How to Apply for a Schengen Visa From Pakistan

How to Apply for a Schengen Visa From Pakistan

Short answer: To apply for a Schengen visa from Pakistan, pick your main destination first. Netherlands and Finland use VFS Global in Islamabad, Karachi or Lahore. Germany uses a free waiting list at the Embassy in Islamabad or the Consulate General in Karachi by province. Adults pay €90. A flight reservation for visa costs $15 per person.

Pakistani passport holders need a Schengen short-stay visa to visit any of the 29 Schengen countries for tourism, family visits, business or short events of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. The visa sticker is the same across Schengen, but in Pakistan the place you apply depends on which country is your main destination. The Netherlands (and Finland) take applications at VFS Global centres in Islamabad, Karachi and Lahore. Germany runs its own free waiting lists at the Embassy in Islamabad and the Consulate General in Karachi, split by province. Other destinations name their own partners on their Pakistan pages.

This guide is written for applicants living in Pakistan. It is different from our Schengen short-stay guide for India, our Schengen visa from Nigeria guide and our Schengen visa from the Philippines guide, because the partners, waiting-list rules and fraud warnings are local. The United Kingdom is not in Schengen; for that route see our UK visa from Pakistan guide.

Facts come from the European Commission's Schengen pages, NetherlandsWorldwide's Pakistan page, and the German missions in Pakistan unless another source is named. Confirm on those sites on the day you apply, because partners and addresses change.

Do You Need a Schengen Visa From Pakistan?

Yes. Pakistani passport holders need a Schengen short-stay visa for tourism, family visits, business meetings, short courses and other short stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. The European Commission lists the 29 Schengen countries without internal border controls: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

One short-stay visa covers travel across that area. The United Kingdom and Ireland are not in Schengen, so a Schengen visa does not let you enter them, and a UK visa does not let you enter France or Germany.

Pick the country of your main destination

Apply to the country where you will spend the most days, or where the main purpose of your trip is. If you spend equal time in several countries, apply to the one you enter first. Applying to a convenient centre for a trip that is mainly somewhere else is a common reason for refusal. Your flight and hotel plan should show the same main destination as the centre or mission you book.

Where Pakistanis Apply: VFS, German Missions or Other Partners

Pakistan does not use one partner for every Schengen country. The table below summarises routes confirmed on official pages we checked. Always open the destination country's own Pakistan page before you book.

Main destinationWhere Pakistanis apply (official)
NetherlandsVFS Global centres in Islamabad, Karachi and Lahore; also open to residents of Afghanistan.
FinlandSame Netherlands VFS locations in Pakistan, per NetherlandsWorldwide.
GermanyEmbassy in Islamabad or Consulate General in Karachi via free waiting lists, by province; no visa centre.
Other Schengen countriesCheck that country's Pakistan page; partners differ and change.

Do not invent a partner from a blog. Spain, Italy, France and others publish their own Pakistan instructions. If a page names a commercial partner, book only on the domain that partner and the mission confirm.

Netherlands and Finland: VFS in Islamabad, Karachi and Lahore

NetherlandsWorldwide's apply in Pakistan page is the origin-specific route for Dutch short stays. You apply at a VFS Global centre in Islamabad, Karachi or Lahore if you live in Pakistan or Afghanistan. Finland short-stay applications use the same Netherlands visa locations in Pakistan.

See the current street addresses on the VFS Global attend-centre pages linked from NetherlandsWorldwide. We do not paste third-party address lists here; open the official attend-centre list when you book.

Unique-code form

Complete your own Schengen application form online so you receive a form with a unique code. NetherlandsWorldwide warns that forms without this code can cause processing problems, and you should not use someone else's form.

Appointments and scams

Book the appointment yourself on the VFS Global appointment system. Do not book through an intermediary. Make a separate appointment for each person. NetherlandsWorldwide states that you can only make an appointment through the VFS Global system; if another option is offered, treat it as a scam.

Apply up to 6 months before travel (9 months if you are a seafarer) and at least 15 calendar days before departure. To change or rearrange an appointment, contact VFS Global in Pakistan through the official channels.

Who may submit for you

Someone else may lodge your file if you are 12 or older, you applied in person for a Schengen, airport-transit or entry visa within the past 59 months, and fingerprints were taken then. They must bring a signed authorisation letter, their travel document and a copy, and all your checklist documents. Fingerprints stored in VIS can be reused by the Dutch ministry; the external provider cannot check that system, so you may still be asked to return if reuse fails.

At the centre

Bring every document on the VFS checklist for your purpose of travel, plus the checklist itself. At the appointment you submit the file and passport, give fingerprints unless an exception applies, answer questions, pay fees, choose collection or courier, and receive a reference number for tracking. Children under 12 must still attend even though they are not fingerprinted.

Fees on the Dutch route

NetherlandsWorldwide's consular fees in Pakistan list the Schengen visa at €90 for adults, €45 for children aged 6 to 11, and free for children under 6. Payment of consular fees can be made in cash in Pakistani rupees at the then-current rate. You always pay VFS service costs as well.

Germany From Pakistan: Free Waiting Lists by Province

Germany does not outsource Schengen applications in Pakistan to a visa centre. The German missions' Schengen visa page requires online registration on the Embassy Islamabad or Consulate General Karachi systems.

Anti-fraud warning

The missions warn that fraudulent agents masquerade as embassies and offer false registrations or faster appointments. Registrations on the waiting lists are free of charge. If anyone asks for money at this stage, report them to the Pakistani police. Only one appointment is needed per person; multiple registrations for the same applicant are refused or denied entry at the appointment.

Islamabad waiting list

The German Embassy Islamabad operates a waiting list. You cannot book a final slot directly; you register, receive a waiting-list number by email, and later get confirmation when the appointment is set. Applicants from Islamabad Capital Territory, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab register on the Islamabad system. The Embassy address is Ramna 5, Diplomatic Enclave, Islamabad Get directions.

Karachi waiting list

The Consulate General in Karachi also uses a waiting list because of high demand. You register first; appointments are then allocated in chronological order of complete registrations. Applicants from Sindh and Balochistan use the Karachi system. The Consulate General address is 92-A/7, Block 5, Clifton, Karachi, Pakistan Get directions. Visa section hours are Monday to Friday 08:00 to 12:00, with passport collection Monday to Thursday 13:30 to 14:30.

Videx form and documents

Use the Videx online visa-application form and bring the print-out that includes the barcode on the last page. The barcode speeds data entry at the counter. Follow the category checklists on the mission site and bring documents in the stated order.

Pakistani passports must be signed (or carry a thumb impression) to be valid; the Embassy notes it cannot print a visa in an unsigned passport. For a minor, the minor signs or adds a thumb impression, not a parent.

Fees and timing

The missions' fees page lists the Schengen C visa at €90, children aged 6 to 12 at €45, and airport transit at €90, due in PKR at the current exchange rate. Processing for short-stay visas usually takes about fourteen calendar days from the day of application and can be longer in peak seasons. You may apply up to six months in advance.

Remonstration abolished

From 1 July 2025 the voluntary remonstration (objection) procedure after an initial refusal letter was ended indefinitely. If a visa is refused, follow the options stated in the refusal letter rather than expecting the old remonstration path.

Fees and Timing Across Partners

The European Commission sets the standard Schengen visa fee at €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6 to 12. Children under 6 are usually free. VFS and other partners add their own service fees in PKR, shown when you book.

Apply at least 15 calendar days before travel and no more than 6 months ahead. German files usually take about 14 calendar days once lodged. Dutch files follow the waiting-time information NetherlandsWorldwide publishes after VFS forwards the application. Summer and year-end seasons stretch both waiting lists and VFS calendars.

Documents Most Centres Ask For

Each destination publishes its own Pakistan checklist. The common core across Schengen applications is:

  • A passport valid at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from Schengen, issued within the last 10 years, with blank visa pages, and signed as Pakistani passports require.
  • A completed and signed Schengen application form (unique-code form for the Netherlands; Videx barcode print-out for Germany).
  • A recent passport photo meeting the destination's rules.
  • Travel medical insurance of at least €30,000 covering the whole Schengen area for your stay.
  • Proof of the purpose of the trip: hotel bookings, an invitation letter, a business letter or a conference registration.
  • Proof of funds: bank statements and, where asked, salary slips, company documents or a host's formal obligation.
  • Proof of ties to Pakistan: employment letter, business papers, school letter or family documents.
  • A travel plan that matches your form and the country whose centre or mission you booked.

Download the checklist for your exact destination and purpose. Germany asks you to follow its category order closely. NetherlandsWorldwide points you to the VFS checklist for your primary purpose of travel.

Flight and hotel proof

Most checklists ask for a flight reservation and hotel bookings that match your dates. You do not need to buy a full paid ticket before the decision. A reservation with a real PNR shows the route the main-destination rule requires. Keep hotel bookings verifiable and matched to the same dates as your form and flight reservation.

Documents by Applicant Type in Pakistan

Beyond the common core, missions look for proof that you will leave the Schengen area. Patterns that appear across official checklists include:

Your situationEvidence that usually helps
EmployeeEmployment letter on company letterhead stating role, salary and approved leave; recent salary slips; bank statements showing salary credits.
Business ownerSECP or other registration papers, tax filings and business account statements that show ongoing activity in Pakistan.
StudentEnrolment letter from your school or university, and proof of who pays for the trip.
Visiting family or friendsInvitation letter from the host with address and status in the Schengen country, plus proof of your relationship.
Business visitorInvitation from the European company with a meeting schedule, plus a letter from your Pakistani employer confirming the trip.

Insurance must cover at least €30,000 for medical costs and repatriation across the whole Schengen area for your entire stay. Buy it for the dates on your form, and keep the policy certificate with your file and with the documents you carry when you travel.

If a statement shows large unexplained deposits, add a short written explanation and source papers. Keep originals and photocopies; German counters work faster when the file arrives in the published order.

Flight Reservations for a Schengen Visa From Pakistan

Because your main destination decides which centre or mission you book, the flights in your file should land you in that country first, or spend the most nights there. A BookForVisa reservation helps you show that plan without paying for a ticket before approval.

  • BookForVisa reservations cost a flat $15 per person and include a real PNR that can be checked.
  • Each reservation is valid for 48-72 hours, so time it close to your appointment.
  • Date changes are free on the booking day only.
  • It can be issued even while you are at the visa centre.
  • It works for visa applications and for onward-travel proof.

If you use another provider, a dummy ticket should still be verifiable and match the dates on your form, insurance and hotel bookings. Do not invent a Netherlands-heavy itinerary for a German Embassy appointment, or the other way round.

Islamabad, Karachi or Lahore: How to Choose the City

For the Netherlands and Finland, NetherlandsWorldwide lists VFS centres in all three cities without tying you to a province. Choose the centre you can reach on the appointment day. Confirm the street address on the official VFS attend-centre page before you travel.

For Germany, the city is not a free choice. ICT, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, AJK and Punjab register in Islamabad. Sindh and Balochistan register in Karachi. Registering in the wrong list wastes time and can lead to refusal at the door.

Travel between cities can take a full day by road or a short flight. Book overnight stays if your appointment is early. Bring PKR cash or a card that works where the mission or partner requires local-currency payment.

Common Mistakes Pakistani Applicants Make

  • Paying an agent for a German waiting-list place. Registration is free; anyone who charges at that stage is a fraudster according to the missions.
  • Multiple German registrations. Only one appointment per person; extras are refused.
  • Wrong German province list. Punjab goes to Islamabad; Sindh goes to Karachi.
  • Using someone else's Dutch form. The unique code must be yours.
  • Booking VFS through an intermediary. NetherlandsWorldwide says book yourself on the official system.
  • Unsigned Pakistani passport. Germany will not print a visa in an unsigned passport.
  • Confusing the UK with Schengen. A UK visa from Pakistan does not cover France, Italy or Germany.
  • Dates that do not match. Keep the form, flight reservation, hotels and invitation on the same dates.

If Your Schengen Visa Is Refused

A refusal letter explains the reasons and your options. For German refusals after 1 July 2025, do not expect the old remonstration procedure; follow the letter. You may still prepare a stronger new file and register again on the waiting list when you are ready.

For Dutch refusals, NetherlandsWorldwide explains the next steps on its pages. Before you reapply anywhere, fix the reasons in the letter: a clearer main destination, stronger ties to Pakistan, bank statements that cover the trip, and an itinerary that matches the centre or mission you book.

After any approval, check the sticker at once. If details are wrong, NetherlandsWorldwide tells Dutch applicants to email the Dutch embassy in Islamabad promptly. Carry copies of funds, insurance, accommodation and return travel when you fly; a visa does not guarantee entry.

What Happens After You Apply

VFS gives you a reference number for online tracking on the Dutch route. German applicants follow the status information in their waiting-list and appointment emails. The mission, not VFS, decides.

When the passport is ready you collect it or receive it by courier, depending on what you chose and paid for. Check name, passport number, validity dates, number of entries and number of days. The validity window is the period in which you may travel; the number of days is the maximum stay inside that window.

Authorise someone in writing if they will collect for you. Bring the proof of payment VFS issued when you collect on the Dutch route.

Planning Timeline for Pakistani Applicants

A practical plan for a trip in peak summer looks like this:

WhenWhat to do
4 to 5 months beforeFix itinerary and main destination; check passport signature, validity and blank pages.
3 to 4 months beforeOpen the destination's Pakistan page; note VFS, German waiting list or other partner.
10 to 12 weeks beforeGather bank statements, employment papers and invitations; buy insurance of at least €30,000.
8 to 12 weeks beforeComplete the unique-code or Videx form; book VFS or register on the German waiting list.
Appointment weekGet a flight reservation matching your main destination and hotel confirmations; print originals and copies.
After submissionAllow about 14 calendar days for Germany, plus courier time; check the sticker before buying a full ticket.

German waiting lists can run longer than the 14-day decision clock. Register as soon as your dates are firm inside the six-month window. Keep digital and paper copies of everything you submit.

Spain, Italy, France and Other Partners in Pakistan

This guide focuses on the Netherlands, Finland and Germany because those missions publish clear, origin-specific Pakistan instructions on pages that returned successfully during our check. Spain, Italy, France and other Schengen states also receive applications from Pakistan, but each names its own partner and checklist.

Open the destination country's Pakistan embassy or consulate page and follow only the partner it names that day. Do not copy an address from a third-party directory. If the official page links to BLS, VFS, TLS or another provider, book on that provider's official domain after you confirm the destination still uses it.

Representation agreements change. A country that once took files in Islamabad may move to Karachi or Lahore, or the reverse. Re-check before you pay for travel to the centre.

How to confirm the right partner

  1. Write down your main destination and nights in each Schengen country.
  2. Search that country's foreign ministry or embassy site for Pakistan and Schengen or short stay.
  3. Note whether it names VFS Global, a German mission, BLS, TLS or another partner.
  4. Confirm whether your province changes the centre, as it does for Germany.
  5. Book only on the official partner domain or the mission's own system.

Afghanistan Residents Applying in Pakistan

NetherlandsWorldwide states that people who live in Afghanistan may also submit Netherlands Schengen applications at the VFS Global centres in Islamabad, Karachi or Lahore. If you live elsewhere, apply in the country where you live unless NetherlandsWorldwide's outside-residence rules allow an exception.

German short-stay rules for Afghan applicants appear on a separate German missions page. Follow that page rather than assuming the Pakistani waiting-list split applies unchanged. Bring the residence and identity evidence the destination checklist asks for when you apply from outside your home country.

How This Differs From Other Schengen Origin Guides

Our India, Nigeria and Philippines Schengen guides describe different partner maps: TLS and a Lagos Consulate for Nigeria, VFS and TLS mixes for the Philippines, and India's own VFS network. Pakistan's distinctive pieces are the Dutch and Finnish VFS trio open to Afghanistan residents, the unique-code form warning, and Germany's free provincial waiting lists with a public anti-agent notice.

Link those sibling guides when you need another origin's rules. Do not paste a Nigeria TLS address or a Philippines BLS checklist into a Pakistan file. Your flight reservation should match the Pakistan centre or mission you actually booked.

Keep hotel and flight dates aligned with the unique-code or Videx form, and use verifiable hotel confirmations that match the nights on your application.

Biometrics, Authorisation and Collection Details

On the Dutch route, fingerprints are taken at VFS unless you are under 12, physically unable with medical proof, travelling as certain official guests, or your prints from a Schengen or entry visa in the past 59 months can be reused by the ministry. Because VFS cannot see VIS, many applicants still give prints again to avoid a second trip.

If someone else lodges your Dutch file under the 59-month rule, they need a signed authorisation letter, their passport and copy, and your full checklist. Children under 12 must still attend the appointment. For collection, bring ID and the VFS proof of payment, or give a signed authorisation to the person collecting.

On the German route, bring the Videx barcode print-out and documents in checklist order. Incomplete files slow the fourteen-day clock. Keep your own copies, because supporting papers are not always returned.

Insurance, Funds and Matching Dates

Buy travel medical insurance of at least €30,000 that names the Schengen area and covers your full stay for medical costs and repatriation. The certificate should show the same dates as your form and flight reservation. Policies that start after your planned entry, or that omit repatriation, are a common reason for delay.

Bank statements should show your name and enough balance or salary flow to fund the trip and return. If a relative sponsors you, include their statements and a clear sponsorship letter where the checklist asks for it. Avoid last-minute large deposits without explanation.

Align the unique-code or Videx form, hotel bookings, invitation and flight reservation on the same calendar. A Netherlands-heavy plan for a German waiting-list appointment, or the reverse, undermines the main-destination rule and wastes the fee.

Peak Seasons and Waiting-List Reality

German waiting lists lengthen before European summer and the December holidays. Register as soon as your travel dates are firm inside the six-month window. The fourteen-day decision clock starts only after you attend and lodge a complete file, not on the day you join the list.

Dutch VFS calendars also fill in those peaks. Book yourself on the official system and avoid intermediaries. If you need both a Schengen trip and a UK trip, sequence the applications; neither visa substitutes for the other.

Carry digital scans of every page you submit. When a mission asks for one more statement or a clearer invitation, you can reply the same day without rebuilding the file from memory.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I apply for a Schengen visa from Pakistan?

Choose the Schengen country of your main destination, then follow that country's Pakistan page. Netherlands and Finland use VFS Global in Islamabad, Karachi or Lahore. Germany uses a free waiting list at the Embassy in Islamabad or the Consulate General in Karachi, split by province. Adults pay the standard ninety-euro Schengen fee.

How much is the Schengen visa fee in Pakistan?

The standard fee is €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6 to 12. Children under 6 are usually free of the visa fee. Germany collects the amount in Pakistani rupees at the mission's exchange rate. VFS Global adds its own service charge on the Netherlands and Finland route in Pakistan.

Where do I apply for a Netherlands visa in Pakistan?

Book an appointment yourself at a VFS Global centre in Islamabad, Karachi or Lahore if you live in Pakistan or Afghanistan. Complete your own online form so it carries a unique code before you book. Finland short-stay applications use the same Netherlands visa locations in those three cities, according to NetherlandsWorldwide.

How do German Schengen appointments work in Pakistan?

Register once on the free waiting list that matches your province. Islamabad Capital Territory, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, AJK and Punjab use Embassy Islamabad. Sindh and Balochistan use Consulate General Karachi. Anyone who charges money for waiting-list registration is a fraudster under the German missions' public warning, so report that person to police.

How long does a Schengen visa take from Pakistan?

Apply at least 15 calendar days and no more than 6 months before travel. Germany usually decides in about fourteen calendar days after you lodge the complete file at the mission. Dutch applications follow the waiting times that NetherlandsWorldwide publishes after VFS Global forwards your complete documents to the ministry.

Do I need a flight ticket for a Schengen visa from Pakistan?

No paid ticket is required before the decision. Your file must show a travel plan that matches the country whose centre or mission you booked. A BookForVisa reservation has a real PNR, costs $15 per person, stays valid 48-72 hours and allows free date changes on the booking day only.

Is a UK visa the same as a Schengen visa from Pakistan?

No. The United Kingdom is not in the Schengen area. A UK visitor visa does not let you enter France, Italy, Germany or any other Schengen country, and a Schengen visa does not let you enter the United Kingdom. Apply for each route separately if your trip includes both destinations.

Friendly reminder: BookForVisa prepares flight and hotel reservations to support visa applications and onward-travel proof. Requirements vary by destination, consulate, visa category and applicant situation. A reservation supports your file; it is not a paid ticket for travel and does not guarantee visa approval or entry.
