How to Apply for a South Korea Visa From the Philippines

How to Apply for a South Korea Visa From the Philippines

Short answer: To apply for a South Korea visa from the Philippines, prepare the C-3-9 tourist checklist, then submit in person at the Korea Visa Application Center in BGC, through a designated travel agency, or by W Express mail. Stays of 59 days or less carry no visa fee. A flight reservation for visa costs $15 per person.

Filipino passport holders need a visa to visit mainland South Korea as tourists. The visa is the short-term visit tourist visa, category C-3-9, issued by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in the Philippines. Tourist applications are filed through the Korea Visa Application Center (KVAC) in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig, through travel agencies the Embassy has designated, or by mail through W Express.

This guide is written for Filipinos applying from the Philippines. It covers the Filipino-specific rules that do not apply elsewhere: the no-fee rule for stays of 59 days or less, the PHP 1,000 KVAC service fee, the Certificate of Employment format with an HR landline, the bank certificate with a 6-month average daily balance, OECD visas as travel history, PSA documents for sponsors, the mail-in option, the 14-working-day processing time and the 3-month wait before reapplying. If you are an Indian national, read our separate South Korea visa from India guide instead, because the process and documents are different.

Facts come from the Korea Visa Application Center in Manila and the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in the Philippines unless another source is named. Both update their requirements often, so check the Embassy's latest C-3-9 file and the KVAC notices before you apply.

Do Filipinos Need a Visa for South Korea?

Yes. Filipino ordinary passport holders need a visa for a tourist trip to mainland South Korea. For a holiday the category is C-3-9, the short-term visit visa for tourists. KVAC explains that "short-term" means up to 90 days. The Embassy publishes separate C-3 requirement lists for other short visits, including:

  • Short-term visit for tourist (C-3-9).
  • Short-term visit for family and friends (C-3).
  • Short-term visit for invited guests, such as business, religion or events (C-3).
  • Short-term visit for a Filipino married to a Korean (C-3-1), which can only be applied for after the marriage is registered in both countries.

You cannot work on a C-3 visa. Longer stays, such as joining family or working, need a different visa category with its own list.

What about Jeju?

KVAC's FAQ explains one trap. If you already hold a valid Korean visa, it will be used even if you only travel to a visa-free area such as Jeju Island. For example, on a trip from the Philippines to Jeju and back, a single-entry visa in your passport is tagged as used. If you plan a later trip to the mainland, keep this in mind when choosing your travel order.

Korea Visa Application Center (KVAC) in BGC

The Korea Visa Application Center in Manila is run by Hanatour Philippines on behalf of the Embassy and consulate. It is not part of the Embassy. It receives applications, enters them into the system, sends them to the Embassy, collects fees on the Embassy's behalf and returns passports.

Who can submit for you

KVAC accepts applications in person, or through a delegate limited to:

  • A travel agency designated by the Korean Embassy in the Philippines. If you live in the provinces, you can use the nearest designated agency; the Embassy publishes the current list.
  • A co-worker bringing a Certificate of Employment to prove the relationship.
  • A family member bringing a certificate that proves the relationship.
  • An authorised representative with proof of acquaintance with you.

By mail through W Express

Since 1 May 2024, the Embassy accepts tourist (C-3-9) applications from Filipinos by mail, nationwide, through the assigned courier W Express only. Non-Filipinos and other visa types must still apply in person at KVAC or through a designated agency. The Embassy's notice set the mailing service at PHP 1,000 per application on top of the KVAC service fee, collected on receipt, with a service time of 14 working days counted from when W Express receives the application to delivery of the passport. KVAC's service fee has since risen, so confirm the current total with W Express before sending.

Step-by-Step: How to Apply From the Philippines

  1. Download the current C-3-9 file from the Embassy's visa requirements page, including the application form. KVAC says to print the form exactly as shown, 5 pages, not back-to-back or two-sided.
  2. Fill in the form. A typewritten (computerised) form is preferred. A handwritten form is accepted if it is legible, in black ink and all capital letters. Applications through accredited travel agencies must be typewritten.
  3. Sign by hand. The signature on the form should be a wet signature in black ink, not an e-signature. Applicants aged 13 and over must also sign the third page of their passport.
  4. Attach your photo inside the red frame on the upper left of the form.
  5. Gather your documents using the checklist for your situation, below.
  6. Submit at KVAC between 08:30 and 16:00, through a designated agency, or by W Express mail.
  7. Pay in cash: the KVAC service fee and, if your stay is 60 days or more, the visa fee.
  8. Track your application by SMS from KVAC and on the Korea Visa Portal, then collect your passport.

KVAC suggests applying about 2 months before your intended travel date. Do not rely on applying a week before your flight: processing is now 14 working days, which is nearly 3 calendar weeks.

Photo rules

KVAC lists the photo rules as a colour photo taken within the last 6 months, full face without a hat, front view, against a white or off-white background, glued within the red frame on the form. KVAC also publishes photo rejection criteria, so check them before you print.

Passport validity

Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay. Minors aged 12 and below leave the passport signature blank.

Documents for a Korea Tourist Visa

The Embassy's C-3 requirement lists for Filipinos share a common core. Download the C-3-9 file for the exact list for your work type, because it changes from time to time.

For everyone

  • Visa application form, signed.
  • 1 passport-size colour photo.
  • Original passport.
  • Photocopy of the passport bio-page (page 2).
  • Original and photocopy of valid visas and arrival stamps to OECD member countries from the past 5 years, if you have them.

If you are employed

The Embassy's format for the Certificate of Employment is strict. It must be the original and include your position, date hired, compensation, office address, the HR landline number (a mobile number is not allowed) and the HR email address. Add a photocopy of your Income Tax Return or BIR Form 2316.

If you are self-employed

Include your business registration from the SEC or DTI (copy), your business permit or Mayor's permit (copy), and a photocopy of your ITR. KVAC's FAQ adds that freelancers and online sellers without an ITR can submit an explanation letter addressed to the Embassy of Korea in the Philippines stating why they cannot provide it.

Bank certificate

The Embassy asks for an original bank certificate, personal or from the person supporting you, showing the account name, account number, account type, current balance, account opening date and 6-month average daily balance (ADB). KVAC says there is no required amount, as long as it covers your intended length of stay in South Korea.

If someone is sponsoring you

Show the relationship with original PSA documents, such as a PSA birth certificate or PSA marriage certificate, and include the sponsor's Certificate of Employment, ITR and bank certificate in the same formats. For example, the Embassy's list for housewives asks for the husband's employment or business documents, his or the applicant's bank certificate, and the original PSA marriage certificate.

Cover letter

A cover letter is not a template document. KVAC says it has no template and that you should address it to the Korea Embassy. Use it to explain your plan, your travel history and anything unusual in your file.

Your documents are kept

KVAC says submitted documents are not returned, except the passport. Keep copies of everything before you submit.

Visiting KVAC: Rules on the Day

KVAC is inside the Brittany Hotel in BGC, and its visit page sets rules for the reception area:

  • Security may refuse certain items at the entrance.
  • There is no storage service for belongings, so leave bags and large items elsewhere before you go in.
  • Only applicants may enter. Children, people with disabilities and seniors may be accompanied, and helpers for physical difficulty or translation are allowed.
  • Photography is not allowed inside, except in the waiting area.
  • Avoid eating and loud conversation in the centre.

There is no dress code, but because the centre is in a hotel, KVAC encourages visitors to dress appropriately. Arrive well before the 16:00 cut-off for individual submissions, and bring cash for the service fee, any visa fee, photocopies and parking. A number dispenser manages the queue, and staff in the waiting area can answer questions about your documents.

Filipinos Married to Koreans and Other C-3 Visits

If you are visiting family or friends, or you are invited by a company or organisation, use the matching C-3 list instead of the tourist list. Invitations from Korea must be written in Korean, with a copy of the inviter's passport or identification card, or for a company, a copy of its Korean business permit. The Embassy notes that authentication of these documents is not required.

Short-term visit for a Filipino married to a Korean (C-3-1)

This visa can only be applied for after the marriage is registered in both Korea and the Philippines. If the Korean spouse is not based in the Philippines, the Embassy says to apply for a spouse (F-6) visa instead. The Embassy's list includes:

  • The application form, photo, original passport and bio-page copy.
  • Copies of OECD visas and arrival stamps from the past 5 years, if any.
  • Original PSA marriage certificate.
  • A copy of the detailed Certificate of Korean Marriage History, valid for 3 months.
  • A copy of the Korean spouse's passport bio-page and an invitation letter in Korean from the spouse.
  • Proof that the Korean spouse lives in the Philippines, such as their Philippine visa and ACR I-Card, an employment certificate, or DTI or SEC and Mayor's permit documents for a business.

For this category the Embassy lists the fee as gratis for stays below 59 days, PHP 2,000 for more than 60 days, and gratis for a 5-year multiple-entry visa allowing 30-day stays. Multiple-entry visas may only be granted to couples who have been married for more than 1 year. If the couple has children, the Korean spouse's Family Register Certificate is also needed.

Embassy of the Republic of Korea in the Philippines

The Embassy is at 122 Upper McKinley Road, McKinley Town Center, Fort Bonifacio, Taguig city 1634, Philippines Get directions. Its office hours are 08:00 to 17:00, Monday to Friday, and its main phone line is +63-2-8856-9210. Its emergency hotline is not for visa questions.

For questions about appointments, fees, the status of an application or passport release, contact KVAC rather than the Embassy, by email at kvacph@visaforkorea-mn.com or by phone at 02-8248-5440. KVAC answers calls from 09:00 to 17:30 on weekdays.

Planning Your Timeline

With 14 working days of processing and holidays on both the Philippine and Korean calendars, build in a buffer. A practical plan for a spring cherry-blossom trip looks like this:

When What to do
10 to 12 weeks before Check your passport has six months beyond your stay and is signed on page 3; ask HR for a COE in the Embassy format.
8 to 10 weeks before Get your bank certificate with the 6-month ADB, ITR or Form 2316, and copies of any OECD visas.
About 8 weeks before Download the latest C-3-9 file, fill in and sign the form, attach the photo, and get a tentative flight reservation and hotel name.
6 to 8 weeks before Submit at KVAC, a designated agency or by W Express.
3 to 5 weeks before Allow 14 working days plus holidays and delivery time; collect your passport after the SMS.
After approval Buy your flights and finalise accommodation.

KVAC posts holiday closures on its notices page, such as the closures announced for 2 November and 16 to 18 November 2026, so check before you plan your submission day.

How to Write Your Cover Letter

KVAC says it has no cover letter template and that the letter should be addressed to the Korea Embassy. A short, clear letter helps the visa officer read your file, especially if something in it needs explaining. Keep it to one page and cover:

  1. Who you are. Your full name as in your passport, passport number, and your job or business in the Philippines.
  2. Your trip. The purpose, such as sightseeing in Seoul and Busan, your planned arrival and departure dates, and the total number of days, which also decides whether a visa fee applies.
  3. Where you will stay. The hotel name or names, matching any reservation you attach.
  4. Who is paying. Yourself, pointing to your bank certificate and ITR, or a sponsor, with the PSA document that proves your relationship.
  5. Your ties to the Philippines. Your work, approved leave, business, studies or family, and the date you return.
  6. Your travel history. Previous trips to Korea or OECD countries, and confirmation that you have always left on time.
  7. Anything missing. If a document on the list is unavailable, explain why, for example a freelancer without an ITR.

Sign the letter by hand. Keep every date and name consistent with your form, COE leave dates and flight reservation, because the officer will compare them. If you want to ask for a multiple-entry visa, explain why in the letter, but remember that the type of visa granted is the Embassy's decision.

Korea Visa Fees for Filipinos

The Embassy sets the visa fee by length of stay. Filipino applicants pay:

Stay in Korea Embassy visa fee
59 days or less Gratis (free)
60 to 90 days PHP 2,000

In practice, most Filipino tourists pay no visa fee at all. A 7-day trip to Seoul, a 2-week tour of Seoul, Busan and Gyeongju, or even a 6-week stay with friends all fall under the 59-day band. The PHP 2,000 fee applies only if the stay you apply for is 60 days or more, up to the 90-day short-term limit. Make sure the length of stay on your form, cover letter and flight reservation is the same, because the fee band follows the stay you declare.

On top of the visa fee, KVAC charges its own service fee. Both are paid in cash only, so bring exact cash where you can. A family of four applying for a one-week holiday, for example, pays the PHP 1,000 KVAC fee for each of the 4 applications and no visa fee.

KVAC charge Amount
Service fee per application (from 25 August 2026) PHP 1,000
Premium Lounge submission PHP 2,000 per application
Passport delivery by W Express within Metro Manila PHP 430
Passport delivery outside Metro Manila PHP 530
Photocopy or printing PHP 20 per page
Parking at Brittany Hotel PHP 70 for the first 3 hours, PHP 20 per extra hour
SMS tracking Free

KVAC states that its fees are not returned regardless of the result. Designated travel agencies may charge their own handling fees on top.

Processing Time and Tracking

KVAC announced that from 3 November 2026 the processing time for short-term visit (C-3) visas is 14 working days, up from 12. Express applications still take 5 working days, but check whether your category qualifies before you plan around it. After you receive the SMS that your passport is ready, you may visit the centre on the next working day.

How to track

  • KVAC sends status updates by SMS free of charge. The final SMS says the assessment is complete, but not whether the visa was approved.
  • On the Korea Visa Portal (visa.go.kr), choose Check Application Status, then select the diplomatic office and enter your passport number and name in English as last name, space, first name, space, second name. Do not include your middle name.

Collecting your passport

If you collect it yourself, bring a valid government ID and the application receipt with a barcode. If a third person who is not one of the applicants collects for you, they need a notarised Special Power of Attorney signed by each applicant, photocopies of the valid IDs of all applicants, a photocopy of the representative's valid ID with 3 signatures on the side, and the original application receipts. If you lose your receipt, bring a photocopy of your valid government ID and the original police report.

Flight Reservations for Your Korea Visa

KVAC's FAQ is clear: you do not need a confirmed flight itinerary and hotel before applying for a Korean visa, and a tentative flight date and hotel name will do. A reservation with a real PNR lets you show a tentative plan without buying a ticket.

  • BookForVisa reservations cost a flat $15 per person and include a real PNR that can be checked.
  • Each reservation is valid for 48-72 hours, so get it close to your submission date.
  • Date changes are free on the booking day only.
  • It can be issued even while you are at the visa centre.
  • It works for visa applications and for onward-travel proof.

See our guide to the difference between an itinerary, a booking and a reservation if you are unsure what to present. If you use another provider, a dummy ticket should still be verifiable and match the dates on your form, cover letter and leave approval.

If Your Korea Visa Is Refused

A refusal slip is attached to your passport. KVAC says the exact reason for a refusal is outside its scope and is solely the Embassy's decision, so it cannot explain it further.

You may reapply after 3 months. For spouse visa applicants, the wait is 6 months. Use the time to strengthen the parts of your file that were weakest: a Certificate of Employment in the exact Embassy format, a bank certificate with the 6-month ADB, ITR or Form 2316, and a clear cover letter about your plans and travel history.

KVAC also notes it cannot guarantee approval; the decision is entirely the Embassy's after reviewing your documents.

Renewed Passport, Name Changes and Visa Validity

If you renewed your passport and your old passport holds a valid Korean visa, report the change of passport information on the Korea Visa Portal, following the Embassy's notice. KVAC says approval of the request usually takes 3 to 5 working days, after which you can print the updated visa grant notice. If your name or date of birth changed on the new passport, you must apply for a new visa.

If your visa expires while you are in Korea, KVAC says this is not a problem: you may stay for the period and under the conditions authorised by the Embassy.

Common Mistakes Filipino Applicants Make

  • A COE with a mobile number only. The Embassy format asks for an HR landline and HR email.
  • A bank statement instead of a bank certificate. The certificate must show the 6-month average daily balance and the account opening date.
  • A two-sided form. Print the 5-page form exactly as published.
  • An e-signature on the form. Use a wet signature in black ink.
  • Unsigned passport. Applicants aged 13 and over must sign page 3.
  • Leaving out OECD visas. Copies of visas and arrival stamps from OECD countries in the past 5 years help show your travel history.
  • Bringing cards for the fee. KVAC fees and the visa fee are cash only.
  • Applying too late. Processing is 14 working days, and KVAC closes on Philippine and Korean holidays.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I apply for a Korea visa from the Philippines?

Download the Embassy's latest C-3-9 tourist file, print the 5-page form single-sided, sign it in black ink and attach your photo. Gather the documents for your work type, then submit at the Korea Visa Application Center in BGC, through an Embassy-designated travel agency, or by mail through W Express, and pay in cash.

How much is the Korea visa fee for Filipinos?

For Filipino applicants the Embassy visa fee is gratis for stays of 59 days or less and PHP 2,000 for stays of 60 to 90 days. The Korea Visa Application Center adds a service fee of PHP 1,000 per application from 25 August 2026. Both are paid in cash, and KVAC fees are not returned.

How long does a Korea tourist visa take in the Philippines?

From 3 November 2026, KVAC says short-term visit (C-3) visas take 14 working days, up from 12. Express applications take 5 working days where a category qualifies. You get an SMS when your passport is ready and can collect it from the next working day. Apply about 2 months before travel.

Do I need a bank statement for a Korea visa?

The Embassy format asks for an original bank certificate showing the account name, number, type, current balance, opening date and 6-month average daily balance. KVAC says no fixed amount is required, as long as it covers your intended stay. Check the current C-3-9 file for any extra financial documents for your category.

Can I apply for a Korea visa by mail from the province?

Yes. Since 1 May 2024, Filipinos can send C-3-9 tourist applications by mail nationwide through W Express, the Embassy's assigned courier. Mail-in carries a separate mailing charge on top of the KVAC fee. You can also use the nearest Embassy-designated travel agency, which may charge its own handling fee for the service.

Do I need a confirmed flight for a Korea visa?

No. KVAC says a confirmed flight and hotel are not needed before applying, and a tentative flight date and hotel name will suffice. A BookForVisa reservation has a real PNR, costs $15 per person, stays valid 48-72 hours and allows free date changes on the booking day only, matching your dates.

When can I reapply after a Korea visa refusal?

KVAC says you can reapply after 3 months, or 6 months for spouse visa applicants. The refusal slip is attached to your passport, and KVAC cannot explain the reason because the decision is the Embassy's alone. Strengthen your Certificate of Employment, bank certificate and cover letter before you submit a new application.

Friendly reminder: BookForVisa prepares flight and hotel reservations to support visa applications and onward-travel proof. Requirements vary by destination, consulate, visa category and applicant situation. A reservation supports your file; it is not a paid ticket for travel and does not guarantee visa approval or entry.
