Short answer: For a Stipendium Hungaricum award, funding starts only after you register at the university and sign the Scholarship Agreement, and you must arrive by 30 September. Fix one arrival date first. If the consulate lists a flight booking for visa files, a real PNR reservation costs $15 per person, valid 48-72 hours.
To align the funding period and arrival for a Hungary scholarship award, fix one arrival date and make every document agree with it.
Funding activates only after you register at the university and sign the Scholarship Agreement, so the official funding dates and your first payment are different things. Autumn intakes require arrival and registration by September 30, and visa delays can push you past it.
Key facts on Stipendium Hungaricum dates
- Bachelor's and master's holders receive HUF 43,700 a month for 12 months a year, plus a dormitory place or HUF 40,000 a month towards rent; PhD holders receive HUF 140,000, then HUF 180,000.
- Holders must get the visa, arrive and register by 30 September for autumn programmes, or an earlier date the university sets.
- Tell your university coordinator your arrival date 30, and no fewer than 15, days before you land.
- The D visa is single entry, valid 3 months from approval, for a stay of up to 30 days; no travel allowance is paid.
- BookForVisa flight and hotel reservations: a flat $15 per person, real PNR on flights, valid 48-72 hours, free date changes on the booking day only, and they can be issued while you are at the embassy or visa centre.

What Exactly Has to Line Up Between Your Award and Your Arrival?

Three clocks run under one award, and trouble starts when they disagree. The award clock follows the academic year. The immigration clock follows your visa and permit. The funding clock follows your registration at the host institution. A date that works on one clock can quietly break another.
The award clock belongs to the scholarship programme, which the Tempus Public Foundation runs for the Hungarian government. Hungary's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade sits behind it, and each partner country joins through a bilateral cooperation agreement. International students who join as Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship holders receive a fully funded package:
- Tuition: 100% of tuition fees are covered.
- Monthly stipend: HUF 43,700 for bachelor's and master's students, and HUF 140,000 to HUF 180,000 for PhD students.
- Housing: accommodation in a free dormitory space, or a housing allowance of HUF 40,000, which the terms describe as an accommodation contribution.
- Health cover: full Hungarian medical insurance.
That financial support only starts working once you are physically in Hungary and registered. The immigration clock belongs to the Hungarian authorities: a D-visa is single-entry and valid for 3 months, and the permit it leads to cannot outlast your passport. Both rules matter again in the field table later in this guide.
The funding clock is the one students tend to miss. The scholarship requires you to coordinate arrival and registration timelines. Students must arrive in Hungary and register by September 30 for autumn intakes. Visa processing delays can leave you short of that registration deadline, and the Call allows the host institution to set its own earlier date, and a student who arrives late without a formal postponement may lose scholarship eligibility.
The first days are also not free. Under Act CCIV of 2011 on National Higher Education, students from abroad undergo a compulsory medical examination in Hungary, and the university organises it for new holders. Add that appointment to the same arrival date rather than treating it as an afterthought.
Tempus also runs other scholarship programmes with their own calendars, so none of the dates here transfer to them without checking.
Where Do the Award Dates Come From Before You Book Anything?
Every date in your arrival plan traces back to the application, so the chain starts earlier than most people expect.
The 2026/27 Call set its deadline at 15 January 2026, 2 p.m. Central European Time, with nomination by 28 February, entrance exams from March to May, results by July and arrival by 30 September. If the 2027/28 cycle follows the same pattern, expect an application window from November 2026 to mid-January 2027. There is only one application deadline in each cycle, and a missed deadline means waiting a year.
The date to trust is the one printed in the official Stipendium Hungaricum Call when it is published.
Partner organizations may set earlier internal deadlines, so contact your Sending Partner first. Treat the Tempus deadline as the outer limit and your partner's date as the real one.
You apply through the Stipendium portal, filling in the online application form. Decide how many programmes you list before anything else, because you can apply for a maximum of 2. The one that finally admits you becomes the study programme your documents name. Whether it sits in engineering or natural sciences, the university sets its own tests and registration week.
Applicants must be nominated by their country's partner organization, and for some countries nominations by partner organizations are required. Only nominated applicants move on to the entrance exams, held from March to May 2027. The nomination process runs through the responsible authorities in your country, and a country with fewer applicants still follows the same cycle.
Eligibility has its own limits. Applicants must fulfil the specific requirements set by their country, and the Sending Partner for India publishes its own marks and document rules, so read its current notice before you apply. Language evidence follows the host programme's admission rules, and some universities accept a previous degree taught in English in place of a test.
The application process is the first draft of your arrival plan.
The portal asks for application materials such as a motivation letter, a research plan for doctoral students, official transcripts, a high school diploma or degree certificate, and language and school certificates.
The required documents differ by study level and by country. Some uploads follow a mandatory template, and a passport copy goes in too. A medical certificate belongs to the nominated stage.
Those same papers return later at the consulate. Keep names, dates, and the programme title identical everywhere, because a mismatch found at the visa stage is slower to repair than one caught during the selection process.
Which Fields Carry the Dates, and Who Reads Them?
Ten fields decide whether your funding period and arrival agree. Each one sits with a different reader, so a date can look correct in your own notes and still conflict where it counts. The table below shows where each date lives, what it must agree with, and the publisher of the rule.
Read the table from the arrival row outward. Four rows are tied to that single date by name: the notice, the flight, the insurance, and the accommodation. Students must inform their host university 15 to 30 days before arrival. If any of them use a different date, the file is internally inconsistent before an officer looks at it.
The D-visa row deserves a second look. Approval at a consulate counts as approval of an entry visa, and the approval lapses if you do not enter Hungary within 3 months.
The visa allows one entry and a stay of up to 30 days, and the residence permit is then collected after arrival. Arrive too early, and the stay clock starts sooner; arrive too late, and the window closes.
The permit row carries a quieter limit. A study permit is issued for at least 1 year or the course length if shorter, up to 3 years, and never beyond the validity of your travel document. The Embassy of Hungary in New Delhi also asks that your passport stay valid for at least three months after the authorised stay ends.
Two scope notes keep the table honest. The permit route applies to third-country nationals, so Hungarian citizens, EEA nationals, and their family members sit outside it, and anyone who holds Hungarian citizenship should ask the university which route applies.
The application goes to a Hungarian mission in the country of your nationality or where you habitually reside. The legal framework for the permit comes from aliens policing rules, while the scholarship terms come from the Call, and neither overrides the other.
Other missions word the same fields differently. The Embassy of Hungary in Tehran, for example, lists insurance valid for at least 30 days and accommodation for the whole stay, with a dormitory confirmation or hotel reservation acceptable. Use the list for your own mission, not a neighbour's.
Which Required Documents Must Agree Before the Consulate Sees Them?
Indian applicants file with the Hungarian embassy in New Delhi, which publishes a list of the documents required from award holders, separate from the general student list. It opens with a warning that missing or inappropriate documents may lead to refusal, and it adds that the decision belongs to the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing, not the embassy.
Some items on that list carry a date, and those are the ones to line up first:
- A letter of acceptance from the Hungarian higher education institution, and the letter of award from Tempus.
- A flight booking arranged close to the start date of your studies.
- Travel insurance valid from your travel date, which the university probably provides, so confirm that with your coordinator.
- Proof of accommodation, which the university may provide as a hostel, so confirm that too.
Other items carry facts rather than dates but still have to match the same story. Original academic certificates need an apostille for Indian citizens, and the list asks for sponsor income and relationship proof, a birth certificate, a bank statement, a police clearance certificate, and one set of copies.
The mission accepts only original documents. There is no visa fee for award holders.
Checklist versions from the same embassy do not always match. One names a three-month bank statement window, while another asks for a sponsor statement covering six months and a scholarship payment certificate as an alternative. Download the version the embassy currently links, and treat the older one as history.
Other items on the longer form are worth reading closely. Expect the application form with Appendix 9.13, a valid passport with at least two blank pages, previous passports, a signed declaration such as a voluntary exit statement, and a signed letter of motivation in English.
Where a country lists a national ID card, treat it like the passport data page: spelling and dates must be identical.
The embassy may request additional documents, so keep a spare copy set.
When a list item is a reservation or booking, confirm with the mission whether it wants an issued ticket or accepts a reservation. Some award holders search for a dummy ticket at this point; what the New Delhi list asks for is a flight booking arranged close to the start of studies, and a verifiable reservation meets that request. A BookForVisa reservation costs a flat $15 per person, carries a real PNR, stays valid for 48-72 hours, allows free date changes on the booking day only, and can be issued even while you are at the embassy or visa centre. It is for visa applications and immigration onward proof only, not a paid fare.
How scholarship files handle travel evidence in general, including who pays for the journey, is covered in our guide to a scholarship flight reservation for visa files. Stipendium Hungaricum provides no travel allowance, so the fare is yours to plan.
How Does One Example Case Work Out Date by Date?

Daniel Foster lives in Mumbai and has been nominated for a master's degree in computer science at a Hungarian university. The case is fictional, and the university name and its dates are invented for the illustration. His 2027/28 award letter and acceptance letter have arrived, and he has just drafted his dates.
His draft looks tidy but disagrees with itself. He booked the cheapest flight, landing on 21 September, kept a dormitory start of 1 September, set insurance from 15 September, and planned to email his coordinator on 10 September once the flight was confirmed. His D-visa was approved on 12 July.
Notice how the correction works. Daniel chose one anchor, 4 September, and moved every other date to it. The notice window follows by arithmetic: 30 days before 4 September is 5 August, and 15 days before is 20 August. He now has a registration buffer of 26 days.
The visa math improves too. The 30-day stay runs to about 4 October, which leaves room to collect the permit. With the flight pinned, he asks the university whether its own registration week begins before 4 September, since a university calendar can be earlier than the national deadline.
The cash line is the least obvious correction. This guide plans for the first payment 6 to 8 weeks after arrival, a working assumption rather than a published rule, which puts his first payment between 16 and 30 October. Eight weeks is the planning figure, so his reserve must cover food, transport, and the first month of study materials until then.
Now suppose the visa slips, and he collects it only on 2 September. An arrival on 4 September becomes unrealistic, so he moves the anchor to 12 September and changes every dependent date again: flight, insurance, dormitory, and a corrected notice to the coordinator sent at once.
That still leaves 18 days before 30 September, and his first payment now falls between 24 October and 7 November. One anchor makes the second change a short exercise instead of a rebuild.
Daniel did not need a cheaper flight; he needed a flight that fit the paperwork.
If the cheaper fare had been the only option, the honest fix was to ask the coordinator in writing whether a 21 September arrival could still be accommodated, not to hope nobody noticed.
When Does the Monthly Stipend Actually Start, and What Should You Hold in Reserve?
Funding activation occurs after successful university registration and signing of the Scholarship Agreement. Neither step happens at the airport. Both happen at the university, in a registration period the coordinator announces, usually by email, so a student who lands on time but misses that window can still see payments slip.
The official funding dates may differ from the first payment date because of processing times. Treat the funding start as an entitlement and the first payment as a bank event. Tempus says the monthly stipend and accommodation contribution are arranged between the holder and the university, so ask your coordinator for its payment calendar. This guide uses 6 to 8 weeks after arrival as a planning assumption, and some universities then pay on a fixed day each month, with earlier months paid retrospectively.
So coordinate your first scholarship payment with the visa and registration processes, not with the flight alone. Ask your coordinator which payment run your registration date falls before, and what the cut-off for that run is. A registration finished just after a cut-off can push the first payment into the next run.
Accommodation arrangements must be synchronized with the official funding start date.
A dormitory place that starts before funding means rent without a stipend, while one that starts after leaves you in a short-term rental. The cash alternative applies only if you arrange private housing, and a lease or dormitory confirmation that covers your arrival date has to cover your study period too.
Students must have financial reserves to cover initial living expenses before stipend disbursement. Plan for the whole gap, not the first week. Use institutional sources, such as the university's international office pages, for the exact registration week and the teaching period start.
Funding continues only with satisfactory academic progress.
Holders on a Hungarian language course must attend it or receive no stipend.
Under the Operational Regulations, the host institution may end scholarship status if the student does not earn at least 18 credits on the average of the last two semesters in which student status was not suspended. Supplementary health insurance of up to HUF 65,000 per person per year sits on top of the standard cover.
What Should You Correct, and Whom Should You Ask?
Work through the steps in order, because each answer feeds the next. Stop at the first step you cannot complete and ask the named party, not a friend or a forum.
- Ask your nominating body for its internal deadlines. Contact that body for any date earlier than the Tempus close, and for how it will tell you about the result.
- Get the registration week in writing. Ask the university coordinator for the registration period, the Scholarship Agreement signing day, and the medical examination slot.
- Choose one arrival date. Pick it from the registration week, not from fares, then check that it falls inside the D-visa entry window and well before September 30.
- Move the dependent dates. Flight, insurance start, accommodation start, and the notice to the coordinator all take the arrival date. The notice goes 15 to 30 days before arrival.
- Check each required document against the embassy's current list. Look for the version your mission links today, and for missing documents before you book an appointment.
- Request a formal postponement early, if you need one. It is only possible in unforeseeable force majeure cases, with special approval, and a late arrival without one may cost eligibility.
- Book a first-month plan. Keep the first weeks free of conference-related or family trips, and match your cash reserve to the 6 to 8 weeks this guide plans before the first stipend.
A good enquiry to the coordinator is short and specific. Give your name and award reference, the arrival date and landing time, the accommodation start you expect, and the date your visa is due.
Then ask three things: the registration period, the signing day for the Scholarship Agreement, and whether the university needs anything else before you fly. Keep the reply, because it becomes your evidence if a date is later disputed.
Some questions need the right owner. The consulate answers on document formats, appointment channels, and what it accepts as a flight booking. The aliens policing directorate answers on permit validity and decisions. The university answers on registration, the Scholarship Agreement, and housing. Tempus answers on the award itself.
This guide stops at the date alignment. It does not cover tourist visas, onward-ticket rules at borders, or general visa timing, and it cannot replace your own award letter and the current embassy list.
Which Stipendium Hungaricum Questions Come Up Once Dates Are Fixed?
Can Arrival Move to the Next Semester?
In principle, the start of the scholarship cannot be postponed to another semester or year. The exception is unforeseeable force majeure, which needs written proof, the university's approval, the nominating body's approval, and special approval from Tempus. Students who have already arrived and enrolled cannot request a postponement.
What If the Visa Arrives After the Registration Date?
Tell the coordinator immediately and in writing, with the visa status and your new arrival date. Visa processing delays can affect the registration deadline, so the earlier the university knows, the more options it has. Our note on visa timelines for flight proof shows when the consulate reads travel evidence, which helps you decide when to order a new reservation.
Does an Extension Change Any of These Dates?
Holders of full-time bachelor's and master's programmes may extend by two semesters, requested through the university. Partial studies and doctoral programmes are not eligible, and no stipend or accommodation payment is made during an extension.
Do Other Awards Follow the Same Timeline?
No. Each award has its own call and calendar, so reuse the method here but not the dates.
Where Do These Stipendium Hungaricum Dates and Rules Come From?
The rules above draw on the following sources, checked on 3 November 2026. Dates, amounts and document lists change by cycle and mission, so confirm each against the current version before you rely on it.

- Tempus Public Foundation: information for scholarship holders, for postponement, extension by two semesters, the 18-credit rule and the Hungarian language course.

Why Fix One Arrival Date and Build Everything Around It?
For a Hungary scholarship award, the funding period only matters once you are registered and the Scholarship Agreement is signed. Choose the arrival date from the university's registration week, keep it inside the D-visa window and the September 30 deadline, and move the flight, insurance, accommodation, and coordinator notice to match.
Carry reserves for the 6 to 8 weeks this guide plans before the first stipend, and keep the Delhi embassy list open while you finalise the file. If your date is still moving, order any flight reservation close to the appointment so it follows the plan rather than leads it.
Arrival date fixed and the coordinator told? Match the date on your visa file with a flight reservation that carries a real PNR, for a flat $15 per person, valid 48-72 hours.
Create your $15 flight reservationFrequently Asked Questions
When does the Stipendium Hungaricum stipend start?
Funding activates after you register at the host university and sign the Scholarship Agreement, not when you land. Tempus says payments are arranged between the holder and the university, so ask your coordinator for the payment calendar. This guide plans for the first payment 6 to 8 weeks after arrival and suggests a cash reserve for that gap.
What is the latest arrival date for a Stipendium Hungaricum award?
The 2026/27 Call says holders must obtain the visa, arrive in Hungary and register at the host institution by 30 September for autumn programmes, or by an earlier date the institution sets. Arriving late without an approved postponement can cost the award, so check your own university's registration week first.
How early must I tell my university when I will arrive?
The Call asks holders to inform their host institution's Stipendium Hungaricum coordinator 30 days before arrival, and no fewer than 15 days. If your arrival is 4 September, the notice falls between 5 and 20 August. Send a corrected notice at once if the visa slips and the date moves.
Can I postpone my Stipendium Hungaricum start?
Only for health issues or unexpected reasons beyond your control. You send a written, signed request with proof to Tempus, and the host institution and the Sending Partner must also approve. Students who have already arrived and enrolled cannot request a postponement, so raise it before you travel.
Do award holders pay the Hungarian visa fee?
The Call says scholarship holders are exempt from fees related to their admission to Hungary, and the New Delhi list for award holders charges no visa fee. Travel costs are not covered, so the flight, any reservation and your first-month reserve come from your own funds or your family's.
Do I need a flight booking for a Stipendium Hungaricum visa?
The New Delhi list for award holders asks for a flight booking arranged close to the start of studies. Confirm with the mission whether a reservation is enough. A BookForVisa reservation carries a real PNR, costs $15 per person and stays valid for 48-72 hours, so order it close to the appointment.
Friendly reminder: BookForVisa prepares flight and hotel reservations to support visa applications and onward-travel proof. Requirements vary by destination, consulate, visa category and applicant situation. A reservation supports your file; it is not a paid ticket for travel and does not guarantee visa approval or entry.
