Hotel Reservation for a Türkiye Visa: Which Route Needs One?

Hotel Reservation for a Türkiye Visa: Which Route Needs One?

Short answer: Only some routes ask for one. Türkiye’s standard e-Visa is issued online after you enter identity, passport and travel details and pay the fee. The conditional e-Visa, for nationalities eligible only if they hold a valid Schengen, US, UK or Irish visa or residence permit, comes with criteria that Turkish missions list as a return ticket, a hotel reservation and at least USD 50 per day of stay, with entry by air. Sticker visas from a Turkish mission follow that mission’s checklist. Check your nationality’s entry, then match any hotel reservation to your flight reservation for visa and your passport validity.

Türkiye uses three visa routes for short visits, and the hotel question has a different answer for each. Many nationalities are visa-exempt. Others get a standard e-Visa in minutes. A third group can use the e-Visa only if they meet extra conditions, and a fourth must apply at a Turkish mission. A hotel reservation is a formal condition only in some of these cases.

This guide explains the routes, what the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Turkish missions say about hotel reservations, the passport-validity rule that catches travellers out, and how to align your hotel, flights and visa dates. Check the official e-Visa site for your nationality before you apply.

Key facts

  • The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says the e-Visa is valid only for tourism or commerce; work and study visas come from Turkish missions.
  • Turkish mission guidance lists the conditional e-Visa criteria: a valid Schengen, US, UK or Irish visa or residence permit, a return ticket, a hotel reservation, at least USD 50 per day, tourism or business travel and entry by air.
  • Foreigners entering Türkiye need a passport valid at least 60 days beyond the duration of stay of their visa, e-Visa, exemption or residence permit.
  • The official e-Visa site warns that information on an e-Visa cannot be changed after processing and must match the travel document exactly.
  • Many nationalities are visa-exempt for up to 90 days in 180; check your nationality’s entry on the ministry page.
  • The Turkish Embassy in New Delhi’s e-Visa note says the Turkish e-Visa is equivalent to the sticker visa issued at Turkish missions, and warns against fake e-Visa websites.
  • Türkiye’s MFA says the e-Visa is valid only when the purpose of travel is tourism or commerce; visas for other purposes such as work and study are issued by Turkish embassies or consulates.
  • The MFA says e-Visa fees on evisa.gov.tr are lower than fees for visas obtained on arrival at Turkish airports, and that tour operators may apply for group e-Visas.

Official-source check: The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs visa information for foreigners gives each nationality’s visa regime and the 60-day passport rule. The Turkish Consulate General’s e-Visa note lists the conditional e-Visa criteria, including the hotel reservation. The official e-Visa information page explains validity, fees and data accuracy. Apply only on evisa.gov.tr.

Does a Türkiye Visa Require a Hotel Reservation?

Does a Türkiye Visa Require a Hotel Reservation?

There is no single answer because there are several routes. The ministry describes the e-Visa as something applicants obtain after filling in identity, passport and travel-date information and paying the fee online. For many nationalities that is all the e-Visa step involves. No hotel upload is asked for.

For other nationalities the ministry entry says that ordinary passport holders need a visa but may get a single-entry e-Visa if they hold a valid Schengen, US, UK or Irish visa or residence permit, "provided that they meet certain conditions". Turkish missions spell those conditions out: hold such a visa or permit, prove a return ticket, a hotel reservation and at least USD 50 for each day of stay, travel for tourism or business, and enter through an airport rather than a land border.

Check first: Find your nationality on the ministry’s page. It tells you whether you are exempt, eligible for an e-Visa, eligible only conditionally, or need a mission visa. That one line decides whether a hotel reservation is a formal condition.

What Does the Conditional e-Visa Require in Practice?

The conditional e-Visa applies to nationalities such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and the Philippines, according to the ministry’s entries. The conditions are checked at the border as well as at application, so carry the evidence when you fly.

  • A valid supporting visa or residence permit from a Schengen country, the USA, the UK or Ireland, valid on the date you enter Türkiye.

  • A return ticket.

  • A hotel reservation covering your stay.

  • At least USD 50 for each day of your stay, in cash, cards or statements.

  • Travel for tourism or business.

  • Arrival at an airport.

The Turkish Consulate General in Los Angeles says Turkish immigration officers can only recognise valid sticker US, Schengen or Irish visas or Green Cards. The Turkish Embassy in New Delhi’s e-Visa note and the e-Visa site’s Turkish-language FAQ both say e-Visas of other countries are not accepted as supporting documents, and that a used or unused supporting visa counts only if its validity covers your entry date. If your US, UK or Schengen permission is electronic only, you are not eligible on that basis.

A BookForVisa hotel reservation for visa costs $15 per person, shows the hotel, address and nights you choose and allows free date changes within the same day of booking.

How Do You Match the Hotel to the e-Visa Dates?

How Do You Match the Hotel to the e-Visa Dates?

The e-Visa site makes two points that shape your hotel booking. The e-Visa’s validity period is different from the duration of stay, and you may enter at any time within the validity period. And once processed, none of the information on the e-Visa can be changed.

  1. Choose your arrival date and confirm it falls inside the e-Visa validity period.

  2. Set hotel check-in for the arrival date and check-out for the departure date.

  3. Check that the number of nights does not exceed the permitted duration of stay.

  4. Make sure the return flight leaves on or before the last permitted day.

  5. Calculate funds at USD 50 per day for the conditional e-Visa.

If you need a return flight record, our flight reservations carry a PNR valid for 48-72 hours; issue it close to when you need to show it. Our guide to whether a Türkiye e-Visa needs a flight reservation covers the flight side.

What Is the 60-Day Passport Rule?

The ministry explains that, under Article 7.1b of Law No. 6458 on Foreigners and International Protection, in force since 1 January 2015, foreigners must carry a passport with an expiry date at least 60 days beyond the duration of stay of their visa, e-Visa, visa exemption or residence permit. Its own example: with a visa allowing a 90-day stay, the passport must be valid for at least 150 days. Citizens of countries on the ministry’s linked list are exempt from this article.

Permitted stay

Passport must be valid for at least

Planning consequence

30 days (e.g. a 30-day e-Visa)

90 days from entry

Renew before applying if close

One month (single-entry e-Visa)

About three months from entry

Check the passport expiry before booking hotels

90 days (visa exemption)

150 days from entry

Common trap for long-stay travellers

The rule is tied to the duration of stay your visa or exemption allows, not to the length of your hotel booking. A short hotel stay does not shorten the passport validity you need. If your passport is close to the limit, renew it first; the e-Visa must then be issued on the new passport, because e-Visa details cannot be changed after processing.

What About Sticker Visas From a Turkish Mission?

If your nationality is not eligible for an e-Visa, or you travel for a purpose the e-Visa does not cover, you apply to a Turkish embassy or consulate. Missions publish their own document lists. Many include travel and accommodation details for tourist visas. Follow the list of the mission where you apply, and keep the hotel dates aligned with the dates you give on the form.

Nigerian ordinary passport holders, for example, are listed by the ministry as requiring a visa, with no e-Visa option mentioned for them.

What Do Two Example Trips Look Like?

An Indian traveller with a valid US visa

Vikram holds a valid US B1/B2 sticker. He plans five nights in Istanbul and two in Cappadocia, arriving by air. He applies for the conditional e-Visa, carries his US visa, a return flight, hotel reservations for all seven nights and card statements showing more than USD 350.

A Canadian tourist

The ministry lists Canadian ordinary passport holders as exempt for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. No hotel reservation is part of any application. She carries her hotel details for arrival, as any traveller would.

What Mistakes Cause Problems at the Turkish Border?

  • Using an electronic US, UK or Schengen authorisation as the supporting document for a conditional e-Visa.

  • Arriving by land on a conditional e-Visa.

  • Carrying too little money for USD 50 per day.

  • Hotel nights that extend beyond the permitted stay.

  • Applying on a look-alike website; the official site warns that third-party sites are not endorsed by the government.

  • Typos in the e-Visa that do not match the passport; the official site says such an e-Visa is invalid.

Our guide to accommodation documents embassies accept covers the general format points.

Which Route Applies to Common Nationalities?

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs page lists each nationality’s regime. The table below summarises the entries for ordinary passport holders from countries our readers ask about, as published on the ministry’s page at the time of writing. Entries change, so check your own line before you book anything.

Note the special cases in the ministry’s wording. Egyptian nationals under 15 or over 45 may obtain an e-Visa without additional conditions, while those aged 15 to 45 can get a 30-day single-entry e-Visa only if they hold a valid Schengen, US, UK or Irish visa or residence permit and travel with Turkish Airlines, AJet, Pegasus, Egypt Air or Air Cairo. UK passport holders with British National Overseas, British Subject or British Protected Person nationality are subject to visa and can only get visas from Turkish missions.

How Do You Avoid Fake e-Visa Websites?

The Turkish Embassy in New Delhi’s e-Visa note is blunt: the official website is www.evisa.gov.tr, and apart from it all other websites claiming to provide e-Visas are fake. It says such sites get the e-Visa from the official site and charge more than twice the official fee, and that if you applied through one by mistake you should check the validity of your e-Visa at the official status page.

  1. Type evisa.gov.tr yourself instead of following an advert or search result.

  2. Apply for each traveller separately, with details exactly as in each passport.

  3. Pay only on the official site.

  4. If someone else applied for you, check the e-Visa at the official status page before you travel.

  5. Keep the e-Visa PDF with your hotel and flight records.

The same note says the Turkish e-Visa is equivalent to the sticker visa issued at Turkish missions, and that if you are eligible for an e-Visa you do not need to submit biometrics. It is only valid when the purpose of travel is tourism or commerce.

What Should a Hotel Record for Türkiye Show?

Whether your route lists a hotel reservation as a condition or a mission asks for it in a checklist, the record works best when it answers the questions a Turkish officer or airline agent would ask on the spot.

Field

Why it matters for Türkiye

Tip

Guest name

Must match the passport and the e-Visa exactly

Use the spelling in the machine-readable zone

Hotel name and full address

Lets the officer see where you will be

Include the city, e.g. Istanbul or Nevşehir

Check-in and check-out dates

Must fall inside the e-Visa validity and the permitted stay

Match the return ticket dates

Number of nights

Feeds the USD 50 per day funds calculation on the conditional route

Count nights, not calendar dates

Booking reference

Lets the hotel or officer confirm it

Keep the PDF, not a screenshot

For multi-city trips, one record per city in date order is clearer than one booking with notes. Istanbul, Cappadocia and the Aegean coast are common combinations; each stretch should have its own record.

How Do Conditional e-Visa Funds Relate to Hotel Nights?

Turkish mission guidance lists at least USD 50 for each day of your stay among the conditional e-Visa criteria. The number of days you show in your hotel records and return ticket sets the total you need to be able to show.

Length of stay

Minimum at USD 50 per day

Records that set the length

10 days

14 nights plus travel day

USD 750 for 15 days

Count the days you are in Türkiye, not just hotel nights

The guidance does not say exactly what form the money must take beyond being able to prove it, so carry more than one form of evidence: a bank card, a recent statement and some cash. If your hotel is prepaid, keep the receipt too; it shows that part of the cost is already covered.

What Do Airlines Check Before Flying You to Türkiye?

Airlines carry the risk of flying you to a country that refuses you, and Turkish mission guidance says airlines and Turkish immigration check supporting documents and that airlines will not accept a passenger on board if the supporting document does not meet the criteria.

  • A passport valid for at least 60 days beyond your permitted stay, unless your nationality is exempt from that rule.

  • An e-Visa, sticker visa or visa-exempt nationality for your passport.

  • For the conditional e-Visa, the original supporting visa or residence permit, valid on your entry date.

  • A return ticket, a hotel reservation and evidence of USD 50 per day on the conditional route.

  • Entry by air on the conditional route, not by land.

If you hold a supporting visa in an old passport, mission guidance says to register the e-Visa on your current passport and carry the old passport too. Show both at check-in if asked.

What Do Three More Türkiye Trips Look Like?

A Mexican traveller on an e-Visa for ten days

She obtains a 30-day single-entry e-Visa online. The standard e-Visa form does not ask for a hotel reservation, but she carries hotel records for Istanbul and Antalya and her return flight, because her airline may ask and the border officer can.

An Egyptian engineer aged 32 on a business visit

Because he is between 15 and 45, the ministry entry limits him to a 30-day e-Visa that needs a valid Schengen, US, UK or Irish visa or residence permit and a flight with one of the listed airlines. He holds a valid UK visitor visa sticker and books Egypt Air. He carries the sticker in his passport, a return ticket, a hotel reservation for six nights and statements showing more than USD 350.

A South African family on a three-week holiday

A one-month single-entry e-Visa covers a three-week stay, so they apply online and carry hotel records and return flights for the border. If they wanted to leave and re-enter Türkiye during a longer trip, the ministry entry points them to a three-month multiple-entry visa from a Turkish mission instead, and that mission’s checklist would decide what accommodation evidence to attach.

What If Your Plans Change After the e-Visa Is Issued?

The official e-Visa site says the information on an e-Visa cannot be changed once processed, and that the validity period of an e-Visa is different from the duration of stay: you may enter at any time within the validity period, and the stay you are allowed runs from entry. That gives you some room to move hotel dates without touching the e-Visa.

On the conditional route, a change of dates also changes the funds you need at USD 50 per day and must keep your supporting visa valid on the new entry date. Re-check both after any change.

Is the e-Visa the Right Visa for Your Purpose?

Türkiye’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs says the e-Visa is only valid when the purpose of travel is tourism or commerce. For other purposes, such as work and study, visas are issued by Turkish embassies or consulates. The MFA also says people planning to shoot a documentary, conduct research or carry out an archaeological excavation need special permission from the Turkish authorities in advance.

A hotel reservation helps with tourism and commerce visits. It does not turn an e-Visa into permission for any other purpose.

What Does a Work or Long-Stay Visa Involve?

For work, the MFA says you apply at the nearest Turkish mission for a work permit and visa, with your passport, the application form and a letter from your employer. The employer submits further documents to the Ministry of Labour and Social Security within ten working days of your application, and the ministry finalises applications within thirty days at the latest. After arrival, and before starting work, you must register with the local police within one month to obtain the residence permit.

The MFA says that with a valid visa you do not need a residence permit for stays of up to 90 days, but foreigners who will reside, work or study in Türkiye should register with the nearest police department on arrival, regardless of the validity of their visa.

How Do e-Visa Fees and Group Applications Work?

The MFA says fees for e-Visas obtained on evisa.gov.tr are lower than for visas obtained on arrival at Turkish airports, and that fee amounts are published on the ministry’s website. It also says tour operators may apply for group e-Visas and pay a lump sum, and that arrangements are being made so visitors can obtain e-Visas at authorised airline offices, including at airports.

  1. Check whether your nationality needs a visa at all on the MFA’s country list.

  2. Apply on evisa.gov.tr before you fly, rather than at the airport, to pay the lower fee.

  3. If you travel with a tour operator, ask whether it will file a group e-Visa.

  4. Make sure the hotel reservation covers the dates you enter on the e-Visa application.

  5. Carry a passport valid at least 60 days beyond the visa’s duration of stay; the MFA separately advises 6 months from arrival.

Note: The MFA’s visa fee table is the only official source for current fees. Do not rely on a figure quoted by a third-party site.

Which Official Pages Does This Guide Draw On?

Match the Hotel to the Route, Not to a Rumour

For Türkiye, a hotel reservation is a stated condition of the conditional e-Visa and a common item on mission checklists, but not part of the standard e-Visa application. Find your nationality’s route on the ministry’s page, then match your hotel nights to the e-Visa’s permitted stay, your return flight and the funds rule.

For multi-city trips, see our guide to structuring a multi-city itinerary.

Check your nationality’s route first. If it is the conditional e-Visa or a mission visa, issue a hotel reservation that covers exactly the nights of your stay.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a hotel reservation for a Türkiye e-Visa?

Not for the standard e-Visa application. For the conditional e-Visa, Turkish missions list a hotel reservation among the criteria.

What are the conditional e-Visa criteria?

A valid Schengen, US, UK or Irish visa or residence permit, a return ticket, a hotel reservation, at least USD 50 per day, tourism or business travel and entry by air.

How much money do I need for a conditional e-Visa?

At least USD 50 for each day of your stay, according to Turkish mission guidance.

Can I enter Türkiye by land on a conditional e-Visa?

No. Turkish missions say the conditional e-Visa applies to entry via airports, not land border checkpoints.

How long must my passport be valid for Türkiye?

At least 60 days beyond the duration of stay of your visa, e-Visa or exemption, unless your nationality is exempt from this rule.

Can I correct a mistake on my e-Visa?

No. The official site says e-Visa information cannot be changed after processing; you must apply again with correct details.

Can I change my hotel after getting a Türkiye e-Visa?

Yes. The e-Visa does not name a hotel. Keep your stay within the e-Visa validity and permitted duration, and carry the new hotel record.

Does a renewed passport need a new Türkiye e-Visa?

Yes. The official site says e-Visa details cannot be changed after processing, so an e-Visa issued on an old passport number does not transfer.

Is the Turkish e-Visa the same as a sticker visa?

The Turkish Embassy in New Delhi’s e-Visa note says the e-Visa is equivalent to the sticker visa issued at Turkish missions. It is valid only for tourism or commerce.

Which websites can issue a Turkish e-Visa?

Only evisa.gov.tr. The Turkish Embassy in New Delhi’s note says other sites claiming to provide e-Visas are fake and charge more than the official fee.

Do Egyptians need a supporting visa for a Türkiye e-Visa?

The ministry says Egyptians under 15 or over 45 can get an e-Visa without additional conditions; those aged 15 to 45 need a valid Schengen, US, UK or Irish visa or permit and must fly with one of the listed airlines.

Can I work in Türkiye on an e-Visa?

No. The MFA says the e-Visa is valid only for tourism or commerce; work requires a work permit and visa from a Turkish mission.

Is it cheaper to get a Turkish visa online or on arrival?

The MFA says e-Visa fees on evisa.gov.tr are lower than for visas obtained on arrival at Turkish airports.

Friendly reminder: BookForVisa provides travel-proof documents for planning and visa-application support. Requirements vary by destination, consulate, visa category and applicant situation. A flight reservation can support a file, but it does not guarantee approval, boarding or entry.
