Short answer: To apply for a Schengen visa from Bangladesh, choose your main destination, then book with the service provider that country uses in Dhaka, such as VFS Global for Germany or the Netherlands. Apply 15 days to 6 months before travel. Adults pay €90, collected in taka. A flight reservation for visa costs $15 per person.
Bangladeshi passport holders need a visa for any short trip to the Schengen area, whether for tourism, family, business or an event. Only some Schengen countries have a visa section in Dhaka, and several of them also handle applications for other Schengen states under representation arrangements. That makes the Bangladesh route different from countries where almost every embassy is present: the first job is to find out who handles your main destination in Dhaka.
This guide is for people living in Bangladesh. It explains the EU-wide rules that apply everywhere, then uses the two most clearly documented Dhaka routes, Germany and the Netherlands, to show how local procedures differ. It covers who handles which country, fees in taka, appointments, documents, Germany's document verification fee, processing times and common mistakes. If you live in Pakistan, our Schengen visa from Pakistan guide covers that route instead.
Rules come from the European Commission's Schengen visa overview, NetherlandsWorldwide's Bangladesh application page and the German Embassy's Schengen visa page. Each Schengen country publishes its own checklist, so read your destination's page before you book.

Do Bangladeshi Citizens Need a Schengen Visa?
Yes. Bangladesh is on the EU list of countries whose citizens need a visa to enter the Schengen area, linked from the European Commission's Schengen visa page. A Schengen short-stay visa covers tourism, family visits, business, conferences and similar purposes for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Longer stays, work, study programmes and setting up a business need a national visa from the country concerned.
The Schengen area currently has 29 countries listed by the European Commission: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. Cyprus and Ireland are EU members outside Schengen. Some older pages still show a shorter list from before Croatia, Bulgaria and Romania joined, so rely on the Commission's current list.
Use our Schengen 90/180 calculator to check your days if you travel to Europe often.
Choosing Your Main Destination
The European Commission rule is the same everywhere: apply to the country you will visit. If you visit more than one, apply to the country where you will spend the longest time; if stays are equal, apply to the country you enter first. Our guide to choosing your main Schengen destination works through examples.
As a general rule, you apply at the consulate responsible for the country where you are legally resident. The German Embassy in Dhaka says responsibility depends only on your current main place of residence, not your place of birth or nationality, and that it does not handle applications from Bangladeshis living abroad. If you live in the UAE, Saudi Arabia or Malaysia, for example, apply there.
Who Handles Which Country in Dhaka
Not every Schengen state has a visa section in Bangladesh, and some embassies in Dhaka accept applications on behalf of other Schengen states. Two arrangements are confirmed on the countries' own official pages:
| Destination | Where to apply in Dhaka | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Poland | Netherlands visa application location (VFS Global Dhaka) | Check Poland's own visa requirements with the Polish embassy, as NetherlandsWorldwide advises |
| Estonia | German Embassy, through VFS Global Dhaka | Only the groups listed below; other applicants are told not to apply there |
Estonia: who may apply through Germany
The German Embassy says it accepts Estonian Schengen applications only from:
- holders of official passports, especially diplomatic and service passports, and official delegations;
- family members of Estonian and EU nationals;
- travellers declared bona fide travellers by the embassy;
- people who hold earlier visas from Estonia or EU countries and have used them properly.
Everyone else is strongly advised not to apply for an Estonian visa at the German Embassy in Dhaka, because the application will not be processed. The Embassy points them to the competent Estonian representations instead.
How to check routing for any other destination
- Open the visa pages of your main destination's foreign ministry and search for Bangladesh, Dhaka or 'country of residence'.
- If that country has no visa section in Dhaka, its site will name the embassy or country where Bangladeshi residents apply, which may be outside Bangladesh.
- Book only through the provider link on that official page, not through social media or agents.
- If two official pages disagree, follow the destination country's own page and ask its embassy by email before you pay.
Representation arrangements change, so treat any list you find elsewhere as a starting point only.
Germany: Schengen Visa Through VFS Dhaka
The German Embassy in Dhaka sends all Schengen applications through VFS Global. Its FAQ explains how the system works:
- Book your appointment directly with VFS; the Embassy's own appointment system is for other services.
- Slots are normally opened once a month, around mid-month, for the following month.
- If no slots are available, the Embassy has no further capacity; try again later.
- Expedited appointments cannot be granted, and neither the Embassy nor VFS can speed up processing.
- The Embassy does not work with brokers or agencies; the only costs are the visa fee and the VFS service fee.
Estonia through the German Embassy
The German Embassy handles Estonian Schengen visas only for limited groups: holders of official passports and official delegations, family members of Estonian and EU nationals, travellers declared bona fide by the embassy, and people who hold earlier Estonian or EU visas and used them properly. Others are told not to apply for Estonia there, as the file will not be processed.
Fees, verification and processing
Germany charges the Schengen fee in taka at submission: €90 for adults and €45 for minors at the mission's rate. The VFS service fee is paid in advance. The German Embassy adds that an extra fee of BDT 35,000 applies only in cases where document verification is necessary. Its processing notes say the visa section may, in certain cases, start a verification of your documents, covering public documents issued by Bangladeshi authorities and work proof documents, and that it will tell you about it during the interview or by email. It is not a standard charge on every tourist application. The visa fee is not returned if the visa is refused.
Standard processing for Schengen visas is 15 working days, counted from when the file reaches the Embassy, which can take up to five working days after you apply at VFS. Waiting time for an appointment is not included.
Netherlands: Schengen Visa Through VFS Dhaka
NetherlandsWorldwide tells residents of Bangladesh to apply at the VFS Global application centre in Dhaka. You can only submit there if you live in Bangladesh. The steps are:
- Complete your own online Schengen form, so it carries a unique code; do not use someone else's form.
- Gather the documents on the checklist for your main purpose of travel.
- Book your own appointment on the VFS Netherlands Bangladesh site, one per person, without intermediaries.
- Attend with your passport, documents and the checklist itself; give fingerprints, answer questions and pay the fees.
- Track the file with your VFS reference number, then collect your passport or have it sent.
The VFS Netherlands Dhaka page gives the centre address:
Netherlands Visa Application Centre, Borak Mehnur, 51/B, Level 7, Kemal Ataturk Avenue, Banani, Dhaka 1213 Get directions
VFS lists submissions Sunday to Thursday, 09:00 to 14:00, and passport collection 15:00 to 16:00. It shows its service fee as BDT 2,368 (listed as EUR 17) and says payment at the centre is cash only. The Dutch 2026 Bangladesh consular fees are €90 for adults, €45 for children aged 6 to 11 and no fee under 6; there is no fixed taka figure, as the amount is converted at the exchange rate on the day of payment. The card and cash options on that fee page describe payment at the embassy, which differ from the cash-only VFS counter. Children under 12 do not give fingerprints but must still attend. Schengen applications for the Netherlands go to VFS, not to the embassy.
Other Destinations: France, Italy, Spain and More
For destinations other than Germany and the Netherlands, start with the embassy's own visa page. France, for example, tells applicants in Bangladesh to create their file on France-Visas and then submit it at the local visa centre, as explained on its Dhaka visa page. Providers and addresses change, so book only through the link on the embassy's official site.
Whichever country you apply to, the EU-wide rules on fees, timing, insurance and the 90/180 limit stay the same. What changes is the provider, appointment system, payment method and local checklist.

Schengen Visa Fees in Bangladesh
| Applicant | Visa fee |
|---|---|
| Adult (12 and over) | €90 |
| Child aged 6 to 11 (under 12) | €45 |
| Child under 6 | No fee |
| Germany document verification, only if the visa section initiates it | BDT 35,000 |
| Service provider charge | Extra, set by the provider |
The European Commission lists €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6 to 12, and NetherlandsWorldwide lists no visa fee for children under 6. Germany converts the euro fee to taka at the mission's rate. Some categories, such as certain family members of EU citizens and young people aged 25 or under representing non-profit organisations at events, may pay less or nothing; check your destination's fee page.
When to Apply and How Long It Takes
You can apply no earlier than 6 months before travel and at least 15 days before it; seafarers can apply up to 9 months ahead. The European Commission gives an EU-wide normal processing time of 15 days, extendable to up to 45 days if more detailed examination or extra documents are needed.
In Bangladesh, the wait for an appointment is often the longest part. Germany releases slots monthly and warns that high demand means longer waits for appointments and processing. If your travel date is within two weeks of applying, the Embassy suggests checking whether you can postpone the trip.
| Step | Typical timing |
|---|---|
| Earliest application | 6 months before travel |
| Latest application | 15 days before travel |
| Germany: file reaching Embassy | Up to 5 working days after VFS |
| Germany: standard processing | 15 working days |
| EU-wide normal processing (Visa Code) | 15 calendar days, up to 45 if extended |
Documents Bangladeshi Applicants Need
The EU-wide core list is the same for every country:
- A passport valid at least 3 months after you leave the Schengen area, issued within the last 10 years, with blank pages.
- A completed and signed application form.
- An ICAO-standard photo.
- Travel medical insurance covering emergency care, hospitalisation and repatriation.
- Supporting documents on the purpose of the trip, your financial means, accommodation and return to Bangladesh.
- Fingerprints at submission, with some exemptions.
German Embassy rules add useful detail. Documents must be A4, in German or English, or translated. Use the online VIDEX form, print it with its barcode and sign the declaration of consent. Do not send documents to the visa section before you apply. Germany also publishes a list of accepted medical insurance providers, and it cannot issue the visa earlier than the start date of your travel health insurance.
Proof of ties and funds
| Your situation | Evidence that usually helps |
|---|---|
| Employee | Employer letter with role, salary, start date and approved leave; salary account statements. |
| Business owner | Trade licence, tax documents, business and personal bank statements. |
| Student | Institution letter and proof of who pays. |
| Sponsored by family | Sponsor letter, sponsor's statements and proof of relationship. |
| Invited by family in Europe | Invitation, host's status and address, and any formal obligation letter the destination requires. |
Germany may verify Bangladeshi public documents and work proofs, so every paper must be genuine. Falsified documents or a false purpose lead to refusal.
Bank Statements and Financial Proof
Every Schengen state asks for evidence that you can pay for the trip. The European Commission lists financial means as a core supporting document, and each consulate decides what it accepts. In Bangladesh, the usual evidence is personal bank statements for recent months, salary slips or an employer letter, and tax documents for business owners.
Officers look for a steady pattern: regular income, normal spending and a balance that covers the trip after everyday costs. A large deposit shortly before applying, with no explanation, invites questions. If you received a bonus, sold property or got a family transfer, attach the supporting paper. Keep the trip cost on your form realistic for the hotels, flights and insurance you show.
In certain cases the German visa section verifies public documents issued by Bangladeshi authorities and work proofs; where verification is necessary, an extra BDT 35,000 applies. Submit only documents you are sure are genuine and consistent with each other.
Visiting Family, Business Trips and Events
Family and friends
If someone in Europe invites you, include their invitation letter, a copy of their passport or residence permit, and their address. Some countries use a formal sponsorship or obligation form for hosts who cover your costs; follow the visit checklist of your main destination, since forms differ by country.
Business
For meetings, trade fairs or conferences, include the invitation from the European company or organiser, a letter from your Bangladeshi employer confirming the trip and who pays, and business registration papers if you own the company. Germany's FAQ makes clear that urgent business trips still go through VFS, and that expedited appointments are not available, so plan around slot releases.
Students and young people
Short study visits, sports events and cultural programmes of up to 90 days can use a Schengen visa, with a letter from the organiser and your institution. Longer study needs a national visa.
Travel Medical Insurance
Medical insurance covering emergency care, hospitalisation and repatriation, including in the event of death, is an EU-wide requirement. Buy a policy that covers all Schengen states for every day of your trip, and print the certificate.
The German Embassy in Dhaka publishes a list of insurance companies whose travel policies it currently accepts, and it warns that it cannot issue a visa with a start date earlier than the start date of your insurance. If you change your dates, update the policy so it still covers the whole stay.
Fingerprints and Repeat Applicants
Most applicants give fingerprints at the visa centre, and they are stored in the EU Visa Information System. NetherlandsWorldwide explains that if you are 12 or older and gave fingerprints for a Schengen application in person within the last 59 months, you may not need to give them again, though the ministry may still ask you to come back if it cannot copy them. You can always choose to give fingerprints again.
If you have travelled to Europe before, include copies of earlier Schengen visas and entry stamps. A record of trips taken and returned on time is one of the strongest signs of a genuine visitor.
Avoiding Agents and Scams
The German Embassy states that it does not work with brokers or agencies, that such people cannot secure appointments, and that the only costs are the Embassy's visa fee and the VFS service fee. NetherlandsWorldwide also tells applicants to book their own appointment and avoid intermediaries.
Be wary of anyone selling guaranteed appointments, approval or faster processing. Book only through the provider link on the embassy's official page, and pay fees only at the visa centre or through the official booking system.
Flight Reservations for a Schengen Visa From Bangladesh
Consulates want to see a realistic route into and out of the Schengen area that matches your main destination. You do not need to buy a full fare before the decision; a verifiable reservation is the usual way to show your plan.
- BookForVisa reservations cost a flat $15 per person and carry a real PNR that can be checked.
- Each reservation is valid for 48-72 hours, so time it close to your VFS appointment.
- Date changes are free on the booking day only.
- It can be issued even while you are at the visa centre.
- It works for visa applications and onward-travel proof.
If you use another provider, a dummy ticket should still be a verifiable reservation that matches your form, never an edited image. Keep the first entry country consistent with your main-destination choice.
Travelling With Children
Each child needs a separate application and appointment. Children under 12 do not give fingerprints but must attend, according to NetherlandsWorldwide. Most checklists ask for the child's birth certificate and both parents' passport copies, and a parental consent letter where a parent is not travelling; follow the minors section of your destination's checklist. Germany requires documents in German or English, with translations where needed.
After the Decision
VFS informs you when your passport is ready to collect or is being sent. The German Embassy asks you to check your visa as soon as you receive it and to report errors at once by email, giving your passport number, full name and the correction needed. Check the name, passport number, validity dates, number of entries and days allowed.
If you are refused, you receive a letter giving the reasons and explaining how to challenge the decision in that country. Fix the specific weakness before applying again.
At the border: EES
The EU Entry/Exit System records non-EU travellers' entries and exits digitally, with fingerprints and a facial image, instead of passport stamps. It changes border procedures, not visa requirements.

Common Mistakes Bangladeshi Applicants Make
- Applying to the wrong country because it has an easier appointment.
- Assuming every Schengen state has a visa section in Dhaka. Check representation first.
- Applying for Estonia through Germany outside the allowed groups.
- Paying brokers for appointments. Germany warns it does not work with agencies.
- Untranslated Bengali documents. Provide German or English translations.
- Insurance that starts late. Germany cannot issue the visa before the insurance start date.
- Using someone else's form on the Dutch route.
- Applying too late for monthly slot releases.
Planning Timeline for Bangladeshi Applicants
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| 6 months before | Fix the itinerary and main destination; check who handles it in Dhaka. |
| 5 to 6 months before | Watch for slot releases and book the VFS appointment. |
| 2 to 3 months before | Collect statements, employer or business papers, translations and insurance. |
| Appointment week | Get a flight reservation and hotels that match the form; print the checklist. |
| After submission | Allow at least 15 working days for Germany, plus transfer time; buy the full fare after the visa is issued. |
How This Guide Differs From Other Schengen Guides
Our Schengen guides for Pakistan, Nigeria and the Philippines describe those countries' centres and appointment systems. Bangladesh has its own pattern: fewer visa-issuing embassies, representation for many destinations, monthly German slot releases, a BDT 35,000 fee only where German document verification is necessary, and the new Dutch route through VFS Dhaka.

Book your visa reservationFrequently Asked Questions
Do Bangladeshi citizens need a Schengen visa?
Yes. Bangladeshi passport holders need a Schengen short-stay visa for tourism, family visits, business or events in any of the 29 Schengen countries. It allows up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Work, long study and stays beyond 90 days need a national visa from the destination country instead.
Where do I apply for a Schengen visa in Bangladesh?
Apply to the country of your main destination through the provider it uses in Dhaka. Germany and the Netherlands both use VFS Global Dhaka. The Netherlands location also takes Polish applications, while Germany takes Estonian applications only for limited groups, so check the official routing page of the destination country before booking any appointment.
How much is a Schengen visa fee in Bangladesh?
The visa fee is €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6 to under 12, with no visa fee for children under 6. Germany collects it in taka at the mission rate, and VFS adds a service fee. Germany adds BDT 35,000 only where its visa section finds document verification necessary.
How do I get a German Schengen appointment in Dhaka?
Book directly with VFS Global, because all German Schengen applications in Dhaka go through VFS. Slots are normally released once a month, around mid-month, for the following month. Expedited appointments are not possible, and the Embassy warns that brokers and agencies cannot secure appointments for you, so never pay them.
How long does a Schengen visa take from Bangladesh?
Apply 15 days to 6 months before travel. Germany's standard processing is 15 working days after the file reaches the Embassy, which can take up to five working days after VFS. The EU-wide normal time is 15 calendar days, extendable to 45 days. Appointment waiting time comes on top of both.
Do I need a flight ticket for a Schengen visa from Bangladesh?
No paid ticket is required before the decision. Show a verifiable reservation that matches your form and main destination. A BookForVisa reservation costs $15 per person, has a real PNR, stays valid 48-72 hours and allows free date changes on the booking day only, so time it near your appointment.
Can I apply for a Schengen visa in Dhaka if I live abroad?
Generally no. Schengen applications go to the consulate responsible for where you legally live. The German Embassy says responsibility depends only on your current main residence, not nationality or birthplace, and NetherlandsWorldwide accepts Dhaka applications only from Bangladesh residents. Bangladeshis living abroad should apply in their country of residence.
Friendly reminder: BookForVisa prepares flight and hotel reservations to support visa applications and onward-travel proof. Requirements vary by destination, consulate, visa category and applicant situation. A reservation supports your file; it is not a paid ticket for travel and does not guarantee visa approval or entry.
