Short answer: UAE residents need a Schengen visa only if their passport requires one; Emiratis travel visa-free. Others apply to their main destination's provider in the UAE, usually VFS Global in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, 15 days to 6 months before travel. Adults pay €90. A flight reservation for visa costs $15 per person.
The UAE is one of the largest sources of Schengen applications in the Middle East, and most of them come from residents rather than citizens. An Indian engineer in Dubai, a Filipino nurse in Abu Dhabi and a Pakistani accountant in Sharjah all apply in the UAE because that is where they live, but each one needs a visa only because of the passport they hold. An Emirati neighbour planning the same trip to Paris does not need a visa at all.
This guide is for people who live in the UAE and want a short Schengen visit of up to 90 days. It explains who needs a visa, how to choose the right country, why your emirate can decide which centre you use, how fees and timing work, what UAE-specific documents consulates expect, and how the process differs between countries. We use two well-documented examples, Germany and the Netherlands, to show how local procedures differ while EU-wide rules stay the same. If you are also planning Britain, see our UK visa guide for UAE residents, because the UK is not part of Schengen.
Rules here come from the European Commission's Schengen visa overview, NetherlandsWorldwide's UAE application page and the German missions' Schengen visa page for the UAE. Every Schengen country publishes its own checklist, so always read the page of your main destination before you book.

- Fee: €90 adults, €45 children aged 6 to under 12, no fee under 6; service-provider charges are extra; Germany collects the fee in AED.
- Timing: no earlier than 6 months and at least 15 days before travel; EU normal processing is 15 calendar days (up to 45 if extended), and Germany says its UAE processing can take up to 15 days.
- Germany (country-specific rule) asks for a UAE residence permit valid at least 3 months beyond the visa or trip end; check your own destination's checklist.

Do UAE Residents Need a Schengen Visa?
It depends on your passport, not your residence. NetherlandsWorldwide states plainly that holders of an Emirati passport do not need a visa to visit the Netherlands, and the same visa-free rule applies across the Schengen area for short stays. Many expats in the UAE also hold passports that are visa-exempt for Schengen, such as those of the US, UK, Canada or Australia.
Residents holding passports that do need a Schengen visa, including India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Bangladesh, Nigeria and Egypt, must apply before travel. The European Commission keeps the official list of countries whose citizens need a visa on its Schengen visa page. A UAE residence visa, Golden Visa or Emirates ID does not by itself remove the visa requirement.
| Your situation | What you need for a short trip | Where you apply |
|---|---|---|
| Emirati passport | No Schengen visa; check current entry rules such as EES | Not applicable |
| Visa-exempt foreign passport (for example US, UK) | No Schengen visa | Not applicable |
| Visa-required passport, living in the UAE | Schengen short-stay visa | Main destination's provider in the UAE |
| Visa-required passport, visiting the UAE only | Schengen visa | Usually the country where you live |
If you are not sure where your passport falls, check the main destination's own visa-requirement page before you book an appointment.
The 29 Schengen Countries and the 90/180 Rule
The Schengen area currently has 29 countries listed by the European Commission: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. Cyprus and Ireland are EU members outside Schengen, with their own visa rules.
A Schengen short-stay visa allows up to 90 days in any 180-day period. It can be single-entry or multiple-entry, and an airport transit visa is a separate category. The visa issued may be shorter than you asked for, so always plan to the dates on the sticker, not the dates on your form.
Choosing the Right Country From the UAE
The European Commission sets the rule for every member state: apply to the country you will visit. If you visit more than one, apply to the country where you will spend the longest time. If stays are equal, apply to the country you enter first. Our guide to choosing your main Schengen destination works through examples.
This matters more in the UAE than in many places, because appointment availability varies sharply between countries in peak seasons. Picking a country for its appointment calendar rather than your real plan is a common reason for refusal. Build the itinerary first, then apply to the country it points to.
Applying from the UAE as a resident
The general rule is that you apply at the consulate responsible for the country where you are legally resident. For Dutch Schengen visas only, NetherlandsWorldwide says the VFS centres in Abu Dhabi and Dubai accept applicants who live in the UAE or in Afghanistan; other Schengen countries set their own rules on who may apply in the UAE. Germany says responsibility follows your current main place of residence in the UAE. If you are only visiting the UAE, apply in your home country instead.
Where to Apply: VFS Global in Dubai and Abu Dhabi
Most Schengen countries collect applications in the UAE through an external service provider. Germany and the Netherlands both use VFS Global, with centres in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The service provider takes your documents, fingerprints and fees; the consulate makes the decision.
Germany: your emirate decides the centre
The German missions say the Consulate General in Dubai processes and decides every German Schengen application in the UAE, but submission follows residence:
- Residents of Dubai and the Northern Emirates submit at VFS Global in Dubai.
- Residents of Abu Dhabi and Al Ain submit at VFS Global in Abu Dhabi.
- Appointments are split into Short Stay (tourism and family visits) and Business; book the correct category.
- Spouses of German or EU citizens and parents of minor German or EU citizens living in the UAE may walk in without an appointment.
The VFS Germany Dubai page gives this address:
Visa Application Centre, Wafi Mall, First Floor, Phase 5 - Horus, Umm Hurrair 2, Dubai, UAE Get directions
VFS lists a German service fee of AED 146.74 and submissions Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 15:00. Always follow the address and time on your booking confirmation.
Netherlands: either centre
NetherlandsWorldwide tells UAE residents to apply at the VFS Global centre in Abu Dhabi or Dubai, after completing the online form. Book your own appointment on the VFS Netherlands UAE site, one per person, and avoid intermediaries. Companies registered for the Dutch Orange Carpet Visa Facility can use a simplified route for their staff.
VFS publishes these Netherlands centre addresses:
- Dubai (VFS Netherlands Dubai): Visa Application Centre, Wafi Mall, First Floor, Phase 5 - Horus, Umm Hurrair 2, Dubai, UAE Get directions
- Abu Dhabi (VFS Netherlands Abu Dhabi): Joint Visa Application Centre, Level B2 (Lower Ground), The Mall, World Trade Centre, Khalifa Bin Zayed The 1st Street, Abu Dhabi, UAE Get directions
VFS lists a Netherlands service fee of AED 102.67 at both centres, payable in cash or by card, and Dubai submissions Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 15:00. Germany and the Netherlands share the same Wafi Mall centre address in Dubai.
Other countries may use different providers or appointment rules. Treat Germany and the Netherlands as examples, and follow your own destination's page.
Schengen Visa Fees for UAE Residents
The visa fee is set at EU level and is the same for most nationalities:
| Applicant | Visa fee |
|---|---|
| Adult (12 and over) | €90 |
| Child aged 6 to 11 (under 12) | €45 |
| Child under 6 | No fee |
| Service provider charge | Extra, set by the provider |
The European Commission lists €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6 to 12, and NetherlandsWorldwide lists no visa fee for children under 6. Some nationalities and categories pay less or nothing under EU agreements and waivers, so check your destination's fee page.
How you pay depends on the country. Germany says regular visa fees in the UAE are paid in UAE dirham at the consulate's current exchange rate, and its tourism leaflet says fees are paid in cash in AED at submission; the VFS service fee stays with VFS. The Netherlands publishes its UAE consular fees; payment options there refer to the consulate, while the VFS service fee is paid at the centre. The visa fee is not returned if the visa is refused.
When to Apply and How Long It Takes
You can apply no earlier than 6 months before your trip and must apply at least 15 days before it. Seafarers on the Dutch route can apply up to 9 months ahead. The European Commission gives an EU-wide normal processing time of 15 calendar days under the Visa Code, which can be extended to up to 45 days if more detailed examination or extra documents are needed. Germany states that its UAE processing can take up to 15 days.
Processing time does not include the wait for an appointment. In the UAE, summer and the winter holiday season are heavy periods, so book your appointment as soon as your plan is firm.
| Step | Typical timing |
|---|---|
| Earliest application | 6 months before travel |
| Latest application | 15 days before travel |
| EU-wide normal processing (Visa Code) | 15 calendar days, up to 45 if extended |
| Germany processing (UAE) | Up to 15 days |
| Passport return | After the decision, by collection or courier |
Documents UAE Residents Need
The EU-wide core documents are a valid passport, an application form, an ICAO-standard photo, medical insurance and supporting documents on purpose, money, accommodation and return. Germany's UAE tourism leaflet turns that into a detailed checklist that is a useful model for any country:
- Application form completed in English or German, signed and dated; both parents sign for a minor.
- Passport issued within the last 10 years, valid at least 3 months beyond the visa, signed, with at least two blank visa pages; previous passports if available.
- Valid UAE residence permit, valid at least 3 months after the visa ends or the trip ends.
- Two recent biometric photos, 35 x 45 mm, white background, taken within 6 months.
- Copies: passport data and signature pages, UAE residence permit, and earlier Schengen visas.
- Travel medical insurance valid for all Schengen states and the whole visa, at least €30,000, including repatriation; Germany does not accept credit-card insurance.
- Itinerary: a hotel or accommodation booking with full address and booking reference, and a flight reservation.
- A letter from your UAE employer or sponsor (NOL) with your position, start date, salary, approved leave and travel purpose; investors add the trade licence.
- Personal bank statements for at least the last 3 months and other proof of means.
Germany also warns that false or falsified documents, including fake bookings, lead to refusal. Whatever you submit must be genuine and verifiable.

UAE-Specific Proof: Residence, Job and Money
Consulates in the UAE see many applicants on employment-based residence visas, so they look closely at three things: whether your residence is stable, whether you have a job or business to return to, and whether your money is your own.
| Your situation | Evidence that usually helps |
|---|---|
| Salaried employee | NOL letter with salary, start date and approved leave; 3 months or more of salary credits; residence permit valid well past the trip. |
| Business owner or investor | Trade licence, company and personal statements, and proof of your role in the company. |
| Dependent on a spouse or parent | Sponsor's letter, passport and residence permit copies, proof of relationship, sponsor's statements. |
| Golden Visa holder | Residence permit, proof of income or assets and evidence of ties in the UAE. |
| Recently arrived in the UAE | Short UAE history, so add strong home-country ties and earlier travel. |
If your residence permit is due to expire soon after your trip, renew it before applying where possible. Germany's rule of at least 3 months beyond the end of the visa is easy to miss and is a frequent reason files are returned.
Travelling With Children From the UAE
Children need their own application. Germany asks, for minors under 18, for proof of parenthood such as a birth certificate, adoption papers, custody decree or death certificate of a parent, translated into German or English, plus a letter of consent from both parents with passport copies and valid UAE residence visa copies. Both parents sign the application form.
NetherlandsWorldwide notes that children under 12 do not give fingerprints but must still attend the appointment, and that there is no visa fee for children under 6.
Business Trips, Trade Fairs and Conferences
Many UAE residents travel to Europe for trade fairs, client meetings and conferences. Germany books these under a separate Business appointment category for work-related travel connected to your profession, and its UAE page publishes a separate business, trade fair and congress checklist. Use that list, not the tourism one, if business is the main purpose.
A business file usually adds an invitation from the European company or event organiser, a letter from your UAE employer explaining the trip and who pays, and, for owners, the trade licence. Keep the dates on the invitation, the employer letter, the form and your flight reservation identical. If you combine business with a few days of tourism, the main purpose is still business, and the main destination is still where you spend the longest time.
Family Members of EU Citizens
If you are the spouse of a German or other EU citizen, or the parent of a minor German or EU citizen, and you live in the UAE, Germany says you may walk in to a VFS centre without a prior appointment. The European Commission notes that family members of EU or EEA citizens covered by the Free Movement Directive can qualify for a free and accelerated procedure.
Bring proof of the family relationship, such as a marriage or birth certificate, and the EU citizen's passport copy. Germany publishes a dedicated checklist for visits with an EU or German spouse, parent or child. NetherlandsWorldwide also has a separate checklist for family members of EU, EEA or Swiss citizens.
Travel Medical Insurance Explained
Medical insurance is an EU-wide requirement, but consulates set the details. Germany's UAE leaflet asks for a policy valid for all Schengen states for the whole period of the visa, with at least €30,000 of cover including repatriation, and it states the conditions must appear on the policy or a separate confirmation letter.
Germany does not accept the travel insurance that comes with credit cards for this purpose. Buy a stand-alone policy whose dates cover your full trip, including any extra days you might spend in another Schengen country, and print the certificate. For a multiple-entry visa, Germany also publishes a separate declaration on travel and health insurance.
Combining Schengen With the UK or Other Trips
The UK, Ireland and Cyprus are not part of the Schengen area, so a Schengen visa does not cover them. If you plan London and Paris on one holiday, you need a UK visit visa or ETA as well as your Schengen visa, depending on your passport.
Apply for each separately and make sure the dates fit together. Your Schengen form should show only the Schengen part of the trip as the stay, with the UK leg shown as the onward or previous journey. A clear itinerary that explains the full route helps both consulates understand the plan.
Flight Reservations for a Schengen Visa From the UAE
Germany's UAE leaflet lists a flight reservation as part of the travel itinerary. It does not ask you to buy a full fare before the decision. What it does demand is that bookings are genuine, since fake bookings lead to refusal.
- BookForVisa reservations cost a flat $15 per person and carry a real PNR that can be checked.
- Each reservation is valid for 48-72 hours, so time it close to your VFS appointment.
- Date changes are free on the booking day only.
- It can be issued even while you are at the visa centre.
- It works for visa applications and onward-travel proof.
If you use another provider, a dummy ticket should still be a verifiable reservation that matches your form, never an edited image. For accommodation, our guide to hotel itineraries for Schengen visas explains the formats consulates expect.
At the VFS Appointment
NetherlandsWorldwide describes the appointment in five steps, which match most Schengen centres: hand in your passport and checklist documents, give fingerprints, answer questions about the trip, pay the fees, and choose whether to collect your passport or have it sent. You receive a reference number to track the file.
Fingerprints are stored in the Visa Information System. NetherlandsWorldwide explains that if you gave fingerprints for a Schengen application in the last 59 months, you may not need to give them again, but you should check the current rule for your destination.
For the Dutch route, complete your own online form so it carries a unique code; forms without it can cause processing problems. For Germany, fill in the online VIDEX form and check every entry before printing.
After the Decision
The Netherlands sends an email when the file is processed, without saying whether the visa was approved. Your passport comes back by collection or courier, with the visa affixed if granted. Someone else can collect it with your signed authorisation, valid ID and the VFS payment receipt.
Check the visa straight away: name, passport number, validity dates, number of entries and days allowed. If the validity does not match your travel dates, contact the consulate before you travel. If you are refused, the letter states why and explains how to challenge the decision in that country.
At the border: EES, and the status of ETIAS
The EU Entry/Exit System records non-EU travellers' entries and exits digitally, with fingerprints and a facial image, instead of passport stamps. The German missions note that it changes border procedures, not entry requirements. The EU's ETIAS page says ETIAS was not in operation as of 7 November 2026, no applications are being collected, and its start will be announced months in advance.

Common Mistakes UAE Residents Make
- Assuming residence removes the visa need. Your passport decides.
- Choosing a country for its appointment slots rather than the main destination.
- Using the wrong emirate centre for Germany.
- A residence permit that expires too soon after the trip.
- Credit-card travel insurance where the consulate does not accept it.
- Using someone else's form instead of your own online form with its unique code.
- Paying intermediaries for appointments. Book directly with the provider.
- Bookings that are not genuine. Germany refuses files with fake bookings.
Planning Timeline for UAE Residents
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| 5 to 6 months before | Check whether your passport needs a visa; fix the itinerary and main destination; check residence permit validity. |
| 4 to 5 months before | Book the VFS appointment for the right country and emirate centre. |
| 1 to 2 months before | Collect NOL letter, statements, insurance, translations and children's papers. |
| Appointment week | Get a flight reservation and hotel bookings that match the form; print the checklist. |
| After submission | Allow up to about 15 days, plus courier time; buy the full fare after the visa is issued. |
Apply no earlier than 6 months and no later than 15 days before travel, whichever plan you follow.
How This Guide Differs From Home-Country Guides
Our Schengen guides for Nigeria, the Philippines and Pakistan assume you live in those countries and use their centres. If you live in the UAE, you apply here, under UAE jurisdiction rules, showing UAE residence and employment as your main ties. The EU-wide rules on fees, timing and the 90/180 limit are the same, but the centre, payment currency and local checklists change.

Book your visa reservationFrequently Asked Questions
Do UAE residents need a Schengen visa?
It depends on the passport. Emirati citizens and holders of visa-exempt passports such as American or British ones visit Schengen countries without a visa for short stays. Residents with visa-required passports, including Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Bangladeshi or Egyptian ones, must apply for a Schengen short-stay visa before they travel.
Where do UAE residents apply for a Schengen visa?
Apply in the UAE to the country of your main destination, usually through its service provider. Germany and the Netherlands both use VFS Global in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. For Germany, Dubai and Northern Emirates residents use Dubai, while Abu Dhabi and Al Ain residents use the Abu Dhabi centre.
How much is a Schengen visa from the UAE?
The visa fee is €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6 to under 12, with no visa fee for children under 6. The service provider adds its own charge. Germany collects the visa fee in UAE dirham at its exchange rate, and the fee is not returned after refusal.
How early should I apply for a Schengen visa in the UAE?
Apply no earlier than 6 months and at least 15 days before travel. EU normal processing is 15 calendar days and can be extended to 45 days if the consulate needs more documents. Appointment waits are not included, so book early before summer and winter holidays, when demand in the UAE peaks.
Does my UAE residence permit need to be valid after the trip?
Yes, for Germany it does. The German missions ask for a valid UAE residence permit that remains valid at least three months beyond the end of the requested visa or the end of the journey. This is a German rule, so check your own destination country's checklist and renew early if needed.
Do I need a flight ticket for a Schengen visa from the UAE?
No paid ticket is required before the decision. Germany asks for a flight reservation in the itinerary and refuses fake bookings, so use a verifiable reservation. A BookForVisa reservation costs $15 per person, has a real PNR, stays valid 48-72 hours and allows free date changes on the booking day.
Do Emiratis need anything to visit Europe?
Emiratis do not need a Schengen visa for short stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. They pass through the EU Entry/Exit System, which records entries and exits digitally with fingerprints and a photo. The separate ETIAS system was not yet in operation as of 7 November 2026.
Friendly reminder: BookForVisa prepares flight and hotel reservations to support visa applications and onward-travel proof. Requirements vary by destination, consulate, visa category and applicant situation. A reservation supports your file; it is not a paid ticket for travel and does not guarantee visa approval or entry.
