Short answer: A Hungary study residence permit is decided on admission, language, funds, housing and insurance, and the approval doubles as a single-entry D visa. Only some missions list a flight line. Where yours does, a flight itinerary for visa files with a real PNR, valid 48-72 hours, costs $15 per person.
A Hungary study residence permit is a national route for stays beyond 90 days, and first-arrival evidence here means the documents that connect your travel to your course start date. For most applicants abroad, the application at a Hungarian consulate is also the entry visa request, so nothing is filed separately.
Flight proof is not a universal line item: the national rule asks for a valid passport plus a ticket or funds for travel, and some missions list a flight booking while others do not. Your admission certificate sets the date every other document must respect. Check your own mission's list before you book anything.
Key facts for a Hungary study residence permit file
- Indian applicants file at the Embassy in New Delhi or the Consulate General in Mumbai, by home state; NDGAP decides.
- Fee abroad EUR 110, which already includes the entry visa; HUF 39,000 in person or HUF 26,000 online if filed in Hungary.
- Decision on the merits within 60 days; approval works as a type D visa, single entry, valid 3 months, for a stay of up to 30 days.
- Permit validity at least 1 year (or the course length), at most 3 years, never beyond the passport.
- BookForVisa flight and hotel reservations: a flat $15 per person, real PNR on flights, valid 48-72 hours, free date changes on the booking day only, and they can be issued while you are at the embassy or visa centre.

Who Does This Guide Cover, and Which Hungarian Route Is It?

The route here is the residence permit for studies, often called the student residence permit, which Hungarian law builds around a permit for the purpose of studies rather than a tourist or Schengen short-stay visa.
It suits a third-country national who plans to stay beyond 90 days. That means anyone outside the European Union and the European Economic Area, such as an Indian student admitted to a Budapest university.
Indian students need a residence permit for studies. The applicant this guide follows is an international student applying from outside Hungary, from a nationality that needs a visa to enter. The same document logic also helps visa-exempt nationals, but their filing route differs, and a later part of the guide covers that fork.
Two things define eligibility. The first is the course. It must involve full-time public or higher education studies: either a full-time school-system place at a public education institution, or full-time study at a state-recognised higher education institution or a licensed foreign higher education institution operating in Hungary.
A higher education preparatory course also qualifies. The second is language. You need the language skills the programme demands, and the file has to show them.
Think about what this means for the Hungary student visa process in practice. There is no separate visa application stage to schedule around, and you do not apply for the visa separately.
A residence permit application filed at a Hungarian consulate abroad already contains the entry visa request. The immigration authority, the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing, decides the case, and if it approves, the same decision covers the visa that lets you travel and collect the permit.
This study residence route has one application, and that single-application structure is why travel evidence needs care. The documents that prove your purpose, your money, your accommodation, and your insurance all carry dates. Your travel plan carries dates too. If one date drifts, the file stops telling a single story.
Some groups sit outside this route. People with asylum status or protection, EU free-movement persons, long-term EU residents, intra-corporate transferees, and those entering for highly qualified employment follow other rules.
EU and EEA nationals register rather than apply for a permit, and they receive a registration certificate instead. A student already holding another Member State's study permit may qualify for the mobility routes covered later.
Family planning also matters early. Family members of a third country national holding or applying for a residence permit for the purpose of studies are not eligible to apply for a residence permit for the purpose of family reunification.
The one stated exception is a child's birth in Hungary during the permit's validity. So the student travels first, and relatives cannot follow on this basis.
Admission Papers or Student Status Papers?
New applicants usually hold an admission document, because they are not yet enrolled. Students who are already studying, such as those transferring or extending, hold a student status document instead. The national rule accepts either one or the other as credible proof of purpose, and a transfer adds the previous school's records.
Pick whichever your institution issues for your situation. What matters is that it names the programme, the start, and the length of study in the same terms your other papers use.
Visa-Required or Visa-Exempt: The First Fork
The route splits on nationality. If your nationality needs a visa, you file abroad at a Hungarian mission, and the application includes the visa. If your nationality may enter without one and you hold no residence permit, you may file in Hungary instead, through the Enter Hungary platform or at a regional directorate.
Indian applicants file with the Embassy of Hungary in New Delhi or Mumbai, depending on their home state. Applicants of other nationalities living in India, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, or Sri Lanka with lawful stay can use the same mission. Where you file decides which checklist you follow, so settle it before you collect a single document.
What First-Arrival Evidence Means Here
First-arrival evidence is not a form. It is the small set of documents that connect your first entry to your permit: the passport with the approved visa, the certificate of admission, the address you will register, your insurance, a record of funds, and any booking the mission required.
Keep these together in carry-on luggage, in the same order as your file. The point is that each one shows the same course, the same city, and the same dates, so that anyone who reads them reaches one conclusion.
Stay inside the named task. This guide does not explain what a flight reservation is, how airline holds work, how long a visa takes in general, or what a border officer might ask about onward travel.
It also leaves out Schengen tourism. It deals with one question: which travel evidence belongs in a Hungarian study permit file, and how it lines up with the course start date.
One more boundary concerns the student status itself. A permit for studies depends on active enrolment, so everything in the file ultimately proves that a recognised institution expects you on a given date. Treat that date as the anchor. Travel, accommodation, insurance, and payment all hang from it, and the next discussion shows how.
The permit itself runs for a minimum of 1 year. If the programme is shorter, the validity follows the programme length. It cannot run past your travel document, so the passport you submit shapes the permit you can receive.
What Does the Study Permit Application Contain, and Which Documents Are Conditional?
A study file has a fixed core and a changing edge. The core comes from the national rules of the immigration authority.
The edge comes from the competent foreign mission, which adds its own checklist, its own original rules, and sometimes its own extras. The documents required differ in detail from one mission to the next, so read both, and let the mission's list win.
The fixed core
A residence permit for studies requires proof of admission. In practice, an admission certificate, a student status certificate, or other credible proof states your purpose of stay.
An official letter of acceptance certifies active student status and the duration of study, so it is the document every date in the file leans on. Applicants must submit an admission certificate from a state-recognised Hungarian higher education institution, or from a licensed foreign higher education institution operating there.
Next comes language. Proof of language proficiency is required for pursuing chosen courses of study. A language exam certificate, an official diploma from a course in a foreign language, or other credible language evidence all count under the national rule. A mission may phrase it as a language certificate needed only when the education is not in your mother tongue.
Money comes in two parts. Applicants must provide proof of sufficient financial means, and the evidence can be a bank certificate, a notarised family support declaration with proof that the supporter can pay, an employer or tax-authority income document, or a scholarship certificate.
For savings, the rule asks for a bank statement of the balance and a statement of transactions. Missions often set their own look-back window on these financial records, so follow the mission list.
Tuition belongs here too. Proof of tuition fee payment must be presented if applicable, and tuition fees must be paid before applying for a residence permit. If your institution charges no tuition for your programme, the admission paperwork should make that plain.
Accommodation, health cover, and the passport finish the core. Applications for residence permits must include proof of accommodation, because adequate accommodation is a condition of the permit itself.
At national level, that means declaring a real Hungarian address on the application form, with no separate document required, though several missions ask for a lease, a dormitory letter, or a reservation anyway.
Health insurance proof is mandatory for the residence permit application: social security coverage, access under an international agreement, or the ability to pay for healthcare services from funds available in Hungary. A valid passport is required for the residence permit application, and the next table shows how its dates behave.
Required, conditional, and supporting at a glance
Where the edge shows up
The New Delhi list for Indian applicants adds a police clearance certificate, school certificates in English with the most recent ones apostilled, a signed motivation letter in English, a statement committing to voluntary exit when the permit expires, and valid travel insurance.
It also requires originals plus an extra photocopy set. The Islamabad list adds a medical examination certificate and a flight booking line. Both reflect each mission's own practice, which is why a generic checklist from another country misleads.
Passport rules show the same pattern. The New Delhi list wants at least two blank pages, an issue date within the previous 10 years, and validity of at least three months past the end of the authorised stay.
A one-year minimum appears on another mission's sheet. Since the permit cannot outlast the passport, a passport expiring early shortens what you can be granted.
Minors add a layer. Where a third-country national child applies, the file needs parental consent in an authentic instrument or a fully probative private document, translated into Hungarian or English. Minors over six must appear in person, and a legal representative files for a minor with limited or no capacity.
Two other conditions deserve a mention. If you already studied in Hungary, a diploma or credit transcript can be requested. If a family member funds you, evidence of the family relationship goes with the sponsor's income and balance records.
Originals, translations, and paper dates
Paper has its own clocks. One mission's list wants photographs no older than three months, and another sets a three-month limit on the notarised sponsor declaration and a one-year limit on translations. Documents not in English often need a translation stamped by the competent authorities of the issuing country, and school certificates may need an apostille.
Treat each of these as a date that sits next to the course start. A sponsor declaration signed in February and filed in July has quietly expired, even though the page itself looks unchanged.
The immigration authority may request additional documents during the case, and it may request further documents after you file. Photocopies are no substitute when a mission demands originals, so keep the originals reachable until a decision arrives.
Missing or unsuitable papers can lead to refusal, which is why the working method is to tick items off the mission's own list rather than any summary, including this one.
Where Does Travel Evidence Fit, and Who Asks for It?
Travel evidence is the least standardised part of a Hungarian study file. A study residence permit in Hungary comes with specific guidelines regarding travel documents, but they are brief. The national rule is short: a passport valid for the stay plus a valid ticket or funds for travel.
It does not say "show a booked flight". It says you can meet the exit and travel condition with money, and a mission may still add a flight line of its own.
That is why two applicants for the same permit can hold different checklists. The Tehran list carries a line for a flight ticket reservation. The Islamabad list carries a flight booking line.
The Baku sheet lists a plane ticket. The New Delhi list for Indian applicants has no flight line at all, and its only travel-related item is valid travel insurance.
So the honest answer to "is a flight reservation or travel itinerary required?" depends on the mission. A flight reservation or travel itinerary is typically required for applications at the missions that print such a line. Where the list is silent, do not volunteer a paid ticket to look thorough.
The table lays out how four missions word their travel-related lines, so you can see how far the lists drift apart.
The pattern is plain. The flight line appears at three of the four missions, in three different wordings, and the insurance and passport lines differ at all four. A list from one country cannot stand in for another's.
Three kinds of travel evidence, kept apart.
A reservation, an issued ticket, and the journey itself are different things at different stages. Mixing them up causes most of the date trouble described later in the guide.
A reservation shows an intended itinerary and can usually be changed. An issued ticket is paid and carries fare rules. The journey itself happens only on departure day and belongs to the border stage, not to the application. A study file at a consular mission needs at most the first kind, and the second is rarely needed before approval.
Some applicants search for a dummy ticket at this stage. What a Hungarian mission that lists a flight line can check is a verifiable reservation whose dates fit the course start. A BookForVisa reservation costs a flat $15 per person, carries a real PNR, stays valid for 48-72 hours, allows free date changes on the booking day only, and can be issued even while you are at the embassy or visa centre. It is for visa applications and immigration onward proof only, not a paid fare.
What the national rule actually tests
The national rule pairs the passport with a ticket or funds, and the same idea is worded elsewhere as proof of sufficient funds for the stay that also covers your return. Together they point to one test: can you reach Hungary, live there, and leave when the permit ends, without relying on public support?
Sufficient funds for travel to Hungary and return journey must be demonstrated. Comprehensive financial evidence must demonstrate both travel and living expenses, so your bank balance, your sponsor's records, or your scholarship letter should leave visible room for airfare on top of tuition and monthly costs.
Financial capability to cover tuition and living expenses is needed for non-EU/EEA applicants, and travel sits inside that same picture.
Living costs in Hungary vary by city and lifestyle. Budapest rents differ from those in smaller university cities, and your sponsor's letter should not promise a monthly figure your own plan contradicts.
Where a flight line fits in the file
When a mission does ask for a flight booking, it is a supporting travel document. It does not prove purpose, money, or accommodation. Its job is narrower: it shows that your intended arrival date falls inside the visa's use window and before your course starts.
Travel evidence must align with the course start date in the application. If your certificate of admission says classes begin on a Monday, an arrival date three weeks later contradicts the file, and an arrival the day before leaves no time for the address registration and the practical steps that follow entry.
A sensible window is a few days to two weeks before the start, depending on the institution's orientation or enrolment schedule. That is judgment, not a rule. Your institution's international office can tell you the real arrival window, and that date should appear in your plan.
The entry visa is permission to arrive, not a promise of entry
If the application is approved, the visa lets you collect the permit. The visa is type "D", single-entry, valid for 3 months, and it allows a stay of up to 30 days.
A type D visa is preliminary permission to enter. Travellers may be asked to prove they meet the entry and stay conditions, and may be returned at the border if they cannot.
Border questioning about onward tickets is a separate topic and not covered here. For this guide, the point is that your travel evidence, your funds, your accommodation, and your insurance should all tell the same story as the file you submitted. A visa entitling you to enter works best when nothing in your bag contradicts the file.
Choosing between booking now and waiting
For a long-stay application, we would not pay for a fixed-date ticket before the decision. The decision can take up to 60 days, and the entry window opens only after approval. The wider long-stay logic is set out in our guide to flight itinerary rules for Type D visas, and it is worth reading before you spend.
The Hungarian twist is the 3-month window. Book the real ticket after approval, once the visa's issue date and your course start are both in front of you.
How Do the Dates Run From Admission to the First Day of Class?

A study permit is a chain of dated steps, and travel evidence sits near the end of it. Applications for permits should reach the mission well before term. Submitting applications at least 2 to 3 months prior to the course commencement is recommended, because the decision can take weeks and the visa window only opens afterward.
Before You Apply: Admission and Tuition
The first dated documents are the admission certificate and the tuition receipt. Both come from the institution, and both fix the course start and duration. Pay attention to the wording: the certificate should state the programme, the start date, and the planned duration of study, because any later date is read against it.
Tuition fees must be paid before applying for a residence permit, so schedule the payment early and keep the receipt. A transfer that clears a few days late can leave a gap between the certificate and the payment proof.
Filing: Appointment, Fee, and Biometrics
Residence permit applications are submitted at Hungarian consulates abroad. Many missions run appointments through external service providers, and the mission's own page tells you which.
For Indian applicants, the Embassy of Hungary in New Delhi takes an appointment request by email; the application is lodged at the visa application centre in the morning, and the consular interview follows at the embassy on the next working day.
The application fee at a consulate is EUR 110. In New Delhi, card payment happens at the application centre. Biometrics are collected at that appointment, and the applicant's travel document must be presented in the original with a full copy.
Waiting: The Decision Window
The procedural administration period is 15 days, and time spent fixing deficiencies does not count toward it. A decision on the merits is due within 60 days of submission. Application processing can take up to 60 days, and some missions describe a range of a month and a half or so.
During the wait, the authority may ask for more material. Respond within the deadline you are given.
After Approval: The Visa Window
If the regional directorate approves, the approval also covers the entry visa, so the mission affixes the visa in the passport.
The visa is valid for 3 months and allows a single entry and a stay of up to 30 days. If the student does not enter Hungary within 3 months, the approval lapses and the right to enter and stay ends.
Read the validity dates printed on the visa, not only the approval email. These dates become the outer limits for your travel plan, and the course start date sits inside them.
Booking the Real Journey
With the visa in hand, travel planning becomes simple. Pick an arrival date after the visa's start date, before its end date, and ahead of the course start by whatever margin the institution suggests. Match the arrival city to the accommodation city if you can, because the first address registration will happen there.
If a mission asked for a flight booking at filing, the real itinerary should not contradict it. A change of a few days is normal. A change of weeks, or to a different month, warrants a note to the international office so the records agree.
Arrival: The First 30 Days
After entry, the sequence is practical: reach your accommodation, notify your address, attend orientation, and enrol. The study permit document is posted to the education institution's address, so keep your contact with the international office alive. A residence permit issued for study is not sent to you directly.
If the permit has not arrived as the 30-day stay under the visa runs down, tell the international office at once. Interim arrangements depend on the institution and the case, so do not leave this to the last week.
If the Application Is Refused
An appeal must be filed within 8 days of delivery of the refusal, to the first-instance authority or the consulate where you applied. Appeals are dismissed without review if late, filed by an unauthorised person, based on facts you already knew before the decision, or lacking grounds. Do not wait for travel plans to settle before reading the refusal.
Counting Back From the First Day
A practical planning habit is to count backward from the course start in weeks. Twelve weeks out is the filing day. Eight to ten weeks out, the decision may arrive.
Four weeks out, the visa should be in the passport and the real ticket booked. One to two weeks out, the arrival margin begins, and the accommodation check-in sits inside it.
This is our planning rule, not an official schedule. The point is to leave slack at the decision stage, because that is the one stage you cannot speed up, and to fill the slack with preparation, not waiting.
One Exception Worth Knowing
The rules allow, in exceptional cases, an application where you legally stay, with proof of why. This exceptional application submission is not a convenience route. Treat any such application as a case to clear with the mission first, including what proof it wants.
What Does a Document-to-Date Worksheet Look Like for One Applicant?
The worksheet below is fictional. It follows Oliver Grant, an invented applicant living in Mumbai, who has been admitted to a two-year master's programme at an unnamed state-recognised university in Budapest. No real passport, PNR, payment, or reference data appears, and every date sits in 2027 so that you can map the logic onto your own calendar.
Each row names a field, the fictional entry, the date it drives, and the publisher whose rule or checklist supports it. Use the same four columns for your own file, and fill the entries from your documents, not from this example.
Reading the Worksheet From the Top
Everything starts with the course start. Oliver's certificate says 6 September, so the worksheet works backward and forward from that Monday. Backward, it asks when the file must be filed, and forward, it asks when he must arrive.
Filing on 15 June leaves about 12 weeks before the start, which fits the recommended 2 to 3 months. A 60-day decision window then ends on 14 August, so even a slow decision leaves roughly three weeks for travel.
The visa dates come next. In this example, the visa is issued on 9 August, so the 3-month window closes before 9 November. Arrival on 28 August falls comfortably inside it. A student who landed in October would still be inside the window but would have missed the course start, which is the mismatch the worksheet is designed to expose.
The Three Dates That Must Agree
Three entries must agree for the file to read as one story: the course start, the planned arrival, and the accommodation check-in. Oliver's dorm place begins on 28 August, his insurance starts on or before that day, and his arrival is that same Saturday. Nothing on the sheet says "arrive 5 September" while another says "check in 20 August".
The permit period is a fourth, quieter agreement. The requested period begins around the course start and runs for at least a year. A permit cannot be valid longer than the passport, so the passport row guards that line.
Why the Flight Row Reads "None"
Oliver's mission, the Embassy of Hungary in New Delhi, lists valid travel insurance as its only travel-related item, so no flight booking goes into the file. That does not mean he skips travel planning. He keeps a private note of the intended arrival date and sets his reminders after the visa arrives.
If his list had carried a flight line, the row would hold a booking dated to match the 28 August arrival and the worksheet's accommodation row. An applicant at another mission might enter a reservation here and write its dates into the date column. The row is the place to see that those dates line up.
How the Flight Row Would Change at Another Mission
Suppose Oliver's list did carry a flight line, as the Tehran and Islamabad lists do. The row would read: reservation held for Saturday 28 August 2027, Mumbai to Budapest, booking reference withheld here. It would sit beside the accommodation row, because both would show 28 August, and beside the visa row, because the visa window must contain that date.
If the visa then arrived with a window starting on 9 August, nothing would need to change. If the decision ran late and the visa began on 20 August, the reservation would still fit. If the intake moved to 20 September, the reservation would move too.
Funds and Travel in the Same Row
The funds row shows the point from the earlier discussion about travel money. Oliver's sponsor statements need to show enough to cover airfare, tuition, and the first-year costs of living, so the figure the sponsor writes in the support declaration should be large enough that none of these is left to chance.
The mission's look-back window ends at the interview date, which is why the statements are printed late.
What a Broken Worksheet Looks Like
Suppose Oliver's insurance began on 6 September, the course start, while his dorm place began on 28 August and his arrival was 28 August. The worksheet would flag a nine-day gap in cover, and the fix is a start date change on the policy, not a story about the gap.
Suppose his sponsor's statements ended in January because they were printed early. The row would show a window that does not reach the interview. The fix is a fresh printout dated closer to 15 June.
Use the worksheet the same way. Fill every row, scan the date column once from top to bottom, and change the document, not the date, wherever two rows disagree. Dates are easier to fix on paper than at a counter.
How Do Fees, Funds, and Travel Costs Fit Together?
Money in a study file does three jobs at once. It pays the authority's fee, it proves you can live in Hungary, and it shows the journey is affordable. Keeping the three jobs apart makes the paperwork shorter and the travel plan easier to defend.
The fee side
The administrative service fee for a residence permit is EUR 110 at a consulate, paid at the mission or its service provider in euros or another convertible currency. The same application fee of EUR 110 applies abroad, whichever mission you use, and it already includes the entry visa, because there is no separate visa fee for the case.
At some missions, a service provider collects a handling fee on top of the visa fee, and the mission states the figure. Hungarian state scholarship holders are exempt from the application fee at some missions, so a scholarship letter changes your budget.
Filing inside Hungary has its own rates, and these apply to the visa-exempt route covered later. Submitting an application in Hungary costs HUF 39,000 in person. The fee for online applications via Enter Hungary is HUF 26,000. The extension fee for a residence permit is HUF 26,000.
Older university and portal sheets sometimes print HUF 23,000 for an extension, and the application fee is HUF 23,000 for extensions in those versions. The current procedural fee page lists HUF 26,000, so confirm the figure on the day you pay. Payment at the authority is by card, with other methods allowed in the cases the authority describes.
Exemptions are mission-specific. One mission's sheet says holders of Hungarian state scholarships pay no application fee, that Erasmus and other mobility scholarship holders staying under 90 days pay none either, and that those staying over 90 days on a D visa pay the statutory fee. Self-funded students pay EUR 110 in every case.
The funds side
The fee is small beside the sums you must prove. Proof of sufficient financial means is required for residence permits.
Put another way, you need sufficient financial resources for the whole stay, and the rule covers tuition and living costs for the stay. The evidence options were listed earlier: a bank certificate, a notarised support declaration, an income document, or a scholarship certificate.
For a family-funded applicant, the sponsor's regular income matters as much as the balance. A mission such as New Delhi asks for bank statements covering the last six months and proof of the sponsor's ability to support you, such as an income certificate.
Another mission's sheet allows only a parent as sponsor, so the sponsor's identity can be a gating question.
A support declaration is only as strong as the records behind it. One mission treats a sponsorship affidavit as a secondary document and does not accept land registration sheets as liquid funds, so a notarised letter with no statements behind it leaves the money line thin.
Savings need a pair of records: the balance statement and the transaction statement. Financial records that show a large deposit just before filing invite questions, so keep the history that explains it.
The travel side
Travel is the smallest number and the one most often forgotten. Sufficient funds for travel to Hungary and the return journey must be demonstrated, so build a one-line travel budget into the sponsor's calculation. A simple way is to add the airfare for one outbound trip, a margin for rebooking, and the cost of getting home when the permit ends.
You do not need to hold the ticket for this line. A mission that lists a flight booking wants dates. The funds rule wants capacity. Those are different tests, and one document rarely answers both.
A small budget map
The table also protects against a common slip: paying for the real flight with money that the bank statements treat as set aside for tuition. If the sponsor's balance is only just enough for tuition and a year of monthly expenses, the travel cost will pull the file below the line the mission is checking.
Using the budget to choose when to book
The budget map also answers the question of timing. The first three lines fall before the decision. The outbound ticket falls after. That ordering is why we would hold off on a paid ticket until the visa is in the passport, unless the mission's list insists on something earlier.
When a booking is required earlier, the cheapest honest evidence is a short-lived reservation timed to your appointment. Your sponsor's statements and the planned arrival date should still agree on the story: money for the journey exists, and the journey happens on the date the file says.
What Changes If You Enter Without a Visa, Extend, or Use Mobility?
The consular route is only one of several. Three variants change the travel evidence you need, and each is summarised here without becoming a guide of its own. Most applicants will recognise themselves in exactly one.
Visa-Free Nationals Applying From Inside Hungary
If your nationality may enter Hungary without a visa and you hold no residence permit, you may apply after arrival.
Residence permit applications can also be submitted in Hungary under this visa-exempt travel regime, either through the Enter Hungary platform or in person at the regional directorate for your place of accommodation. Applicants using a legal representative or legal entity must use the platform.
Your travel evidence here is the ordinary entry evidence, because there is no consular filing and no visa from a mission. What matters is that your legal stay covers the filing. The application should go in during your visa-free period, so the arrival date, filing date, and course start still need to align.
On the platform, the application counts as received once the fee is paid and biometrics are taken within 15 days of receipt. The online fee is lower than the counter fee, which the fee discussion above lists.
Hungary Student Visa: Extending the Permit
An extension can only be filed inside Hungary, through the platform. You must hold a valid residence permit when you apply, and you must have stayed in Hungary on it for at least 90 days within a 180-day period. Students must reside in Hungary for at least 90 days to renew, so long absences abroad can block a renewal.
The window runs from 90 days before expiry to 30 days before expiry. Applications for extension must be submitted 30 days before expiry at the latest, and filing earlier inside the window leaves room to fix a deficiency. The institution adds a statement of academic progress listing semesters and active semesters.
Extensions run for 1 to 3 years, and the maximum period for any single permit is 3 years. The authority may refuse an extension or revoke the permit if the student fails to obtain a diploma within one and a half times the programme's standard period. Travel evidence plays almost no role here, since you are already resident.
If you change institutions during the permit, an extension request with the new certificate of admission is needed. A change of faculty or field inside the same institution needs no action.
Student Mobility Within the European Union
A student holding another Member State's study permit can move part of their course to Hungary. Two instruments exist, and which one you use depends on the programme.
Students covered by EU or multilateral mobility measures, or by an agreement between institutions, can exercise student mobility by notifying the authority of their student mobility plan and its duration. They then receive a student mobility certificate.
Students outside those programmes can apply for a student mobility residence permit. A mobility permit or a mobility certificate lasts up to 360 days, cannot be extended, and cannot exceed the first Member State's permit.
For the certificate route, you usually arrive on your existing permit and notify the authority, so the travel evidence is the permit and passport you already hold.
Because neither can be extended, staying longer means starting a different application. Plan the mobility period to match the time you actually need.
The Three Routes Side by Side
The table shows why one guide cannot give one answer. A flight line matters only on the first row, and even there only at some missions. On the other two rows, the dates that matter are the dates of your stay.
What the Student Residence Permit Allows After Arrival
A study permit lets you work for a maximum of thirty hours weekly during the school term, and full-time for up to 90 days a year outside it. Students can work up to 30 hours per week during studies, which suits part-time income but should not be counted as financial proof in the application.
A study permit holder cannot receive a national residence card. After studies are successfully completed, a permit for seeking a job or starting a business can be requested, but only while the study permit is still valid. Those later steps belong to their own guides.
Who Gets Left Out
A child born in Hungary during the permit's validity is the stated exception to the family reunification bar. For other relatives, the bar stands, so any plan that relies on family joining you needs a different legal basis.
What Goes Wrong When Documents Disagree on Dates?
Most study files that stall do so on a small, dull inconsistency rather than a missing document. Documents must consistently reflect course commencement dates, and each failure below is a version of that rule-breaking. The fixes are mostly administrative, and they cost least when caught early.
The Arrival Falls After the Start
An applicant books travel for the second week of term because fares are lower. The certificate says the programme begins on the Monday before. The file now contradicts itself, and the first week of classes, registration, and the address steps are missed.
The fix is to move the arrival, not to ask for a new certificate. If the institution truly allows a late arrival, get that in writing from the international office and keep it with the file, because the certificate itself will still show the standard dates.
The Insurance Starts Late
Health insurance must cover the whole stay for which the permit is requested, and some missions say it must cover the entire study period.
A policy that starts on the course start date leaves the days between arrival and class uninsured. Ask the insurer to backdate the start to the arrival date, or buy cover that begins earlier, and attach the corrected policy.
University-arranged insurance, where offered, is stated on some checklists to be enough on its own. Confirm that with the mission, since travel insurance alone is accepted at one mission only when the institution provides general cover.
The Sponsor Statements Are Stale
Missions set look-back windows counted from the interview or appointment date. A statement printed in February, used for an appointment in June, covers the wrong months. The fix is a new printout. Do not alter the dates, and do not write a covering note explaining an old statement, because the window is a rule, not a courtesy.
The Passport Is Too Short
The validity period of the residence permit for studies cannot exceed the validity period of the travel document. A passport that expires in the middle of the programme caps the permit short of the programme. A mission that wants validity three months past the authorised stay will refuse a passport that falls inside that margin.
The fix is to renew the passport before filing. The passport must remain valid for the duration of the intended stay, so renew early rather than counting on a mid-course replacement. Do the renewal first, because everything else in the file refers to its number and expiry.
The Visa Window Is Missed
A visa valid for 3 months with a single entry is easy to misuse. A student who delays travel past the approval window finds that the approval has lapsed. A student who enters, leaves for a trip, and tries to re-enter on the same visa runs into the single-entry limit.
Put the entry deadline on a calendar the day the visa is issued. Add an earlier reminder two weeks ahead. If the intake shifts and the safe arrival date falls outside the window, speak to the mission before the window closes, not after.
The Intake Moves
Institutions sometimes shift an intake date. When the start date moves, the certificate of admission, the accommodation check-in, the insurance start, and any travel booking should all move with it. Ask the international office for an updated certificate rather than relying on an email, and give the mission the new version.
This is where a short-lived reservation earns its place over a paid fare. A BookForVisa reservation allows free date changes on the booking day only, so when the intake moves you create a new $15 reservation for the new arrival instead of rebuying a ticket. If the start date is still soft, our guide to flight booking with a soft start date shows how to time it.
The Preparatory Course Shifts the Calendar
Some students begin with a preparatory course before the main programme. The permit is based on the course you are admitted to, and an extension later requires proof of admission to a recognised institution.
The preparatory course start is the date to anchor the first filing on, so make sure the certificate names it and shows the main programme's start as a later date.
The Accommodation Starts After You Land
A dormitory place that opens on 1 September does not help a student landing on 28 August. The address on the form is real and valid, but the first nights have no cover in the file.
Ask the institution for an earlier check-in letter, or book a short stay and say so in your plan, so the address on the form and the place you sleep never conflict.
An Old Declaration or Translation Slips Through
A sponsor declaration, a translation, or a photograph can be inside its age limit on the day you prepare it and outside it on the day you file. Write the expiry date of each time-limited document on your worksheet, and re-order the oldest one first if the appointment slips by even a week.
The Sponsor Changes Late
A sponsor who changes after the statements were printed breaks the money line. The new sponsor needs a fresh declaration, fresh statements covering the mission's window, and evidence of the relationship where one applies. Some missions accept only a parent as sponsor, so check the rule before you rely on an uncle or a friend of the family.
The Mission Asks for More
The mission may ask for further documents or additional documents after filing. Reply within the deadline, send exactly what was asked, and label each page with your name and case reference. A bundle of extras without being asked can bury the item the officer needs.
If the request relates to a date, send the corrected document, not a new explanation. Corrections speak plainly.
A Short Repair Order
When several dates conflict, fix them in this order: the passport, the certificate of admission, the insurance and accommodation, and last the travel. The order matters because travel dates follow the others. A ticket repaired first is a ticket you may have to repair again.
What Should You Check Before Handing Over the File?
Run this check about a week before the appointment, with the mission's own list open beside you. It takes an hour, and it is the last point at which a wrong date is cheap to fix. Work through the groups in order, because the later groups depend on the earlier ones.
Dates first
- The course start date on the admission certificate matches the start date you used everywhere else.
- Tuition proof is dated before the filing day.
- Sponsor statements cover the look-back window your mission sets, counted back from the appointment.
- The planned arrival is inside the visa window you expect, and ahead of the course start by the margin your institution suggests.
- Insurance begins on or before the arrival date and runs to the end of the requested permit period.
Passport and identity
- The passport is valid beyond the end of the requested permit and beyond any margin your mission sets.
- It has the blank pages your mission asks for, and its issue date meets any age limit on the list.
- Names, spellings, and dates of birth agree across the passport, certificate of admission, bank records, and insurance.
- The photograph meets the size, background, and age rules on your list. Photo age limits differ by mission, and a few weeks can be the difference.
Purpose and money
- The admission certificate comes from a state-recognised higher education institution, or from a licensed foreign institution operating in Hungary.
- Language evidence matches the programme's teaching language.
- Financial proof shows tuition, living costs, and travel, with the sponsor's relationship documented where it applies.
- Savings records come in pairs: a balance statement and a statement of transactions.
Accommodation and health cover
- The real Hungarian address on the form matches the lease, dormitory letter, or reservation you enclose.
- Check-in on that document is no later than your arrival.
- Insurance names the right person and the right period, and proof of premium payment is attached if your list asks for it.
Travel
- If your mission lists a flight booking, its dates fit the accommodation check-in and the course start.
- If it does not, nothing in the file contradicts your planned arrival.
- The funds line leaves visible room for airfare out and home.
Presentation
- Originals are in hand where the mission demands them, with the photocopy sets it asks for.
- Translations are in the required language and within any age limit on the list.
- The application form and appendix are signed by the right people, including a parent for a minor.
- The fee is ready in the currency and method the mission accepts.
Three Read-Throughs
Do three passes with a different question each time. The first pass is a date scan: list every date in the file on one page and look for a pair that cannot both be true.
The second pass is a mission scan: tick each line on the mission's checklist against a physical document. The third pass is a stranger scan: hand the folder to someone who has not seen it and ask them to describe, in two sentences, who you are, where you are going, and when.
If the stranger gets the course, the city, and the arrival date right, the file reads as one story. If they hesitate on a date, find the document that caused it.
When One Item Is Missing
If a document cannot be ready in time, ask the mission whether the appointment can move, rather than filing without it.
Missions state that missing or inappropriate documents may lead to refusal, so a later date with a complete file is safer than an early date with a gap. Do not substitute a different document type unless the list allows it.
Keep a change log. Each time a date moves, note the old date, the new date, and the documents you updated. The log makes the final scan faster and shows you at a glance which papers still carry an old date.
The Day Before
Charge the phone that will hold appointment emails, and put the folder where it cannot be forgotten. Carry the originals, the photocopy sets, the fee, and the printed appointment confirmation. Arrive early, because appointments run on fixed slots at the service provider.
After submission, record the case reference and the date. Your worksheet from earlier should now have two more rows: the filing date and the decision due date. Update it when the visa arrives, and again on arrival day.
Which Questions Do Applicants Ask Before Booking Travel?
Do You Need a Paid Ticket to Apply?
Not by national rule, which asks for a valid ticket or funds for travel. A paid ticket is not a universal requirement for the application stage. Check your mission's list, and buy the real ticket after approval unless the list says otherwise.
What Should a Flight Booking Show When Your Mission Lists One?
It should show an arrival date that fits the visa window and the course start, and it should agree with your accommodation. The booking is a supporting document. It does not replace funds, admission, or insurance.
Can You Apply From a Country Other Than Your Own?
The usual rule is to apply at the mission competent for your nationality or habitual residence. In exceptional cases, you may apply where you legally stay, with proof of why. Ask the Hungarian embassy or consulate before you travel for that purpose.
Where Do You File if You Live Outside Delhi?
Indian applicants apply at New Delhi or Mumbai, depending on their state, and applicants of other nationalities need lawful residence in India, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, or Sri Lanka. The embassy's page lists the consular districts, so match your state to it.
Who Collects the Visa and the Permit?
The applicant collects the passport and decision, or a representative holding a notarised authorisation letter does. The study permit document itself is posted to the education institution's address after you arrive.
What if the Course Start Moves After Approval?
Ask the international office for an updated certificate, then update the accommodation, insurance, and travel dates. The visa's own dates do not change, so the new arrival must still fall inside the 3-month window.
How Long Does the Permit Last?
A study permit lasts a minimum of 1 year, or the programme length if shorter, up to a maximum of 3 years. An extension adds 1 to 3 years and cannot outlast the travel document. The validity is capped by the passport, which is one reason to renew a short passport early.
Can Parents or a Spouse Come With You?
Not on a family reunification basis, as covered earlier. Visits are a separate matter and follow the short-stay rules, which this guide does not cover.
Does an Indian Student Need Anything Different?
The permit rules are the same for every applicant. What changes is the mission checklist. The New Delhi list asks for a police clearance certificate, apostilled recent school certificates, a signed motivation letter and a voluntary exit statement, and it accepts originals only. Use that list, not one from another country.
When Should the Reservation Be Made?
Close to the appointment, and only if the mission asks for one before approval. A BookForVisa reservation stays valid for 48-72 hours and allows free date changes on the booking day only, so time the order to the filing day and make a new one if the intake moves. Keep the original and the revised dates in your worksheet so the file never shows two different arrivals.
What if the Decision Runs Past the Expected Window?
The procedural period is 15 days, a decision on the merits is due within 60 days, and the clock stops while you fix deficiencies. Reply quickly to any request, and tell the international office if the likely arrival date is slipping toward the course start.
Can You Travel Before You Hold the Permit Card?
The visa lets you enter and stay up to 30 days, and the permit card is posted to the institution. Your plans should assume that the card is collected after arrival, not before departure.
Is a Short Hotel Booking Enough as Accommodation?
It depends on the list. Some missions accept a reservation with proof of payment among several forms of accommodation evidence, and one sheet asks for a booking covering at least 30 days. The form itself still needs a real address, so a hotel can bridge the first weeks only where the list allows it, and a longer arrangement follows.
Where Do Visa-Free Students Stand?
They apply in Hungary after arrival, within their legal stay, and do not receive a D entry visa. Their fee is the Hungarian filing fee, and their key travel evidence is simply the entry record.
Which Sources Does This Guide Draw On?
Rules and figures were read from the pages below on 3 November 2026. Requirements, fees and checklists change, so confirm each point on the current page of your own mission before you rely on it.
- National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing of Hungary (NDGAP): Residence of the student, pupil, for eligibility, documents, the 15-day and 60-day periods, the type D visa, validity, work hours, extension, mobility and the 8-day appeal.
- NDGAP: Procedural fees, for EUR 110 abroad and HUF 39,000, HUF 26,000 and HUF 26,000 in Hungary.
- Embassy of Hungary, New Delhi: D type long-term permit application, with its Residence Permit for the Purpose of Study checklist, for consular districts, appointments, card payment at VFS and the Indian document list.
- Embassy of Hungary, Islamabad, Tehran and Baku checklists, the Consulate General in Istanbul, the Embassy in Tel Aviv, and the European Commission EU Immigration Portal page "Student: Hungary", named for comparison only. Mission lists are quoted as published at the time of writing and can change without notice.
What Is the Next Step for Your Course Start?
For a Hungary study residence permit, the course start date is the fixed point, and the travel evidence you choose should simply agree with it. Open your mission's current checklist today, find out whether it lists a flight line, and fill out the worksheet from your own documents.
If a booking is required, keep it flexible until the visa shows its dates. Then book the real journey with the 3-month entry window and your institution's arrival advice in front of you.
Visa window and course start confirmed? Match the arrival on your file with a flight reservation that carries a real PNR, for a flat $15 per person, valid 48-72 hours.
Create your $15 flight reservationFrequently Asked Questions
Do you need a flight ticket for a Hungary study residence permit?
Not by national rule. NDGAP asks for a valid passport plus a ticket or funds for travel, and the New Delhi checklist has no flight line. Some missions, such as Islamabad and Tehran, list a flight booking. Where yours does, a reservation with a real PNR at $15 per person shows the arrival date without buying a fare.
How long does a Hungary study permit decision take?
NDGAP sets a 15-day procedural period and a decision on the merits within 60 days of submission. Time spent fixing missing documents does not count, and the authority may ask for more. File at least two to three months before the course starts so a slow decision still leaves time to travel.
What does the Hungarian D visa for students allow?
Approval abroad also covers a type D visa. It is single entry, valid for 3 months and allows a stay of up to 30 days while the permit card is produced and posted to your institution. If you do not enter within 3 months of approval, the approval lapses and you must start again.
How much is the Hungary study residence permit fee?
NDGAP lists EUR 110 for a permit filed at a mission abroad, which includes the entry visa. Filing inside Hungary costs HUF 39,000 in person or HUF 26,000 through Enter Hungary, and an extension costs HUF 26,000. Some missions exempt Hungarian state scholarship holders, so check your own list.
When should the arrival date be in a Hungary study file?
After the visa is issued, inside its 3-month window, and a few days to two weeks before the course start, depending on your institution's orientation. That margin is a planning judgment, not a rule. Match insurance and accommodation to the same arrival day so all three dates agree.
Can I use a hotel booking as accommodation for a Hungary study permit?
Only where your mission allows it. New Delhi accepts a reservation with proof of payment among several options, alongside a dormitory certificate or a lease. The form still needs a real Hungarian address, so a short hotel stay can bridge the first nights while a longer arrangement follows.
Friendly reminder: BookForVisa prepares flight and hotel reservations to support visa applications and onward-travel proof. Requirements vary by destination, consulate, visa category and applicant situation. A reservation supports your file; it is not a paid ticket for travel and does not guarantee visa approval or entry.
