How to Apply for a UK Visitor Visa From Bangladesh

How to Apply for a UK Visitor Visa From Bangladesh

Short answer: To apply for a UK visitor visa from Bangladesh, complete the Standard Visitor application online up to 3 months before travel and pay £135. Then attend your VFS Global appointment in Dhaka or Sylhet, or the premium Chattogram centre, for fingerprints, a photo and documents. A flight reservation for visa costs $15.

Bangladeshi passport holders need a visa to visit the UK. Bangladesh is on the visa national list in the Immigration Rules, so as a rule Bangladeshi nationals need a visa rather than the electronic travel authorisation many other nationalities use; the rules set out limited exceptions. For a holiday, a family visit, permitted business or a short course, the visa is the Standard Visitor visa, and you apply before you travel.

The process has two halves. You apply and pay online with UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI), and book an appointment as part of that application. Then you attend a visa application centre to prove your identity, give fingerprints and a photo, and provide your documents. In Bangladesh VFS Global runs centres in Dhaka and Sylhet, plus a premium centre in Chattogram that opens on selected Thursdays. The British High Commission in Dhaka is not where you hand in a visitor visa.

This guide is written for applicants living in Bangladesh. It is different from our UK visa from Pakistan guide, which covers Pakistan's centres and clinics, and it goes beyond our note on whether a flight ticket is needed before approval. Facts come from GOV.UK pages checked on 8 November 2026, especially Apply for a Standard Visitor visa and the Home Office guide to supporting documents. Confirm details there before you pay.

Key facts: UK visitor visa from Bangladesh

  • Visa: Standard Visitor visa, for tourism, seeing family or friends, permitted business and courses up to 6 months. Bangladesh is on the visa national list, so an ETA is not the normal route.
  • Where you apply: online with UKVI, no earlier than 3 months before you travel. You book a centre appointment as part of the application.
  • Mandatory fee: £135 for up to 6 months. Long-term visas cost £506 (2 years), £903 (5 years) and £1,128 (10 years), with up to 6 months per visit.
  • Optional fees: priority (£500, decision usually within 5 working days) or super priority (£1,000, usually by the end of the next working day), only if offered in your live application, which is not confirmed for Bangladesh; VFS add-on services.
  • Centres: VFS Global in Dhaka and Sylhet (Sunday to Thursday, 08:30 to 15:00), plus a premium centre in Chattogram on selected Thursdays at an extra £80.
  • Visa format: VFS Bangladesh's July 2026 update says successful applicants now receive digital status instead of a vignette, viewed in a UKVI account before travel, with exceptions such as Crown Dependencies applications.
  • Decision: GOV.UK says usually within 3 weeks of your appointment.
  • Evidence: the Home Office says hotel and flight bookings are less useful as evidence, except for transit. Focus on funds, ties and purpose.
  • BookForVisa flight and hotel reservations: $15 per person each, real PNR on flights, valid 48-72 hours, free date changes on the booking day only.

Filling in the online form? UKVI asks for the dates you plan to travel and where you will stay. A verifiable reservation helps you settle those dates without paying a full fare before the decision.

Official-source check: Bangladesh's visa national status comes from Appendix Visitor: Visa national list. Permitted activities and eligibility come from Visit the UK as a Standard Visitor; fees, timing, the appointment, eVisa and decision times from Apply for a Standard Visitor visa. Evidence advice comes from the Home Office guide to supporting documents. Faster decisions come from Get a faster decision, and TB rules from Tuberculosis tests for visa applicants. Centre addresses, hours and surcharges come from the VFS Global Dhaka, Sylhet and Chittagong centre pages, and the digital status change from VFS's digital immigration update. Do Bangladeshis Need a Visa for the UK?

Yes. The visa national list in Appendix Visitor of the Immigration Rules includes Bangladesh, which means Bangladeshi nationals must get a visa before travelling to the UK as a visitor.

The Standard Visitor visa usually allows a stay of up to 6 months. You can visit for tourism, see family or friends, volunteer for up to 30 days with a registered charity, pass through the UK in transit, do certain business activities such as meetings or interviews, take a recreational course of up to 30 days, or study for up to 6 months. You cannot work for a UK company, claim public funds, live in the UK through frequent or successive visits, or marry; marriage needs a Marriage Visitor visa.

What you must be able to show

GOV.UK says you must show that you will leave the UK at the end of your visit, that you can support yourself and any dependants during the trip, and that you can pay for your return or onward journey, or that someone else will fund these. Your passport must be valid for the whole of your stay.

If you only change planes in the UK

If transiting is your only reason for coming, GOV.UK says you can apply for a Visitor in Transit visa for £74.50 instead. Check the transit rules for your route before you book.

Where Do You Apply for a UK Visitor Visa From Bangladesh?

GOV.UK's application page says you must apply online before you travel and attend an appointment at a visa application centre. The earliest you can apply is 3 months before you travel. You can save the form and come back to it later.

If family members travel with you, each person needs their own application and fee, and each attends their own appointment. You can apply on behalf of your partner and child if they cannot apply for themselves.

GOV.UK says that if you do not choose a visa application centre when you apply, one will be chosen for you, normally the one most accessible to where you live. Pick the centre that is easiest for you to reach.

GOV.UK warns that the application fee is not returned if your application is refused, or if you are given a shorter long-term visa than you asked for. A long-term visa still limits each stay to 6 months, and UKVI may issue a shorter visa if it believes you cannot meet the requirements for the full period. If you are under 18, a long-term visa only lasts until 6 months after you turn 18.

Priority and super priority are not available to everyone. GOV.UK says you will be told whether they are available when you apply; we could not confirm that they are offered in Bangladesh, so treat them as possible, not guaranteed. Where used, the timing starts from the day of your appointment.

Where Are the UK Visa Application Centres in Bangladesh?

Bangladesh is listed on GOV.UK's Find a visa application centre service, and the UK centres there are run by VFS Global. Book your appointment from your online application, then use the details in your appointment confirmation.

Dhaka

VFS Bangladesh Pvt Ltd, Nafi Tower, 7th Floor, 53 Gulshan Avenue, Gulshan-1, Dhaka-1212, Bangladesh. Get directions. Open Sunday to Thursday, 08:30 to 15:00, per the VFS Dhaka centre page.

Sylhet

VFS Bangladesh Pvt Ltd, Merchant Tower, Level 3, East Mira Bazar, Sylhet-3100, Bangladesh. Get directions. Open Sunday to Thursday, 08:30 to 15:00. The VFS Sylhet centre page says an additional £76.50 applies, paid after booking and before your visit.

Chattogram (premium centre)

Chittagong Peninsula Premium Application Centre, The Peninsula Chittagong, 486/B, CDA Avenue, O.R. Nizam Road, Bulbul Center, Chittagong-4100, Bangladesh. Get directions. The VFS Chittagong page says it opens on selected Thursdays only, 09:00 to 15:00, costs an extra £80, and does not give a faster decision.

Check the VFS Global UK Bangladesh site and your appointment confirmation before you travel, as days and services can change.

What happens at the appointment

  • Bring your appointment confirmation with its QR code and your passport.
  • You prove your identity, and your fingerprints and a photo are taken. VFS says children under 5 have a photo only, with no fingerprints, and children under 16 must come with an adult.
  • You provide the documents that show you are eligible. VFS says you can upload them yourself or pay for assistance.

What Does the Online Form Ask?

GOV.UK lists the information you will need. Gather it before you start, because answers must match your documents.

  • The dates you plan to travel to the UK.
  • Where you will stay during the visit.
  • How much you think the trip will cost.
  • Your home address and how long you have lived there.
  • Your parents' names and dates of birth, if known.
  • Your annual income, if you have one.
  • Any criminal, civil or immigration offences.

Depending on your situation you may also need your travel history for the past 10 years, your employer's address and phone number, your partner's name, date of birth and passport number, the name and address of anyone paying for your trip, and the name, address and passport number of family members in the UK.

What Documents Do You Need for a UK Visitor Visa From Bangladesh?

The Home Office guide to supporting documents says you need to show that you are a genuine visitor: you are coming for a permitted activity, you will leave at the end of the visit, and you can support yourself and pay for your return. It says presenting any listed document does not guarantee success, and the list is not exhaustive.

Useful evidence

  • Passport: valid, with previous passports showing travel to other countries.
  • Funds: bank statements that show where the money came from, or proof of earnings such as an employer letter with start date, salary, role and company contact details.
  • Work: a letter from your employer on company headed paper, giving your role, salary and length of employment.
  • Business: business registration documents or recent invoices if you are self-employed, such as a trade licence.
  • Study: a letter on headed paper from your education provider confirming enrolment and leave.
  • Purpose: invitation letters from people or organisations you will visit, and who is paying.

Documents the Home Office says are less useful

The same guide lists documents that are less useful as evidence: bank statements or letters issued more than a year before you apply, credit card statements, driving licences, unrelated educational certificates, car ownership papers, personal photos, notarial certificates, business cards, hotel bookings, flight bookings unless transiting, photocopies of bank cards, leisure certificates, travel insurance, and a sponsor's utility or council tax bills.

Leaving these out keeps your file focused. Put the effort into funds, employment and family ties instead.

How Do You Prove Funds, Purpose and Ties to Bangladesh?

Funds

The Home Office asks for financial documents that clearly show you have access to the money and where it came from. A steady salary credit is clearer than a large deposit made just before you apply. If you hold savings in a fixed deposit, include the bank certificate and explain it. If your income is in cash or from a family business, add the business documents and a short explanation.

Purpose

Explain what you will do, where you will stay and for how long. If you are visiting family, give their names and address in the UK and how you are related. Make sure the dates in your letter, form and any reservation agree.

Ties

Show what brings you back: your job and approved leave, your business, your studies, property and family responsibilities in Bangladesh. If you are not a Bangladeshi national, the Home Office asks for proof of your legal residence in Bangladesh.

What If Someone in the UK Is Supporting You?

If a sponsor is paying for travel, maintenance or accommodation, the Home Office says you should show what support they are giving and whether it covers dependants, how it is being provided, that they have enough money to support themselves and their own dependants as well, your relationship to them, and that they are legally in the UK, such as a British passport or residence document.

A sponsor letter is stronger with the sponsor's bank statements, proof of their address and status, and a clear statement of where you will stay. A sponsor's utility and council tax bills are on the Home Office list of less useful documents, so they do not replace financial evidence.

How Should You Translate Bangla Documents?

Any document not in English or Welsh must come with a full translation that the Home Office can independently verify. Each translation must contain the translator's confirmation that it is accurate, the date of translation, the translator's full name and signature, and the translator's contact details.

Common documents needing translation in Bangladesh include birth and marriage certificates in Bangla, land records, and some trade licences or bank letters. The Home Office also says digital images should be taken of original documents, not copies, wherever possible.

What About Children, TB Tests and Longer Visits?

Children

A child should show a document linking them to at least one parent or guardian, such as a birth certificate, and a copy of the photo page of at least one parent's passport if that parent is not also applying. A child not travelling with a parent or guardian needs a signed letter from the parent or guardian confirming the travel arrangements and giving permission; the application may be refused without it.

TB test

GOV.UK says you need a tuberculosis test if you are coming to the UK for 6 months or more, have lived in a listed country for 6 months or more, and were living there in the last 6 months. A standard visit of up to 6 months does not need one. If you are applying for a longer medical or academic visitor visa, check the list and use a Home Office approved clinic.

How Do Real Bangladeshi Applications Look?

These examples apply the published GOV.UK and Home Office guidance to common situations. They show how to build a file, not what the decision will be.

A bank officer in Dhaka visiting her brother in Birmingham

She applies online for the £135 visa, books the Dhaka centre and uploads six months of salary statements, an employer letter on headed paper confirming her role, salary, length of service and approved leave, and an invitation from her brother with a copy of his British passport photo page. Because her brother is hosting her, she includes his address and a short note on how they are related.

A retired couple in Sylhet visiting their son in London

Each spouse makes their own application and pays their own fee, and each attends the Sylhet centre. With no employer letter, their ties come from pension or bank records, property papers and family in Bangladesh. Their son writes a sponsor letter and adds his bank statements and proof of his status, because the Home Office asks that a sponsor show they can support themselves as well.

A garment exporter in Chattogram attending meetings

Business meetings are a permitted activity. He includes his trade licence and company registration, recent invoices, the invitation from the UK buyer setting out the meeting dates, and who is paying for the trip. He does not plan any work for the UK company, which would fall outside the rules.

A student visiting during university holidays

She adds a letter on headed paper from her university confirming her enrolment and the holiday dates, plus a parent's letter and bank statements if her parents are paying. Bangla documents, such as a parent's land record, go in with full translations including the translator's details.

What Are the Steps From Online Form to Decision?

  1. Check your purpose against the permitted activities.
  2. Choose the visa length: £135 for up to 6 months, or a long-term visa.
  3. Start the online application up to 3 months before travel.
  4. Complete the form with dates and costs that match your documents.
  5. Pay the fee and any optional priority service.
  6. Book your appointment in Dhaka, Sylhet or Chattogram.
  7. Attend with your QR appointment confirmation, passport and documents.
  8. Wait for the email with your decision, usually within 3 weeks.
  9. If approved, follow the decision email; under current guidance you view your digital status in a UKVI account.
  10. Book your flight once your visa is confirmed.

What Happens After the Decision?

GOV.UK says you will get an email when the Home Office has decided. GOV.UK says successful applicants get an eVisa, a digital record of identity and immigration status, accessed by creating a UKVI account, confirming identity and linking the account; it is usually available straight away but can take up to 24 hours. VFS Bangladesh's July 2026 update says digital status replaces vignettes and should be viewed before travel, with exceptions such as Crown Dependencies applications, which receive an emailed notification instead. Follow whatever your decision email says.

If you need to change something after you have applied, contact UKVI. You may ask to withdraw the application, but GOV.UK says the fee is only returned if the application has not yet been processed.

At the UK border you may still be asked about your visit, so carry the key documents from your file, such as your return travel plans and where you are staying.

Do You Need a Flight or Hotel Reservation for a UK Visa?

Be clear about this: the Home Office guide lists hotel bookings and flight bookings, unless transiting, as less useful evidence for a visit visa. It also warns applicants to bear in mind that a visa is not guaranteed when making any bookings. So a reservation is not what wins a UK visa, and you should not buy a full fare before the decision.

What the online form does ask for is the dates you plan to travel, where you will stay and what the trip will cost. A reservation helps you fix realistic dates and prices for those answers. See our guide on hotel reservations for UK visitor visas for accommodation options.

If you want a reservation, a BookForVisa reservation offers:

  • A flat $15 per person for a flight reservation, and $15 per person for a hotel reservation.
  • A real PNR you can check on the airline's own site.
  • Valid 48-72 hours.
  • Free date changes on the booking day only.
  • It can be issued even while you are at the visa centre.

If you use another provider, a dummy ticket should still be a genuine, verifiable reservation. Never submit a fake document.

What Mistakes Do Bangladeshi Applicants Often Make?

  • Applying too early. The earliest is 3 months before travel.
  • Going to the High Commission. Visitor applications go online and to a VFS centre.
  • Old bank statements. The Home Office says statements over a year old are less useful.
  • Unexplained deposits. Show where funds came from.
  • Untranslated Bangla documents, or translations without the translator's details.
  • Padding the file with photos, insurance and bookings instead of funds and ties.
  • Dates that do not match across the form, letters and reservation.
  • Paying for flights before the decision.

How Is This Guide Different From Other UK Guides?

Our Pakistan and Nigeria UK guides cover those countries' centres, clinics and documents. From Bangladesh, the essentials are visa national status, online application up to 3 months ahead, VFS centres in Dhaka and Sylhet plus the Thursday premium centre in Chattogram, Bangla translations with translator details, and a clear focus on funds and ties rather than bookings.

What Is the Final Checklist for a UK Visitor Visa From Bangladesh?

  1. Confirm the Standard Visitor visa fits your purpose.
  2. Gather passport, funds, employment and ties documents.
  3. Translate Bangla documents with full translator details.
  4. Apply online and pay £135, plus any optional service.
  5. Book and attend your VFS appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I submit a UK visitor visa at the British High Commission in Dhaka?

No. GOV.UK says you apply online before you travel and then attend an appointment at a visa application centre. In Bangladesh, VFS Global runs centres in Dhaka and Sylhet, plus a premium centre in Chattogram on selected Thursdays. There you prove your identity, give fingerprints and a photo, and provide documents.

How much is a UK visitor visa from Bangladesh?

GOV.UK lists £135 for a Standard Visitor visa of up to 6 months, which is mandatory. Long-term visas cost £506, £903 or £1,128 for 2, 5 or 10 years. Priority at £500 and super priority at £1,000 are optional, only if offered. The fee is not returned if the application is refused.

Can Bangladeshis use a UK ETA instead of a visa?

Generally no. Bangladesh is on the visa national list in Appendix Visitor of the Immigration Rules, so Bangladeshi nationals normally need a visitor visa before travelling. The rules contain limited exceptions, and an electronic travel authorisation is meant for non-visa nationals. Use the GOV.UK visa checker for your own case.

How long does a UK visa take from Bangladesh?

GOV.UK says you usually get a decision within 3 weeks after applying online, proving your identity and providing documents. Where offered in your application, priority usually gives a decision within 5 working days and super priority by the end of the next working day. Neither guarantees approval, and complex cases can take longer.

Do I need a flight booking for a UK visitor visa?

No. The Home Office lists flight bookings, unless transiting, and hotel bookings as less useful evidence. The form still asks your travel dates and costs. A BookForVisa flight reservation costs $15 per person, has a real PNR, stays valid 48-72 hours and allows free date changes on the booking day only.

Do Bangla documents need translation for a UK visa?

Yes. Any document not in English or Welsh needs a full translation the Home Office can verify. It must include the translator's confirmation of accuracy, the translation date, the translator's full name and signature, and contact details. Birth certificates, land records and some bank letters in Bangla commonly need this before you upload them.

What happens after a UK visa is approved from Bangladesh?

You receive an email with the decision. Under current GOV.UK and VFS guidance, successful applicants get digital status, an eVisa, instead of a vignette, viewed in a UKVI account before travel. Some cases, such as Crown Dependencies applications, are handled differently. Always follow the exact instructions in your decision email.

Friendly reminder: BookForVisa prepares flight and hotel reservations to support visa applications and onward-travel proof. Requirements vary by destination, consulate, visa category and applicant situation. A reservation supports your file; it is not a paid ticket for travel and does not guarantee visa approval or entry.
