move faster when the stack matches the category order in the Consulate guidelines, and you keep a second set of copies at home for any follow-up request after submission.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I apply for a China visa from Nigeria?

Complete the online form on the China Online Visa Application site, print the form and confirmation, then submit at a China Visa Application Centre in Abuja or Lagos. Regular processing usually takes about four working days. Tourist L visas require a group of more than five people with a Chinese agency invitation letter.

How much is the China visa fee in Nigeria?

Under the fee reduction extended through 31 December 2026, Nigerian passport holders pay 10,500 naira for a single entry, 15,750 for double entry, 21,000 for six-month multiple and 31,500 for twelve-month multiple. China Visa Application Centre service fees are also charged separately on top of those amounts when you submit.

Can I get a China tourist visa alone from Nigeria?

The Consulate guidelines ask Nigerian citizens to join a tourist group of more than five people and to submit a tourism invitation letter from an authorised travel agency in China. Solo L applications are not the route those guidelines describe for Nigeria. Use M, F, Q2 or S2 instead if your purpose is not group tourism.

What documents does a China business visa need from Nigeria?

First-time M applicants need an Invitation Letter (TE) or Verification Letter of Invitation, a host invitation with the required personal and trip details, six months of bank statements, and an itinerary that includes paid air tickets and hotel orders. Non-first-time visitors are exempt from the TE letter under the Consulate guidelines.

Where is the China Visa Application Centre in Nigeria?

CVAC Abuja is at Churchgate Plaza, First Floor, Plot 473, Constitution Avenue, Central Business Area in the FCT. CVAC Lagos is at Second Floor, The Manor, Plot 110, Admiral Ayinla Way, Lekki Phase 1. Regular submission hours at both centres are 09:00 to 15:00, Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays.

How long does a China visa take from Nigeria?

The Consulate guidelines say a regular application normally takes four working days, subject to the visa officer's decision on the file. Incomplete files, requests for more documents, extra checks and public holidays can make the wait longer, so set travel dates after that window rather than before you submit at CVAC.

Do I need a flight ticket for a China visa from Nigeria?

It depends on the category. Many first-time M and F files require paid air tickets and hotel orders in the itinerary. Where a reservation is enough, a BookForVisa reservation has a real PNR, costs $15 per person, stays valid 48-72 hours and allows free date changes on the booking day only.

Friendly reminder: BookForVisa prepares flight and hotel reservations to support visa applications and onward-travel proof. Requirements vary by destination, consulate, visa category and applicant situation. A reservation supports your file; it is not a paid ticket for travel and does not guarantee visa approval or entry.
