Short answer: To apply for a UK visa from Pakistan, apply online for a Standard Visitor visa no earlier than 3 months before travel, pay £135, then give biometrics at a VFS centre in Islamabad, Lahore or Karachi, or the premium centre in Mirpur. Decisions usually take 3 weeks. A flight reservation for visa files costs $15 per person.
Pakistani passport holders need a visa before visiting the UK, whether for a holiday, a family visit, a wedding as a guest, business meetings or a short course. You apply online with UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI), pay in pounds, and then attend a visa application centre in Pakistan to prove your identity, give fingerprints and a photo, and provide your documents.
This guide is written for applicants living in Pakistan. It covers which visa fits your trip, fees, the Home Office guide to supporting documents including the documents it says are less useful, financial evidence and family sponsors in the UK, Urdu translations, the VFS centres in Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi and the premium centre in Mirpur, the missed-appointment rule, warnings about unauthorised agents, the TB test and the approved clinics in Pakistan with fees in rupees, priority services, eVisas and a planning checklist. Applying from India or Nigeria? We have separate UK guides for those countries; this one focuses on Pakistani centres, clinics and evidence.
Facts come from GOV.UK and UKVI pages, the GOV.UK list of TB clinics in Pakistan and the VFS Global UK Pakistan site unless another source is named. Fees and rules change, so confirm on those sites on the day you apply.

Which UK Visa Do Pakistanis Need?
Pakistani passport holders must apply for a visa before travelling to the UK as a visitor; you can confirm this with the GOV.UK check if you need a UK visa tool. For short trips the usual route is the Standard Visitor visa, which normally lets you stay up to 6 months.
GOV.UK says you can visit as a Standard Visitor:
- For tourism, for example a holiday.
- To see your family or friends.
- To volunteer for up to 30 days with a registered charity.
- To pass through the UK to another country (in transit).
- For certain business activities, for example attending a meeting or interview.
- For certain permitted paid engagements as an expert in your profession, such as giving lectures.
- To do a recreational course of up to 30 days, or to study, do a placement or take an exam (courses up to 6 months).
- As an academic, senior doctor or dentist, or for medical reasons.
You cannot do paid or unpaid work for a UK company or as a self-employed person (unless it is a permitted paid engagement), claim public funds, live in the UK for long periods through frequent or successive visits, or marry, register a civil partnership or give notice of either. Attending a relative's wedding as a guest is a family visit; getting married yourself needs a Marriage Visitor visa. If transit is your only reason, the Visitor in Transit visa costs £74.50.
What Does Being a Genuine Visitor Mean?
GOV.UK's eligibility rules say you must show that you will leave the UK at the end of your visit, can support yourself and any dependants during the trip (or have funding from someone else), can pay for your return or onward journey (or have funding for it), and will not live in the UK for extended periods through frequent or successive visits or make the UK your main home.
UKVI's guide to supporting documents recommends giving information about your circumstances in your home country and details of what you will do in the UK. Home Office visit caseworker guidance, published on GOV.UK, says officers look at your previous immigration and travel history, how long past visits lasted, your financial, family and social background, your ties to your country of residence, time spent in the UK in the last 12 months, and whether your stated reasons fit your circumstances. Travel to countries such as the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Schengen countries or Switzerland, where you complied with the rules, can support your case; first-time travellers are judged on other evidence.
The same guidance lists reasons officers may doubt an application, such as few family and economic ties at home while many family members live in the UK, previous deception by the applicant or a sponsor, and discrepancies between what the applicant and a sponsor say. This matters for Pakistani applicants visiting relatives, because the host's letter and your form must agree.
How Much Does a UK Visitor Visa Cost From Pakistan?
UKVI sets fees in pounds, paid online when you apply. Every person, including children, needs their own application and fee.
| Visa | Fee | Maximum stay |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Visitor visa | £135 | 6 months |
| Standard Visitor visa for medical reasons | £234 | 11 months |
| Standard Visitor visa for academics | £234 | 12 months |
| 2-year long-term Standard Visitor visa | £506 | 6 months per visit |
| 5-year long-term Standard Visitor visa | £903 | 6 months per visit |
| 10-year long-term Standard Visitor visa | £1,128 | 6 months per visit |
GOV.UK warns that UKVI may give a shorter visa than you asked for if it believes you cannot meet the requirements for the full period, and the fee is not returned if you get a shorter visa or the application is refused. If you are under 18 when you apply, a long-term visa is valid only until 6 months after your 18th birthday. Your visa may be withdrawn if your travel history shows you are repeatedly living in the UK for extended periods.
Other costs can include priority services, a TB test where needed, translations and any optional VFS services. VFS charges £20 to reschedule within five days of a missed appointment, as explained below.
What Goes in the Online Application?
GOV.UK's Standard Visitor application page lists the information you give in the form:
- The dates you plan to travel to the UK.
- Where you will stay during your visit.
- How much you think your trip will cost.
- Your current home address and how long you have lived there.
- Your parents' names and dates of birth (if known).
- How much you earn in a year (if you have an income).
- Details of any criminal, civil or immigration offences.
Depending on your circumstances, you may also need your travel history for the past 10 years, your employer's address and phone number, your partner's name, date of birth and passport number, the name and address of anyone paying for your trip, and the name, address and passport number of any family members in the UK. You must have a passport valid for the whole of your stay.
What Supporting Documents Help Pakistani Applicants?
UKVI's guide to supporting documents says its list is not exhaustive, but suggests documents that show your circumstances at home and what you will do in the UK:
Employed applicants
- A letter from your employer on company headed paper, giving your role, salary and length of employment.
- Proof of earnings, such as an employer letter with start date, salary, role and company contact details.
- Bank statements that show the origin of the funds held.
Self-employed and business owners
- Business registration documents or recent invoices confirming ongoing self-employment.
- Bank statements showing where the money in the account comes from.
Students
- A letter from your school or university on headed paper confirming enrolment and leave of absence.
- Financial evidence from whoever is paying for the trip.
Business visitors
- Letters from inviting or sending organisations explaining what you will do and who pays.
- For a business event or conference, an invitation letter from the organiser.
- For visits to UK colleagues, an employer letter confirming this, and if you will work with clients, that this is not the main purpose.
Everyone
- Copies of previous passports showing travel to other countries.
- Confirmation of legal residence, if you are not a Pakistani national or your right to live in Pakistan is not shown in your passport.
UKVI says digital images should be taken of original documents wherever possible, not copies. You do not need multiple copies of the same document if your family or group applies at the same time.
Documents UKVI Says Are Less Useful
This is the section many Pakistani applicants miss. The supporting documents guide lists types of documents that are less useful as evidence in visit applications:
- Bank statements or letters issued more than 1 year before the application.
- Credit card statements and photocopies of bank cards.
- Driving licence, evidence of car ownership and business cards.
- Educational certificates that are not required for your visa.
- Personal photographs and notarial certificates.
- Hotel bookings and flight bookings (unless transiting).
- Certificates relating to leisure activities, such as sports trophies.
- Travel insurance, and a sponsor's utility bills or council tax bills.
UKVI also says that submitting documents does not guarantee a visa, and asks you to bear this in mind when making any bookings before you have a visitor visa. So do not buy paid, non-flexible tickets or non-flexible hotel stays to strengthen a file. You still need planned dates and an address for the online form. A reservation helps you fill those fields consistently and show a realistic trip cost. Our guide to whether a flight ticket is required for a UK visitor visa before approval explains this, and our guide to hotel reservations for visa applications from Pakistan covers accommodation. Some travellers search for a dummy ticket; what matters is a real, checkable reservation, never an edited document.
Financial Evidence and Family Sponsors in the UK
GOV.UK does not publish a fixed rupee amount for visitors. You must show you can cover reasonable costs of your visit for yourself and any dependants, and pay for your return journey, or that someone else will. The supporting documents guide asks for financial documents that clearly show you have access to the funds, such as bank statements or building society books showing the origin of the funds, and proof of earnings.
- Use recent statements in your own name; statements over a year old are less useful.
- Make sure declared income, salary letters, business records and account credits agree.
- Explain large deposits with documents showing where the money came from.
- Match the trip cost you declare (flights, accommodation, daily spending) to the funds shown.
If a relative in the UK sponsors you
Many Pakistani applicants visit family already living in the UK. UKVI says that if someone else provides your travel, maintenance or accommodation, you should show what support they provide and whether it covers dependants, how it is provided, that they have enough funds to support themselves and their own dependants, your relationship to them, and that they are legally in the UK, for example with a British passport or residence document.
A sponsor's utility or council tax bills are on the less-useful list, so focus on their status, finances and relationship to you. Their invitation letter should match your form on names, dates, addresses and who pays. Our guide on hotel reservations for a UK visitor visa explains how accommodation details fit when you stay partly with family and partly in hotels.
Children, Translations and Urdu Documents
Children under 18
UKVI asks for a legal document showing the relationship between the child and at least one parent or guardian, such as a birth certificate or adoption papers, and a copy of the photo page of at least one parent's passport if they are not also applying. If the child has a different family name from the parent, you may be asked for evidence of the relationship, such as a birth certificate or a parent's marriage or divorce certificate.
If the child is not travelling with a parent or guardian, provide a signed letter from the parent confirming consent to travel, who the child is travelling with (with the adult's passport number), who will look after the child in the UK, and how the child will travel. UKVI says the application may be refused without this. Each child needs their own application, fee and appointment.
Translations
Documents that are not in English or Welsh, such as Urdu certificates or letters, must come with a full translation that the Home Office can independently verify. Each translation must contain the translator's confirmation that it is accurate, the date of translation, the translator's full name and signature, and the translator's contact details.
Where Are the UK Visa Application Centres in Pakistan?
VFS Global runs UK visa application centres in Pakistan as an official partner of UKVI. Its centre list shows:
| Centre | Type | Days and hours |
|---|---|---|
| Islamabad | Visa Application Centre | Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 17:00 |
| Karachi | Visa Application Centre | Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 17:00 |
| Lahore | Visa Application Centre | Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 17:00 |
| Mirpur | Premium Application Centre | Monday to Wednesday, 08:00 to 17:00 |
Mirpur, in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, is listed as a Premium Application Centre and opens only three days a week, so check its services and charges on the VFS site before booking. VFS also offers a Super Flexi Service that lets you attend any centre in Pakistan within 15 days of booking.
Missed appointments
VFS announced on 6 October 2026 that if you miss your appointment, you no longer need to submit a new application. You can reschedule within five days of the missed appointment for a fee of £20 by logging into your account and choosing the reschedule option.
Beware of unauthorised agents
On 20 July 2026, VFS warned applicants in Pakistan to avoid third parties outside the centre who claim to represent VFS Global or Gerry's. Payments made or personal information shared with them are at your own risk, and VFS says it is not responsible for losses, delays or adverse visa outcomes from unauthorised agents. Use only official channels.
The British High Commission in Islamabad does not take visa applications from the public; GOV.UK says public access to its offices is by appointment only. Your contact point is the VFS centre and UKVI.
Your Appointment and Biometrics
GOV.UK says that as part of your online application you book an appointment at a visa application centre. At the appointment you:
- Prove your identity with your passport or travel document.
- Have your fingerprints and a photo (biometric information) taken.
- Provide the documents that show you are eligible for a Standard Visitor visa.
You get your passport back on the same day. The centre may keep some of your other documents while the application is processed, and you will be told what they need when you apply. If you apply with family members, each person attends their own appointment, though you can apply on behalf of your partner and child if they cannot apply themselves.
Do Pakistanis Need a TB Test for a UK Visa?
Pakistan is on the GOV.UK list of countries where a TB test is needed. You need one if you are coming to the UK for 6 months or more, have lived in a listed country for 6 months or more, and were living there within the last 6 months. A standard 6-month visit usually does not need one, but GOV.UK says the online form may ask for a TB certificate if you are visiting for more than 6 months, such as on a medical or academic visitor visa. Returning residents and fiancé(e)s on family visas need a test even for shorter stays.
The test is a chest x-ray, with a sputum sample if the x-ray is not clear. The certificate is valid for 6 months from the x-ray, and children under 11 do not normally have an x-ray. GOV.UK's Pakistan clinic list (updated 20 February 2026) shows these approved clinics:
| Clinic | City | Fee: under 11 / 11 and over |
|---|---|---|
| AMC, G-6 Markaz | Islamabad | PKR 11,000 / PKR 15,000 |
| IOM Migration Health Assessment Centre (F-10 and G-8 clinics) | Islamabad | PKR 10,000 / PKR 14,000 |
| AMC, Chaudhary Ali Anwar Road | Lahore | PKR 11,000 / PKR 15,000 |
| IOM Migration Health Assessment Centre, Gulberg III | Lahore | PKR 10,000 / PKR 14,000 |
| IOM Migration Health Assessment Centre, PECHS Block 6 | Karachi | See GOV.UK list |
| IOM Migration Health Assessment Centre, Sector F-2 | Mirpur AJK | PKR 10,000 / PKR 14,000 |
The Home Office will not accept a certificate from a clinic it has not approved. Clinics ask you to bring photo ID such as your passport or national ID card, a copy of it, 3 recent passport-size photos with a white background, and the test fee; AMC also asks for its applicant history questionnaire and appointment confirmation.
How Long Does a UK Visa Take From Pakistan?
GOV.UK says you will usually get a decision within 3 weeks once you have applied online, proved your identity and provided your documents. You get an email when the Home Office has decided.
If eligible, the GOV.UK faster decision page lists:
- Priority service: £500 extra, usually a decision within 5 working days.
- Super priority service: £1,000 extra, usually a decision by the end of the next working day after a weekday appointment, or 2 working days after a weekend or bank holiday appointment.
- Each family member applying with you pays for the faster service too.
You might wait longer if the Home Office needs to check details with other departments or asks for more information. Because you can apply only 3 months ahead, start early in that window and leave room for any request for more information. Avoid paying for flights until you have a decision; reservations with a real PNR stay valid 48-72 hours, so order them close to submission.
What Happens After Your UK Visa Decision?
If the visa is granted
GOV.UK says a successful applicant gets an eVisa, a digital record of identity and immigration status. To access it, you create a UKVI account, confirm your identity and link the account to your eVisa; this is usually immediate but can take up to 24 hours. VFS Pakistan also notes that the UK has moved to a digital immigration system. Check that your details and dates are correct before you travel.
At the UK border you may be asked about your plans and eligibility, so carry your accommodation details, return plans and proof of funds.
If the visa is refused
The decision explains the reasons. Themes in GOV.UK eligibility rules and Home Office guidance include not showing you will leave at the end of the visit, funds that do not match declared income or trip cost, unexplained deposits, weak ties to Pakistan, an unclear purpose, discrepancies with a sponsor's statements, or a pattern of long or frequent stays. Reapply only when you can answer those reasons with genuinely new evidence.
What Are Common Mistakes in UK Visa Applications From Pakistan?
- Applying more than 3 months before travel, which GOV.UK does not allow.
- Sending old bank statements, or ones with large unexplained deposits.
- Relying on a sponsor's utility bills instead of their status, finances and relationship proof.
- A UK host's letter that does not match your form on dates, address or who pays.
- Urdu documents without a complete, verifiable translation.
- Buying non-flexible flights or non-flexible hotel stays before a decision.
- Paying people outside VFS centres who claim to be VFS or Gerry's.
- Missing your appointment and not rescheduling within five days.
- Using a TB clinic that is not on the Home Office list for a stay of 6 months or more.
- Choosing a 10-year visa without a travel history that supports it.
Planning Checklist and Timeline
- 10 to 12 weeks before travel: confirm the visa type, check your passport is valid for the whole stay, and decide between 6-month and long-term visas.
- 8 to 10 weeks before: gather recent bank statements, employer or business letters, previous passports, and any UK sponsor's documents and invitation.
- Same weeks: get certified translations of any Urdu documents and prepare your planned dates, accommodation and trip cost.
- If your stay will be 6 months or more: book an approved TB clinic in Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi or Mirpur.
- Within the 3-month window: complete the GOV.UK form, pay the fee and book Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore or Mirpur.
- Appointment day: bring your passport and documents, give biometrics and take your passport home the same day.
- After the decision email: set up your UKVI account and eVisa, then book travel.
What Do Real UK Visa Applications From Pakistan Look Like?
Example 1: software engineer from Lahore, two-week holiday
Hamza, 29, plans 12 days in London and Edinburgh. He applies for a 6-month Standard Visitor visa for £135 and books the Lahore centre. His file has an employer letter on company letterhead with his role, salary and length of employment, recent bank statements showing salary credits, and earlier passports with trips to the UAE and Malaysia. He uses a reservation to fill in planned dates and hotel details, and keeps his passport the same day.
Example 2: parents from Mirpur visiting their son in Bradford
Muhammad, 63, and Rukhsana, 58, plan 10 weeks with their son, a British citizen. They use the Mirpur premium centre on a Monday. Their son's letter states who pays and where they will stay; he includes a copy of his British passport, recent payslips and bank statements. They add their own pension and rental income records, and translations of Urdu documents with the translator's details.
Example 3: textile exporter from Karachi, regular buyer meetings
Ayesha, 41, has visited the UK twice in four years for meetings with buyers. She applies for a 2-year long-term Standard Visitor visa for £506 at the Karachi centre, with business registration documents, recent invoices, business and personal bank statements and invitation letters from UK buyers. She knows UKVI may give a shorter visa if it is not satisfied.
