Hotel Reservation for a Visa From Nigeria: What Each Embassy Expects

Hotel Reservation for a Visa From Nigeria: What Each Embassy Expects

Short answer: It depends on the destination, not on Nigeria. For a Schengen visa, accommodation proof is part of the EU Visa Code file, so a hotel reservation or host invitation is normally expected. For a UK visit visa, GOV.UK lists hotel bookings as less useful evidence. For Canada, IRCC lists proof of accommodation as a recommended itinerary document. Türkiye requires Nigerian ordinary passport holders to get a visa from a Turkish mission, which sets its own list. In every case, a hotel reservation should match your flight reservation for visa, your form and your funds, and you should not prepay a stay before a decision unless the checklist demands it.

Nigerian applicants often receive the same advice for every visa: book a hotel, book a flight, show a big balance. The destinations do not all ask for the same thing. Some treat accommodation proof as central evidence. Others say a hotel booking adds little. Following one blanket rule wastes money and can create inconsistencies that officers notice.

This guide compares the main destinations Nigerian visitors apply for, explains what each official source says about accommodation, and gives a practical checklist for building a consistent file from Lagos, Abuja or Port Harcourt. It does not replace the checklist from your visa application centre, which can add local requirements.

Key facts

  • Schengen: the EU Visa Code requires documents relating to accommodation, or proof of means to cover it, for short-stay visas.
  • United Kingdom: GOV.UK lists hotel bookings and flight bookings (unless transiting) as documents that are less useful as evidence.
  • Canada: IRCC lists proof of accommodation in the recommended Itinerary documents, with flight details and event registration.
  • Türkiye: the Ministry of Foreign Affairs says Nigerian ordinary and official/service passport holders need a visa; diplomatic passports are exempt for up to 90 days.
  • Your visa application centre’s checklist can add local documents; read it before you book anything.
  • Kenya’s eTA rules list Nigeria among African countries whose nationals are exempt from the eTA for up to 60 days.
  • EU Visa Code Article 9 lets you lodge a Schengen application no more than six months, and as a rule no later than 15 calendar days, before the trip.

Official-source check: We checked the EU Visa Code (Article 14), GOV.UK’s supporting-documents guide for visiting the UK, IRCC’s visitor visa application page and the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs visa information for foreigners (Nigeria entry). Embassy and visa-centre checklists for Nigeria can add requirements, so confirm with them before you submit.

Do Nigerian Applicants Need a Hotel Reservation for a Visa?

Do Nigerian Applicants Need a Hotel Reservation for a Visa?

No rule applies to Nigerian passport holders as such. Accommodation requirements are set by the country you are visiting, and sometimes refined by its embassy in Abuja or consulate in Lagos. What changes for Nigerian applicants is usually the level of scrutiny, not the list of documents. That makes consistency more important than volume.

A good accommodation record answers four questions: where you will stay, for which nights, who pays and whether that is affordable. A hotel reservation answers the first two. Your bank statements or a sponsor’s evidence answer the last two. Officers read them together.

Common mistake: Paying in full for a non-changeable hotel stay months before a decision. If the visa is delayed or refused, the money is at risk, and the paid booking rarely carries more weight than a reservation that shows the same details.

What Does Each Destination Ask For?

Destination

Official position on accommodation

What Nigerian applicants usually submit

Schengen area

Documents relating to accommodation or means to cover it (Visa Code Art. 14)

Hotel reservation or host invitation for every part of the stay

United Kingdom

Hotel bookings listed as less useful evidence

Accommodation plan in the form and letter; host evidence if hosted

Canada

Proof of accommodation recommended as itinerary evidence

Hotel reservation or host letter with host status and address

Türkiye

Visa required from a Turkish mission for ordinary passports

Follow the mission’s list, which commonly includes accommodation

UAE

Visa arranged by airline, agent, hotel or online portal

Hotel stay if the hotel sponsors; otherwise the sponsor’s list

The pattern is clear. Schengen files need accommodation evidence. UK files need a credible plan, not a booking. Canada files benefit from accommodation evidence. Türkiye and the UAE depend on the issuing route.

How Should a Schengen File From Nigeria Show Accommodation?

How Should a Schengen File From Nigeria Show Accommodation?

Schengen consulates apply the EU Visa Code, which asks for documents relating to accommodation, or proof of sufficient means to cover it. In practice, nearly every Schengen checklist issued in Nigeria asks for a hotel reservation or a host invitation that covers the planned stay.

  • Cover every night between arrival and departure, or explain any gap, such as a night train.

  • Use one record per city in date order for multi-city trips.

  • Make sure the first city on your accommodation records matches the main destination logic of your application.

  • For private stays, use the host invitation or sponsorship form the consulate specifies.

  • Keep the reservation dates inside your travel insurance and flight dates.

A BookForVisa hotel reservation for visa costs $15 per person and is issued for the property and dates you choose, with free date changes within the same day of booking. Our guide on accepted Schengen hotel itinerary formats shows what a consulate expects to see on the page.

How Should a UK File From Nigeria Show Accommodation?

The UK is different. GOV.UK’s supporting-documents guide lists hotel bookings among documents that are less useful as evidence for a visit application. What matters is the visitor test: a permitted purpose, funds whose origin is clear, ties to Nigeria and an intention to leave.

Give your accommodation plan on the online form and in a short covering letter. If a relative in the UK hosts you, include their invitation, proof of their status in the UK and evidence of how they will support you, as the guide asks for sponsors. If you choose to attach a hotel reservation, make sure it matches your form exactly. Our page on whether a UK visitor visa needs a flight ticket before approval explains the flight side of the same rule.

How Should a Canada File From Nigeria Show Accommodation?

IRCC lists an Itinerary under recommended documents for tourists, with three examples: flight details, proof of accommodation and registration for an event. Many Nigerian applicants visit family in Canada, and for them the host evidence is the accommodation proof: the invitation letter, proof of the host’s status in Canada, proof of their address and proof of your relationship.

If you will stay in hotels, upload a reservation for the dates on your form. Do not upload alternative bookings for different dates. Our guide to how a flight reservation helps a Canada tourist visa covers the matching flight record.

What About Türkiye and the UAE?

The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs says Nigerian ordinary and official/service passport holders are required to have a visa, while diplomatic passport holders are exempt for travel up to 90 days. The ministry’s entry for Nigeria does not mention the conditional e-Visa that it lists for some other nationalities, so plan on applying through a Turkish mission and follow its document list. Our page on flight reservations for a Türkiye visa covers the travel-date side of that file.

For the UAE, the official portal says tourist visas are arranged by UAE airlines, licensed travel agents or hotels, or applied for online. If a hotel sponsors you, you must keep a reservation with that hotel. Verify any agent carefully before sending documents.

How Do You Keep the Whole File Consistent?

  1. Write one master plan: dates, cities, where you stay each night, who pays.

  2. Copy dates from the master plan into the visa form, the covering letter, the flight reservation and the accommodation records.

  3. Check names against the passport, including middle names and spelling of surnames.

  4. Make sure the cost of accommodation is affordable from the funds you show, or explained by a sponsor.

  5. If you are hosted, attach the host’s status and address evidence, not only a letter.

  6. Remove any document that contradicts the plan.

Our guide to why inconsistent travel dates cause visa rejections lists the mismatches we see most.

What Do Three Example Nigerian Files Look Like?

These examples are fictional. They show how the same applicant profile produces a different accommodation section depending on the destination.

A Lagos banker applying for a Schengen tourist visa

Tunde plans nine nights in Paris and Amsterdam. His Schengen file contains a hotel reservation for five nights in Paris and one for four nights in Amsterdam, in date order, each in his name with full addresses. The dates match his flight reservation, his travel insurance and the dates on the application form. He applies to the French consulate because Paris is the longer stay. His bank statements show salary credits and savings that can cover the stated hotel budget comfortably.

The same banker applying for a UK visit visa

For London, Tunde attaches no hotel booking. His covering letter says he will stay in a mid-range hotel in central London for six nights with a budget of about GBP 150 a night, and his bank statements show the funds. The form gives the hotel area as his address. The application rests on his employment letter, his statements and his travel history, which now includes the Schengen trip.

An Abuja retiree visiting her daughter in Calgary

Mrs Eze plans eight weeks with her daughter, a Canadian citizen. Her itinerary upload contains the daughter’s invitation letter, a copy of her Canadian passport, a lease showing her address, a birth certificate linking mother and daughter, and a flight reservation for the planned dates. There is no hotel booking, because there is no hotel stay. Her pension statements show regular income, and her daughter’s letter says she will cover food and local transport.

How Do Visa Application Centres in Nigeria Handle Accommodation Documents?

Most destinations take applications in Nigeria through a visa application centre. The centre checks that the documents on its list are present, takes biometrics and forwards the file. It does not decide the application. That has two practical consequences.

  • If the centre’s checklist names an accommodation document, bring it. A missing item can delay acceptance of the file even if the embassy would decide without it.

  • Bring printed copies where the centre asks for paper. Some checklists still require printed hotel reservations, even when the embassy also accepts uploads.

  • Do not bring alternative bookings for different dates. The centre may forward everything, and the embassy will see both.

  • Keep the reference numbers of your reservations handy in case the centre or embassy contacts you.

If the centre’s list and the embassy’s website disagree, follow the stricter of the two and keep a copy of both pages. Check the list again a few days before your appointment, because centres update their checklists without notice.

When Should a Nigerian Applicant Book or Reserve Accommodation?

Timing is where many Nigerian files go wrong. People pay for hotels months ahead, then change the trip and forget to update the booking, or they apply with a reservation that has lapsed by the time the officer looks at it. The safer approach is to work back from the rules on when you can apply and how long decisions take.

Destination

Earliest you can apply

Decision time in the official source

When to fix accommodation

Schengen

No more than six months before the trip (Visa Code Art. 9)

15 calendar days, extendable to 45 (Art. 23)

Shortly before you lodge the application

United Kingdom

3 months before you travel (GOV.UK)

Not set as a fixed legal period

When you fill in the online form

Canada

No fixed earliest date on the IRCC page

Varies; biometrics needed first

Before you upload the itinerary

Kenya (if not exempt)

Before travel, through the official eTA site

Generally within 3 business days (eTA FAQ)

Before you apply for the eTA

For Schengen, Article 9 says applications are lodged, as a rule, no later than 15 calendar days before the start of the visit, and Article 23 says decisions are taken within 15 calendar days of an admissible application, extendable up to 45 days in individual cases. If you lodge six weeks ahead, your accommodation record needs to make sense on the day you lodge and still be accurate if the decision takes the full 45 days.

Which Destinations Do Not Need a Visa File From Nigeria at All?

Not every trip from Nigeria needs accommodation evidence for a visa. Some destinations exempt Nigerian passport holders or issue visas on arrival, and the accommodation question then shifts to the border or the airline.

Destination

Official position for Nigerian citizens

Accommodation question

Kenya

Kenya’s eTA rules list Nigeria among African countries exempt from the eTA for up to 60 days

Carry your lodging details for the border

Rwanda

Rwanda’s immigration directorate says citizens of African Union, Commonwealth and La Francophonie members get a visa on arrival with fees waived for 30 days; Nigeria is an AU and Commonwealth member

Rwandan missions list a hotel booking or host invitation for visa on arrival

Türkiye

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs lists Nigerian ordinary passport holders as requiring a visa

Follow the Turkish mission’s checklist

Exemptions change, so check the official page for your destination close to travel. Where you are exempt from a visa or eTA, airlines and border officers can still ask where you will stay, so keep a clear accommodation record on your phone and on paper.

How Do Insurance and Accommodation Dates Fit Together for Schengen?

The Visa Code sets the insurance standard for Schengen short-stay visas in Article 15. The insurance must cover repatriation for medical reasons, urgent medical attention, emergency hospital treatment or death, be valid throughout the territory of the member states, cover the entire period of the intended stay, and have minimum coverage of EUR 30,000. For a multiple-entry visa it must cover the first intended visit.

Applicants from Nigeria often buy insurance for exact flight dates and book accommodation that starts a day later or ends a day earlier. That is not a problem in itself, but each document should cover the same trip. Use the widest of the three date ranges for insurance, and make sure accommodation accounts for every night inside it.

  • Insurance start date: on or before the day you leave Nigeria.

  • Insurance end date: on or after the day you return.

  • Accommodation: every night between arrival in the Schengen area and departure.

  • Flight plan: the same arrival and departure dates as the accommodation.

  • Application form: the same dates again in the intended stay fields.

What Should a Nigerian Applicant’s Cover Letter Say About Accommodation?

A cover letter does not replace documents, but it helps the officer read them in the right order. For a Nigerian applicant, whose file may include employer letters, bank statements, a sponsor’s documents and accommodation, a short paragraph on where you will stay prevents confusion.

  1. Name each city and the nights you will spend there.

  2. For each stay, say whether it is a hotel, a rental or a host’s home.

  3. Give the full address and the document that proves it.

  4. If a sponsor is paying, say so and point to the sponsor’s evidence.

  5. If you are staying with family, name the host and their relationship to you.

GOV.UK’s supporting-documents guide adds a point that applies to UK applicants from Nigeria: documents not in English or Welsh need a full translation that can be independently verified by the Home Office, with the translator’s confirmation, the date, their full name and signature and their contact details. If your host’s documents or any accommodation record are in another language, translate them.

How Do You Avoid Paying Twice for Hotels Before a Decision?

The fear of paying for a hotel and then being refused is common. Most official sources do not require a paid hotel for a short-stay visa. The Czech list for Schengen, for example, names a hotel booking or voucher as acceptable evidence, and IRCC lists proof of accommodation without requiring prepayment.

What Do Three More Nigerian Trip Records Look Like?

An Abuja civil servant on a 10-day Nairobi work-and-leisure trip

Because Kenya’s eTA rules exempt Nigerian nationals for up to 60 days, she does not apply for an eTA. She still carries her return flight, the hotel record for the ten nights and a letter from her employer, because the airline and the Kenyan officer can ask about her stay. The accommodation record is for the border, not for a visa.

A Lagos entrepreneur visiting Kigali for a conference

He relies on Rwanda’s visa on arrival. Rwanda’s directorate says AU, Commonwealth and La Francophonie citizens get the visa on arrival with fees waived for 30 days, and Rwanda’s High Commission in South Africa lists a return flight and either a host invitation or a hotel booking among requirements. He carries the conference invitation, a hotel record for the nights not covered by the organiser and his return ticket.

A Port Harcourt couple on a Schengen trip through Paris and Rome

They lodge with the consulate of the country of their main destination, six weeks before travel. Their file shows four nights in Paris and five in Rome, a hotel record for each in both names, insurance from departure to return with at least EUR 30,000 cover, and bank statements that cover nine paid nights. Each date range matches the form.

What Does a Schengen Officer Do if the Accommodation Looks Unreliable?

Article 32(1)(b) of the Visa Code lists, as a refusal ground, reasonable doubts as to the authenticity of the supporting documents or the veracity of their contents, the reliability of the applicant’s statements, or the applicant’s intention to leave before the visa expires. Accommodation records feed into that test because they are among the easiest documents to check.

  • A hotel that does not exist at the address given creates a doubt about authenticity.

  • A booking for dates that do not match the form creates a doubt about veracity.

  • A host invitation from someone with no visible link to the applicant creates a doubt about reliability.

  • A long stay with no explanation of who pays can feed a doubt about intention to leave.

The fix in every case is consistency: one plan, one set of dates and evidence that an officer can verify. Article 32(3) gives refused applicants the right to appeal under the law of the member state that decided, and the refusal form sets out the reasons.

Which Official Pages Does This Guide Draw On?

Build the Accommodation Record Around the Destination

For Nigerian applicants, accommodation proof should follow the destination’s rule, not a one-size-fits-all checklist. Schengen files need it, Canada files benefit from it and UK files need only a clear plan. Use a reservation where it adds a dated record, use proper host evidence where family hosts you, and keep every date and name consistent with your form and flights.

Start with the destination’s official checklist and your visa centre’s list. Then issue accommodation evidence that covers exactly the nights on your form, without prepaying a stay before the decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Nigerian applicants need a hotel booking for a Schengen visa?

Schengen consulates require documents relating to accommodation or proof of means to cover it, so a hotel reservation or host invitation is normally part of the file.

Do I need a hotel booking for a UK visa from Nigeria?

No. GOV.UK lists hotel bookings among documents that are less useful as evidence. Give a clear accommodation plan and host evidence if you are hosted.

Is a hotel reservation enough for a Canada visa from Nigeria?

It documents where you will stay, but IRCC weighs your whole file, especially funds, ties and travel history. Use it as itinerary evidence, not the core of the file.

Can Nigerians get a Turkish e-Visa?

The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs entry for Nigeria says ordinary passport holders need a visa and does not list an e-Visa option, so plan on applying through a Turkish mission.

Should I pay for the hotel before my visa is approved?

Only if the checklist requires a paid booking. Most do not, and prepaying puts money at risk if the decision is delayed or negative.

Do visa centres in Nigeria accept printed hotel reservations?

Many checklists still ask for printed copies. Follow the centre’s list for your destination and bring paper copies if it asks for them.

Should hotel dates match my travel insurance?

For Schengen visas, yes. Insurance must cover the stay, so hotel, flight and insurance dates should all fall within the same window.

What if my relative is hosting me?

Use their invitation letter, proof of their legal status and proof of their address, plus proof of your relationship where asked. A hotel booking is not needed for those nights.

Do Nigerians need a Kenya eTA?

Kenya’s eTA rules list Nigeria among African countries whose nationals are exempt from the eTA for up to 60 days. Check the official eTA site before you travel.

How early can I apply for a Schengen visa from Nigeria?

The EU Visa Code says no more than six months before the start of the visit and, as a rule, no later than 15 calendar days before it.

Do my Schengen insurance dates need to match my hotel?

The insurance must cover the entire intended stay. Make sure your accommodation covers every night within that stay and that both match your form.

Friendly reminder: BookForVisa provides travel-proof documents for planning and visa-application support. Requirements vary by destination, consulate, visa category and applicant situation. A flight reservation can support a file, but it does not guarantee approval, boarding or entry.
