Short answer: UAE residents choose their UK route by passport, not residence. UAE nationals and holders of eligible passports apply online for a £20 ETA. Other expats apply for a Standard Visitor visa from £135, then give biometrics at VFS in Dubai or Abu Dhabi. A flight reservation for visa costs $15 per person.
Millions of people live in the UAE on residence visas while holding passports from India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Egypt, Nigeria, Europe, North America and dozens of other countries. When they plan a trip to London, Manchester or Edinburgh, the first question is not where they live but which passport they will travel on. That passport decides whether they need a UK visitor visa at all, or only an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA).
This guide is for UAE nationals and UAE residents planning short visits to the UK for tourism, family, business meetings or short courses. It explains the two routes, the Standard Visitor visa application from the UAE, fees in pounds, the two visa application centres, supporting documents for residents, processing and priority options, the TB test question, and how a flight reservation fits into the file.
Everything below is checked against GOV.UK, including the UK Visas and Immigration office pages for the centres in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Use the GOV.UK check-a-visa tool with your own nationality before you start, because the answer changes by passport.
Key facts: UK visit from the UAE
- Your passport decides the route; UAE residence alone does not exempt you from a visa.
- UAE nationals and holders of ETA-eligible passports apply online for an ETA: £20, usually decided within a day, up to 3 working days, valid 2 years or until the passport expires.
- Visa nationals (for example Indian, Pakistani, Filipino or Nigerian passports) apply for a Standard Visitor visa: £135 for up to 6 months.
- Apply online no earlier than 3 months before travel, then give biometrics at VFS Global in Dubai or Abu Dhabi.
- Standard decision usually within 3 weeks; priority (about 5 working days) and super priority (next working day) may be offered for an extra fee.
- Do not pay for travel until you have your decision; a reservation is enough for the file.
- BookForVisa flight and hotel reservations: a flat $15 per person each, real PNR on flights, valid 48-72 hours, free date changes on the booking day only.

Passport, Not Residence, Decides Your UK Route
The UK decides visit rules by nationality. A UAE residence visa or Emirates ID shows that you live lawfully in the UAE, which helps your application, but it does not change whether you need a visa. Two residents of the same Dubai building can follow completely different routes: one taps through an ETA on a phone, the other books a VFS biometrics appointment.
| Your passport | What you usually need for a short UK visit | Where you apply |
|---|---|---|
| UAE (Emirati) | ETA | Online or UK ETA app |
| Passports on the ETA list, such as EU countries, the US, Canada, Australia | ETA | Online or UK ETA app |
| Visa-national passports, such as India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Nigeria, Egypt | Standard Visitor visa | Online form, then VFS Dubai or Abu Dhabi |
| British or Irish | Neither | Not applicable |
This table is a guide only. The definitive answer for your passport is the GOV.UK check tool and the GOV.UK page on when you can get an ETA. Dual nationals should use the passport they will actually travel on, and the ETA or visa is linked to that passport.
Route 1: The UK ETA for Emiratis and Eligible Expats
If your passport is on the ETA list, you do not apply for a visitor visa for a normal short visit. You apply for an ETA online or in the UK ETA app. GOV.UK sets out the key points:
- It costs £20, and the fee is not returned once you apply.
- You need the passport you will travel with, an email address and a card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
- You upload or take a photo of your face that follows the digital photo rules.
- You usually get a decision by email within a day, but it can take up to 3 working days.
- The ETA lasts 2 years or until your passport expires, whichever is sooner, and covers multiple trips.
- You must wait for the email confirming the ETA before you travel.
An ETA allows visits of up to 6 months for tourism, family, certain business activities and other permitted visitor purposes. It is not a visa and does not need a VFS appointment, biometrics at a centre or a supporting-document file. If an application is rejected or you need to change details, GOV.UK says you apply again.
An ETA does not guarantee entry. At the UK border, officers can still ask about your plans, your funds and your return to the UAE, so carry your itinerary, accommodation details and proof of your return travel.
Route 2: The Standard Visitor Visa for Other Expats
If your passport is not on the ETA list, you apply for a Standard Visitor visa. It covers tourism, visiting family and friends, business meetings and conferences, study of up to 6 months, recreational courses of up to 30 days and some other permitted activities. You cannot work for a UK employer, live in the UK through frequent or successive visits, or claim public funds.
From the UAE the process is: fill in the online form on GOV.UK, pay the fee, book a biometrics appointment with VFS Global, attend the centre in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, upload or hand in supporting documents as instructed, then wait for the decision.
What the form asks UAE residents
GOV.UK says the form asks for your travel dates, where you will stay, how much the trip will cost, your current home address and how long you have lived there, your parents' details, your income and expenses, and your travel history for the last 10 years. For most UAE residents the home address is in the UAE, and the length of residence matters: a long, stable residence history is one of the clearest signs of your ties outside the UK.

UK Visitor Visa Fees for UAE Residents
Fees are the same wherever you apply and are paid in pounds online. GOV.UK lists:
| Visa or authorisation | Fee |
|---|---|
| ETA (eligible passports) | £20 |
| Standard Visitor visa, up to 6 months | £135 |
| Visitor visa for private medical treatment or academic visit, up to 11 months | £234 |
| Long-term visit visa, 2 years | £506 |
| Long-term visit visa, 5 years | £903 |
| Long-term visit visa, 10 years | £1,128 |
| Priority service (if offered) | £500 extra |
| Super priority service (if offered) | £1,000 extra |
VFS Global may charge for optional extras such as premium lounges, courier return or document scanning. These are optional; the UK Government fee and any priority fee are paid during the online application. Long-term visit visas still allow stays of up to 6 months per visit and are usually suited to people with a strong record of earlier UK visits.
Where to Give Biometrics in the UAE
UK visa applicants in the UAE give fingerprints and a photo at a VFS Global UK visa application centre. GOV.UK lists two:
- Abu Dhabi: Level B2 (Lower Ground), The Mall, World Trade Centre, Khalifa Bin Zayed The 1st Street (Airport Road), Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Get directions Details on the GOV.UK Abu Dhabi centre page.
- Dubai: the VFS Global Dubai centre page shows WAFI Mall, Level 1, Phase 5 - Horus, Umm Hurair 2, Dubai, UAE. Get directions GOV.UK's Dubai centre page still lists Wafi Mall, 3rd Floor, Falcon, Phase 2, Umm Hurair 2.
The two official pages give different floors and phases within Wafi Mall, and neither shows a revision date. We use the VFS address because VFS runs the centre day to day, but your appointment confirmation is the address that counts. Check it before you travel.
The British Embassy in Abu Dhabi and the consular office in Dubai do not take visa applications or biometrics. All visit visa appointments go through VFS Global. Book your slot through the link given at the end of your online GOV.UK application, not through social media pages or third-party agents.
Supporting Documents for UAE Residents
GOV.UK's guide to supporting documents for visiting the UK lists what can help. You need a current passport valid for the whole stay, and you should give evidence that you can support yourself and that you will leave the UK at the end of the visit. For a UAE resident, a practical file usually includes:
- Passport, plus any old passports with earlier UK, US, Schengen or other visas.
- UAE residence visa and Emirates ID, showing how long you have lived in the UAE.
- Salary certificate or employer letter with your role, salary, start date and approved leave.
- Bank statements for the last 6 months showing salary credits and normal spending.
- Tenancy contract (Ejari) or title deed for your UAE home, if you have one.
- Trade licence and company bank statements, if you own a business.
- Your planned itinerary and accommodation details; a flight reservation is optional but keeps your form dates consistent.
- For family visits, an invitation letter from your host with their UK status and address.
Documents not in English or Welsh need a full certified translation. Arabic salary certificates, tenancy contracts or trade licences should be translated by a qualified translator, with the translator's details and confirmation of accuracy.
Bank Statements: What Officers Look For
GOV.UK asks for financial documents that clearly show you have access to the funds, such as bank statements that show where the money came from, and proof of earnings such as an employer letter with your start date, salary, role and company contact details. For UAE residents, statements from a UAE bank showing monthly salary credits are usually the clearest evidence.
There is no fixed minimum balance for a visitor visa. Officers compare your income, savings and regular outgoings, such as rent, school fees and remittances home, with the cost of the trip you declare on the form. A balance that comfortably covers the trip after normal monthly spending is more convincing than a large one-off deposit.
If a recent deposit came from a bonus, end-of-service payment, property sale or a family transfer, add the supporting document and a one-line explanation. Unexplained funds are one of the most common reasons visitor applications are questioned.
Showing Ties to the UAE
The main question in a visitor visa decision is whether you are a genuine visitor who will leave at the end of the trip. Expats sometimes worry that, because they are not UAE nationals, their ties look weaker. In practice, officers look at your whole situation: stable residence, steady employment, a home, family with you in the UAE, and a sensible trip length.
| Situation | Evidence that helps |
|---|---|
| Salaried employee | Salary certificate, approved leave, 6 months of salary credits, residence visa sponsored by the employer. |
| Business owner or freelancer | Trade licence, company statements, VAT or free-zone documents, personal statements showing drawings. |
| Family with you in the UAE | Spouse and children's residence visas, school letters or fees, Ejari or deed. |
| Recently moved to the UAE | Short UAE history plus evidence of ties in your home country, previous travel and a short, clear trip. |
| Sponsored by a family member | Sponsor's letter, statements, relationship proof and their own residence status. |
A visa that expires soon after your trip is not a reason to be refused on its own, but make sure your UAE residence is valid for your planned return. If your residence visa is being renewed, include the renewal evidence.
How Long Does a UK Visa Take From the UAE?
GOV.UK's processing times page for applications outside the UK says you should usually get a decision on a visitor visa within 3 weeks of attending your appointment. It also warns not to book travel until you get your decision.
You can apply no earlier than 3 months before you travel. For peak periods such as summer and school holidays in the UAE, apply as soon as your dates are firm, because both VFS appointments and decisions can take longer.
Priority and super priority
The GOV.UK faster decision page lists priority at £500 for a decision within about 5 working days and super priority at £1,000 for a decision by the end of the next working day after biometrics, where offered. Availability depends on the centre and the visa; you will see what is offered when you apply. Faster services speed up the decision, not the outcome.
Do UAE Residents Need a TB Test for the UK?
You need a tuberculosis test only if you are coming to the UK for more than 6 months and have been living in a listed country for at least 6 months. The UAE is not on the GOV.UK TB test list, so a resident who has lived in the UAE for the past 6 months does not need a test for that reason.
Ordinary visits of up to 6 months do not need a TB test. If you recently moved to the UAE from a listed country such as India or Pakistan and plan a long stay, check the rule against where you have lived in the last 6 months.
Flight Reservations for a UK Visa From the UAE
The form asks for your travel dates and the cost of the trip, and GOV.UK tells applicants not to book travel until they have a decision. Be aware that the GOV.UK supporting-documents guide lists flight bookings (unless you are transiting) and hotel bookings among documents you do not need to provide as evidence. A reservation is therefore a planning tool: it fixes realistic dates for the form, shows the trip cost you declare, and gives you something verifiable if a decision maker asks for more information. Our guide to whether a flight ticket is required before UK visitor visa approval covers this in more detail.
- BookForVisa reservations cost a flat $15 per person and carry a real PNR that can be checked.
- Each reservation is valid for 48-72 hours, so time it close to submitting your form or attending VFS.
- Date changes are free on the booking day only.
- It can be issued even while you are at the visa centre.
- It works for visa applications and onward-travel proof.
If you use another provider, a dummy ticket should still be a verifiable reservation with dates that match your form, never an edited image. For accommodation, our hotel reservation for UK visitor visa article explains what to show.
Children and Family Applications From the UAE
Each family member needs their own ETA or visa, according to their own passport. A family with mixed nationalities, for example a European parent and children on another passport, can end up with one ETA and two visa applications for the same holiday.
For a child under 18 applying for a visa, the GOV.UK supporting-documents guide asks for a legal document showing the relationship to at least one parent or guardian, such as a birth certificate, and a copy of the photo page of a parent's or guardian's passport if they are not also applying. If the child has a different family name, a marriage or divorce certificate can help explain the link.
If a child travels without a parent
GOV.UK asks for a signed letter from a parent or guardian giving consent, saying who travels with the child (with that adult's passport number), who will look after the child in the UK and how the child will travel. It warns that an application may be refused without this. Attach the parent's UAE residence documents too, so the officer can see the child's home and family base.
If Someone Else Pays: Sponsors
Many UAE residents visit relatives in the UK who offer to cover accommodation or costs, and some trips are paid by an employer. GOV.UK says that when a sponsor provides your travel, maintenance or accommodation, you should show what support is given and how, that the sponsor has enough money to support themselves and their dependants, your relationship to the sponsor, and, if they are in the UK, that they are there legally.
Even with a sponsor, include your own UAE salary and residence evidence. It shows you have a life to return to, and officers look at your circumstances as a whole, not only who pays.
Previous Refusals and the ETA Route
GOV.UK notes that if you have previously been refused entry to the UK or have a criminal record, you may want to apply for a Standard Visitor visa even if your passport would normally qualify for an ETA. This is relevant for some Emiratis and Western expats in the UAE: an approved visa gives certainty before travel, rather than finding out at the ETA stage.
If you only pass through the UK on the way to another country, GOV.UK offers a separate Visitor in Transit visa for £74.50 for visa nationals, though a Standard Visitor visa also allows transit. Check the transit rules for your passport before booking a connection through London.
Visiting Family, Business Trips and Short Courses
Family and friends
If you are visiting relatives or friends, ask your host for a letter giving their name, address, immigration status in the UK, your relationship, the dates of the visit and who pays. Include a copy of their passport or residence document. If they will host you, their address replaces hotel bookings for those nights.
Business visitors
For meetings, conferences or negotiations, include a letter from your UAE employer confirming your role, the trip purpose and who pays, plus the invitation from the UK company or event. You must not do paid work for a UK client during a visitor trip.
Study and short courses
GOV.UK allows study of up to 6 months as a Standard Visitor, and recreational courses, such as a dance course, of up to 30 days. Include the acceptance letter from the course provider and proof of how the course is paid for.
After the Decision
If your Standard Visitor visa is approved, you receive a vignette in your passport or a digital status, depending on how your application was handled. Check the name, dates and number of entries straight away and report any error before travelling.
If you are refused, the letter explains the reasons. There is no appeal for most visitor refusals, but you can apply again with a stronger file that answers each point. Fix the actual weakness, such as unclear funds, a missing salary certificate or an unrealistic itinerary, rather than resubmitting the same documents.
ETA holders receive a 16-digit reference by email. The ETA is linked to the passport you applied with, so if you renew that passport you need a new ETA.

Common Mistakes UAE Residents Make
- Assuming residence means visa-free. The passport decides; check the GOV.UK tool.
- Applying for a visa when an ETA is enough, or the other way round.
- Applying too early. The form opens no earlier than 3 months before travel.
- Paying for travel before the decision. GOV.UK advises waiting.
- Going to the wrong Wafi Mall entrance. VFS and GOV.UK list different units; follow your appointment confirmation.
- Untranslated Arabic documents. Provide certified English translations.
- Unexplained large deposits shortly before applying.
- Dates that do not match across the form, leave letter, hotel and flight reservation.
Planning Timeline for UAE Residents
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| 3 to 4 months before | Check your route with the GOV.UK tool; confirm passport and residence validity. |
| About 3 months before | Visa route: submit the online form and pay; ETA route: you can apply nearer the date, but leave a few working days. |
| 2 to 3 months before | Collect salary certificate, statements, Ejari, translations and host letters; get a flight reservation for the form dates. |
| Appointment week | Attend VFS in Dubai or Abu Dhabi with documents in order. |
| After biometrics | Allow around 3 weeks, or use priority if offered; buy your full fare only after the decision. |
UAE school holidays, Eid periods and summer are the busiest times for UK applications from the Emirates. Starting early is the simplest way to avoid paying for priority.
How This Guide Differs From Home-Country Guides
Our guides for applying from India, Pakistan or Nigeria assume you live in that country and use the centres there. If you live in the UAE, you apply from the UAE, use the Dubai or Abu Dhabi centre, and show your UAE residence, job and home as your main ties. Your passport still decides whether you need a visa or an ETA, so read this guide with the GOV.UK check tool open.

Book your visa reservationFrequently Asked Questions
Do UAE residents need a visa to visit the UK?
It depends on your passport, not your residence. UAE nationals and holders of ETA-eligible passports such as EU, US or Canadian ones apply online for a £20 ETA. Expats with visa-national passports, such as Indian, Pakistani, Filipino or Nigerian ones, apply for a Standard Visitor visa and give biometrics at VFS.
Do Emiratis need a UK ETA?
Yes. UAE nationals visiting the UK for tourism, family, permitted business or study of up to 6 months apply for an ETA online or in the UK ETA app. It costs £20, usually takes a day, can take up to 3 working days, and lasts 2 years or until the passport expires.
Where do I apply for a UK visa in Dubai or Abu Dhabi?
Complete the Standard Visitor form on GOV.UK, then give biometrics at VFS Global. GOV.UK lists the Abu Dhabi centre at The Mall, World Trade Centre, VFS lists Dubai at WAFI Mall, Level 1, Phase 5 Horus, Umm Hurair 2, though GOV.UK shows another unit, so follow your appointment confirmation.
How much is a UK visitor visa from the UAE?
A Standard Visitor visa for up to 6 months costs £135. Long-term visit visas cost £506 for 2 years, £903 for 5 years and £1,128 for 10 years. Priority costs £500 extra and super priority £1,000 where offered. An ETA for eligible passports costs £20 and the fee is not returned.
How long does a UK visa take from the UAE?
GOV.UK says you should usually get a visitor visa decision within 3 weeks of your biometrics appointment. You can apply no earlier than 3 months before travel. Priority aims for about 5 working days and super priority for the next working day where offered. Do not pay for travel before your decision.
Do I need a flight ticket for a UK visa from the UAE?
No. GOV.UK advises not booking travel before a decision and says flight bookings are not needed as evidence unless transiting. A reservation helps set realistic form dates. A BookForVisa reservation costs $15 per person, has a real PNR, stays valid 48-72 hours and allows free date changes on the booking day only.
Do UAE residents need a TB test for a UK visa?
Usually not. A TB test is needed only for stays of more than 6 months after living at least 6 months in a listed country. The UAE is not on the GOV.UK list. If you moved to the UAE recently from a listed country such as India or Pakistan, check the rule for long stays.
Friendly reminder: BookForVisa prepares flight and hotel reservations to support visa applications and onward-travel proof. Requirements vary by destination, consulate, visa category and applicant situation. A reservation supports your file; it is not a paid ticket for travel and does not guarantee visa approval or entry.
