Netherlands Student MVV Flight Timing After IND Approval

Netherlands Student MVV Flight Timing After IND Approval

Short answer: For an Indian student on the Dutch MVV route, a flight reservation for visa is a planning aid, not a listed IND student-permit or sticker-appointment requirement. The recognised university applies first, the IND decides, and the student obtains the MVV sticker before committing to a flight whose arrival fits its validity and the university’s schedule. An issued airline ticket is still needed for travel.

A Netherlands study visa for a student from India follows a fixed order. Your university, as a recognised sponsor, applies. The IND decides. The Dutch mission in India then places the MVV sticker.

A flight date only becomes useful after those three steps, because the sticker carries its own 90-day clock, and the first flight a student books should fit inside it.

The main limit is timing, and it runs in both directions. Book too early and you risk a fare that no longer fits the sticker. Book too late and you may miss the orientation week.

This guide sets out each sponsor stage, the documents behind it, the fees and funds that gate the file, and a fictional worksheet that ties every date to an official source.

Key facts for this route

  • The recognised university submits the combined MVV and residence application.
  • The IND decides; the Dutch mission in India places the sticker after approval.
  • The 2026 higher-education study norm is €1,130.77 per month; check the filing-year amount.
  • Apply for the sticker within three months of the positive decision and read its actual From/Until dates.
  • Do not label a temporary reservation as an issued ticket or treat it as mandatory when the official checklist does not ask for it.

Official-source check: The IND higher-education student route confirms the recognised sponsor, combined application, decision period and fee; the IND study amounts list the 2026 monthly norm; and NetherlandsWorldwide’s India MVV instructions govern the appointment, passport and sticker checks. Who Does This Route Cover, and What Stays Out of Scope?

Who Does This Route Cover, and What Stays Out of Scope?

This guide follows one applicant: a student from India who has been admitted to a full-time programme at a Dutch university or university of applied sciences and who needs an MVV before flying. The planned stay is longer than 90 days, so the whole plan sits on the entry-plus-residence route, not on a visit.

The Netherlands student visa requirements start with a distinction that catches many first-time applicants. To study in the Netherlands for longer than 90 days requires a combined entry and residence permit. A short-stay Schengen visa is a visitor document, and it allows a maximum of 90 days within any 180-day period.

Indian students need an MVV for long stays over 90 days. The MVV is a provisional residence permit, written in Dutch as machtiging tot voorlopig verblijf, and it is a long-stay visa shown as type D on the sticker. It gets you in. The residence permit is what lets you stay.

The Applicant Behind the Example

Later in this guide, a fictional student named Daniel Foster lives in Delhi and applies to a fictional Dutch university. India matters for two reasons. The passport decides that an MVV is needed, and the missions in India decide where the sticker is placed.

The MVV entry visa is placed in your passport by a Dutch mission, and it is valid for 90 days from issue. In India, the sticker is placed at the embassy in New Delhi or at the consulate general in Mumbai or Bangalore.

The IND letter names one of them. You may also use a different location in India from the one named, and no permission is needed for that.

A student who only needs a short stay visa for a campus open day is on a different path altogether. That trip has its own checklist, and it should not be confused with the study file, which the university builds and the IND decides.

What Changes for a Passport Issued in India?

The core rules come from the IND and apply to every applicant who needs an MVV. What differs by country is the mission list, the appointment tool, and the way a passport travels back to you after the sticker is placed. India has its own courier arrangement and its own set of three mission locations, and this guide follows them.

If you hold another nationality or live in another country, the sponsor and decision stages stay the same, and the sticker stage follows that country's NetherlandsWorldwide page. The money and document rules also stay the same, so most of this guide still helps, though its India-specific dates and steps do not.

Where This Guide Stops

Several neighbouring tasks are summarised here and kept short on purpose:

  • Passport holders from the European Union follow a different route, and some other nationalities are exempt from the MVV. If your nationality is not Indian, confirm your status with your university before using any date in this guide.

  • Secondary and senior secondary vocational programmes have their own IND page and a lower study amount of €928.58 per month in 2026. This guide stays with higher education, meaning university and HBO programmes.

  • Your institution can also apply for permits for your family members, but it is only ever responsible for you. Their paperwork is a separate task, and a family member does not need to take the civic integration exam abroad first.

  • A short Schengen business visit follows another checklist and another reservation logic. Our guide to Netherlands business visa documents and reservation timing covers that route.

  • General definitions of flight reservations, airline holds, and onward-ticket rules also stay out, and our general flight reservation guide covers the basics. This guide only places the flight inside the sponsor and sticker order.

Why the Sequence Matters More Than the Date

Most applicants ask for the cheapest flight first and the paperwork second. For this route, the order runs the other way. Admission leads to the sponsor application, the sponsor application leads to the IND decision, and the decision leads to an appointment where a sticker is placed in your passport.

Every later date hangs from the sticker. Its issue date starts a 90-day period, and its From and Until dates limit when you may enter. A flight bought before those dates exist is a guess, and a wrong guess costs money.

The sequence also protects your documents. Bank proof goes stale after three months, passport validity must cover the appointment with room to spare, and the orientation schedule at your university sets the latest sensible arrival. Each of those rules is covered in the discussions below.

The 2026 study year amounts are used throughout. Amounts change every 1 January, so a file filed in January 2027 or later uses whatever figure the IND lists then. Treat every euro figure in this guide as a 2026 figure and check the current amount before you transfer money.

One more boundary helps. This guide does not tell you whether to study in the Netherlands, which programme to pick, or how to rank universities. It starts after admission and stops when the residence permit is in your hand, and your first registration steps are done.

Why Does Only Your University Apply, and What Does the IND Decide?

Under Dutch rules, you do not file the application yourself. Only recognised institutions can file student residence applications, and for a university or HBO programme, that institution is your own. Your university applies for both the MVV and the residence permit together, in one combined application.

That is why the Dutch student visa application is really a university-led file. Your educational institution submits the visa application on your behalf, and your university submits the MVV application on your behalf as part of the same step. Your job is to supply what it asks for, on time and in the right form.

Dutch Student Visa Application: What Does the IND Actually Decide?

The Immigration and Naturalisation Service, known as the IND, manages the application process for Dutch student visas. The IND makes the legal decision based on the university's application. The missions abroad do not decide; they place the sticker once the IND approves.

Think about what this means for your timeline. You cannot speed the decision by visiting a mission, and you cannot apply to the Dutch immigration authorities yourself for a standard study permit. Your leverage is a complete, correct file delivered to the university early.

What the University Must Confirm Before It Applies

Before the university applies, the IND's conditions must already be met. The Dutch student visa process involves submitting required financial and identity documents to the university for MVV approval, so the university checks them first.

The list the IND sets is specific:

  • You have proof of registration, or temporary proof of registration, as a student.

  • Your study programme is accredited, meaning it is recognised by the Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO) or the European Quality Assurance Register for Higher Education (EQAR).

  • Your educational institution is a sponsor recognised by the IND, and it appears in the IND public register for study.

  • You will enrol on a full-time study programme.

  • You meet the income requirements.

Students must be admitted to a full-time study programme at an IND-recognised institution. You need proof of acceptance from a recognized institution, and the university must confirm your financial means before application. Without those, the file does not leave the university.

Which Obligations Fall on You and Which on the Sponsor?

A recognised sponsor for study purposes has an obligation to provide information, an obligation to keep records, and a duty of care. As a student, you only have an obligation to provide information.

That is a lighter load, but it is real: a change in your situation must be reported, and the IND can issue an administrative fine if obligations are not met.

Study progress is the ongoing condition. Every year you must obtain at least 50% of the credits for each study year. The study progress requirement is earning at least 50% of the required credits each academic year, and students must maintain satisfactory academic progress to keep their residence permit.

If progress is insufficient, your institution first checks whether you have good reasons. If you do not, it must report that to the IND, and the IND then decides whether you still meet the requirements.

What Does the Decision Letter Look Like in Practice?

The decision goes to your institution in a letter, and it is positive or negative. A positive decision means you will get an MVV and a student residence permit. A negative decision means you will not get either, and you can object to the decision.

This is the first moment a flight becomes sensible. Until the decision letter exists, you do not know that the file succeeded, and you do not know which mission the letter names for the sticker. Your institution then shares an email with your V number, which is your alien registration number.

A Note on the Preparatory Period

Some institutions require extra courses, a language test, or a pre-master before full admission. The student residence permit also gives you a right of residence during that preparatory period, which usually lasts 1 year. If you do not then meet the admission requirements, the institution deregisters you at the IND.

For flight planning, a preparatory year changes little in the first sequence. The sticker, the 90-day period, and the arrival rules are the same. What changes is the longer commitment behind the file, which is worth keeping in mind before you pay for anything non-refundable.

Can You Change Institutions or Study Abroad Later?

During your studies, you may transfer to another educational institution, and your residence permit remains valid. The new institution must be a recognised sponsor, and you and the new institution must both notify the IND of the switch. For international students, that notification is what keeps the permit tied to the right sponsor.

Studying elsewhere in the European Union is possible with a Dutch permit for a limited time, and your institution must notify the IND in time. Time abroad does not pause the study progress check. These later changes do not affect the first sequence, but they explain why the sponsor relationship runs for the whole permit.

Checking the Register Yourself

You can check whether your institution is a recognised sponsor in the IND public register for study. A listing does not replace the university's own checklist, but a missing listing is a reason to ask questions before you transfer any money. The register is the place to confirm status; the university's immigration office is the place to confirm process.

Which Documents Are Required, Conditional, or Only Supporting?

Your university provides a checklist of required documents, and that checklist always wins over a general list. Still, the IND's own rules show which items are fixed and which depend on your situation. Sorting the file into three roles stops you from over-preparing the wrong things and missing the right ones.

The table below maps each item to a role. Required means the application cannot be built without it. Conditional means it applies only when a stated situation is true. Supporting means it helps the file or your travel, but the IND student rules do not make it a condition.

Supporting documents are worth gathering even when they are not conditions, because they save time when a question arises. Keep clean scans of each one, named plainly with your surname and the document type. Your name should be spelled exactly as in the passport on every upload, since the passport is the master record for the whole file.

Which Items Can You Not Skip?

A valid passport comes first, because every later stage reads from it. Your passport number appears on the application, on the sticker, and later on any residence document, so a change of passport mid-process creates a mismatch you will need to explain. Keep the passport that was submitted, and avoid renewing it unless the university tells you to.

Proof of registration is the second fixed item. The IND requires proof of registration or temporary proof of registration as a student at a university or institute of higher professional education. The university generates this itself, usually from its admission system, and you rarely have to fetch it.

Financial proof is the third. The next discussion covers the amount, the age limit, and the six ways to show it.

Which Items Depend on Your Situation?

Official foreign documents must be legalised and translated into Dutch, English, French, or German when they are in another language. That includes a birth certificate if your university asks for one.

Some institutions do ask, and others do not, so follow the checklist rather than guessing. Ask about the translation rule early, because legalisation can take longer than the rest of the preparation.

The IND also requires a yearly appendix: the foreign national's own statement on income within the context of a study. You complete it each study year, not only the first.

If you are funded by someone else, the following documents change. A scholarship needs a scholarship declaration. A company needs the IND statement of financial support plus its own bank statement. A person abroad needs the private-person statement, a copy of the financier's passport, and bank proof.

What About the TB Declaration?

If required, students from specific countries may need to complete a TB test as part of the visa prerequisites. Your university's checklist will say whether this applies to you, and the university tells the IND at the time of application.

Students from specific countries may need to complete a tuberculosis test, and for applicants from India the practical step is to read the checklist line on this subject and sign the declaration if asked.

The test itself happens after arrival. A test taken abroad is not the step the IND describes, because the IND sends you to the public health service in the Netherlands after you have the residence permit. The details sit in the arrival discussion later in this guide.

Where Do Insurance Cover and Identity Records Fit?

Neither is listed as an IND student condition in the way the study norm is. Health insurance arrangements can appear on a university checklist, and the checklist is the authority on whether they must be shown before the application. If it asks, treat it as part of the file. If it does not, keep your insurance paperwork ready for later.

A birth certificate is a conditional item that some university checklists include as identity evidence beyond the passport. Legalisation and translation rules apply when it is requested, so start that task in good time.

What Should You Do About Copies and Originals?

Where the IND accepts a printout or a copy, it still wants the details it names, such as the date and the bank's contact lines. Where it wants an original, as with a foreign bank account statement, a scan alone is not the same thing.

Ask the university whether it takes uploads, couriered originals, or both, and follow its method. Never alter a document yourself, even to fix a small typo.

What Is Not Listed at All?

Notice what the IND student requirements leave out. There is no required hotel booking, no required flight booking, and no required stay proof such as a rental agreement for the first night. A short Schengen visit asks for those. The study route builds on admission, funds, and sponsorship.

That absence is useful. It means you do not have to purchase a fully paid ticket to make the file look complete, and you should not let a third party tell you otherwise. If a university or mission ever asks for a flight plan, it will say so in its own checklist, and you can follow that wording exactly.

How Much Money Must You Show, and How Old Can the Proof Be?

How Much Money Must You Show, and How Old Can the Proof Be?

For 2026, the IND study norm for university and HBO students is €1,130.77 per month, and financial proof must show €1,130.77 per month for 2026. You need €1,130.77 per month for living costs in 2026, which means total living costs for 2026 are €13,569.24 for the year.

What Does the Study Norm Actually Cover?

The study norm equals the amount Dutch students can receive in study benefits when they live in a dorm. It covers living expenses only. Tuition fees are not included in the living cost requirement, so tuition is a separate sum on top.

Financial sufficiency must be proven to cover living expenses and tuition fees. The total financial requirement includes tuition fees plus living costs, even though the IND study norm itself is the living-cost figure. In practice, the university collects tuition on its own timetable and tests the study norm through the IND route.

Real living costs can exceed the IND study norm, especially where housing is expensive. Build a separate budget for rent, deposits, insurance, food and transport; the immigration threshold is not a spending forecast.

The proof also has a time limit. It covers 12 months of living and studying, not the entire duration of your programme. Each study year, you complete the IND appendix with your own statement on income, and the next year's proof is handled then.

What Does the Arithmetic Look Like in Practice?

Twelve times €1,130.77 is €13,569.24. In a fictional case, a student whose own account holds €9,000 is short by €4,569.24, and the gap calls for a financier or a scholarship, not a late top-up. If the university's tuition fee is €10,000, the family prepares €23,569.24 across both purposes, although only the first figure is the IND study norm.

Whose Control Must the Money Be Under?

The financial proof must be under your control or blocked with the university. In IND terms, the money must be freely available to you, or deposited with your educational institution. A balance that you cannot withdraw does not meet the rule, and certificates of deposit count only when they show you may withdraw the money.

A joint account needs a statement saying you may and can use the money. If the funds sit in a bank in your home country, the same rule applies. The university reads the paperwork, so ask it which documents it expects before you request anything from the bank.

Which Ways of Showing the Money Does the IND Accept?

The IND names six ways to show sufficient funds. Each way has its own paperwork, and the university tells you which one it prefers.

  1. The money sits in your own bank account, in your name, and you can freely withdraw it.

  2. You deposit the study norm for a year into the bank account of your educational institution.

  3. You receive a scholarship, shown with a scholarship declaration.

  4. A company pays, with the IND appendix and the company's own bank statement.

  5. A person abroad pays, with the private-person statement, a passport copy, and their bank proof.

  6. A person in the Netherlands pays, with the private-person statement, a BRP extract, a passport copy, and proof of income.

Documents must be in Dutch, English, German, or French. Otherwise, they need to be translated.

What Does the Three-Month Rule Mean for Your Proof?

Financial documents must be no older than three months. All financial documents must be no older than three months, and that covers an original bank statement, a copy of an account statement, or a printout from the bank's website. A foreign bank account also needs an original statement.

Each statement shows the date, your initials and surname, the bank account number, the balance, and the bank's contact details. Check those lines before you hand it over, because an incomplete statement slows the file.

Time the statements to the university's upload deadline. If you pull bank statements in August for a file the university submits in November, they will be stale. Request them as late as the deadline allows.

What If the Funds Fall Short?

If your own balance is below the norm, the IND recognises other ways to show it. A scholarship declaration, a company statement, or a financier abroad or in the Netherlands can each meet the rule when the paperwork is complete.

Ask the university which route it prefers, and gather the other party's documents early, because a financier's bank proof also has to be under three months old.

Do not top up an account only for a day to pass the check. The money must be genuinely available to you, and a sudden deposit without an explanation can raise questions that a clean history avoids.

How Does the Money Rule Link to the Flight?

The link is a matter of order. The money must be in place before the university applies, and the flight comes after the sticker. Spending on a fare before the sticker exists does not add to the proof, and it can reduce the free balance you must show. Keep the funds intact until the file is filed.

Money you hope to earn after arrival is not part of the proof. We would not plan around earnings at the Dutch minimum wage, because the IND tests the sum available when the university applies and not future income.

What Will You Pay in Fees?

The IND lists a €254 application cost for this higher-education residence route as checked on 26 October 2026, paid through the educational institution. Ask your university for its invoice and check the current IND fee page before payment; do not add a separate MVV charge to this route without an actual instruction.

Visa fees are subject to annual adjustments by the Dutch government. Read the current figure for the year of filing, and treat any number from an earlier year as outdated. The university pays the IND, then bills you, and its invoice is the amount to trust.

Do not pay a third party for an IND fee that the university will invoice. If an agent asks for the IND fee up front, check the university's own fee notice first.

What Happens Between the IND Decision and Your Sticker Appointment?

Once the university has filed, the IND says the decision period is 60 days and may be extended if the application is incomplete. Treat that as a legal decision period, not a promised completion date; your university should track the actual file and orientation deadline.

Those are ceilings, not predictions. Most straightforward applications are processed within four weeks. Where a recognised sponsor submits a complete application, the IND usually needs less time than the legal period. Processing times can fluctuate based on application volumes, and the weeks before an autumn start tend to be busy.

How Do You Learn the Result?

Your educational institution receives the decision in an official letter, and it passes the key detail to you.

For a student, the email from the institution containing your V number is enough at the sticker appointment, and you do not need to bring a photocopy of the IND letter. The email is therefore the first document you should save once it arrives.

The letter also decides where you go. It states whether you apply for the sticker at the embassy in New Delhi or at the consulate general in Bangalore or Mumbai.

What Is the V Number and Why Does It Matter?

The V number is your alien registration number. It appears in the IND letter and in the email your institution sends, and it is how the mission links your appointment to the approved file. Copy it exactly, and keep it with your passport details. A wrong digit can slow the appointment, so check it twice.

How Long Do You Have to Book the Appointment?

After the positive decision, you have 3 months to apply for the MVV sticker. Documents must be submitted within three months of approval, so the countdown starts with the decision date and not with the day your university forwards the news.

Appointments are booked online through the VFS Global appointment system that the Dutch missions use in India. You receive an email confirmation once the slot is fixed. If no email arrives, check the spam folder first and then contact NetherlandsWorldwide.

Because of the high number of applicants, appointments fill up quickly. If you cannot get a slot, try again later, since cancellations and rescheduling release new ones. Do not wait until week eleven of the twelve to start looking.

What Must You Bring to the Appointment?

Students should collect their MVV sticker at the designated Dutch embassy or consulate in their home country. For an Indian applicant, bring the following documents, with photocopies where the list asks for them:

  • Your passport and a photocopy of the photo page. It must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of the appointment and contain at least 2 empty pages.

  • A passport photo that meets Dutch requirements.

  • The email from your educational institution with your V number.

  • Any other documents listed in the IND decision letter.

  • Your residence permit or comparable document, only if you are not an Indian national living in India.

A valid passport matters more than any other item. A passport must be valid for at least six months when obtaining the MVV sticker, so check the expiry date now, not on the morning of the appointment. If the passport has too little time left, renew it before you book, and tell your university of the new passport number.

What Happens to Your Passport After You Hand It In?

You hand in your passport at the appointment and get it back only when the sticker is ready or when it is delivered. The embassy does not issue the sticker on the day. The MVV is typically ready within 10 business days, and the wait can run to a full 10 working days.

You also receive a tracking code to follow the status online, and an automatic email tells you when the document is ready. Plan your own calendar around those 10 working days. A trip to another country with your passport still at the embassy will not work.

What Can You Do While the Embassy Holds Your Passport?

Plan around the wait. Do not schedule other travel, and keep a photocopy of the photo page and the receipt in your folder. Watch the tracking code, and check your spam folder for the ready notice. Decide in advance whether a courier or an in-person pickup suits your city, because that choice is made at the appointment.

How Does Delivery or Collection Work?

At the appointment, you choose between collecting the passport yourself and having it sent. If you want it sent, arrange the DTDC courier service before the appointment. DTDC asks for a payment of 850 Indian rupees for an Airway Bill number, and each envelope serves only one applicant. A group applying together needs one number per person.

You write your address, mobile number, passport number, and the AWB number on the envelope in block letters, and you bring a signed disclaimer form to the appointment. Keep the AWB text message safe, because you cannot ask for the envelope without it.

If you collect in person, bring the application receipt and a valid identity document. Someone else may collect for you with their own identity document, the receipt, and a signed authorisation letter. You do not need an appointment to collect.

What Should You Check When the Sticker Arrives?

Check the information on the sticker as soon as you hold it. The name and the period of validity are the two lines that matter most. If anything is wrong, tell the desk at once or contact the mission where you applied, because a correction made in India costs far less than one made on arrival.

The document goes by several names. MVV visa sticker is the formal one, and some guides call it an entry sticker. Trust the wording printed on your own document. The next discussion explains how to read its dates.

When Should You Book the Flight, and Is a Paid Ticket Needed First?

You do not need a fully paid ticket to apply. The IND student requirements do not call for flight proof at any stage, so nothing in the sponsor application depends on a ticket. Students are not required to purchase a fully paid flight ticket before receiving MVV approval, and that single fact removes most of the pressure to book early.

A flight earns its place later, once the sticker exists. At that point, the sticker's dates, your university's orientation schedule, and your housing plan all point to one arrival window, and a booking can fit it.

What Do the Sticker Dates Actually Allow?

The MVV sticker is generally valid for 90 days after issuance. The 90-day period starts on the date shown under 'issued on', and you must collect your residence permit from the IND within that time. Students must enter the Netherlands within the validity period of their MVV, so the sticker, not the university calendar, sets the outer limit.

Two lines then frame the entry window. 'From' is the first day you can enter the Schengen area, and 'Until' marks the end of the validity period. For an MVV, read both dates carefully, because the first day you may fly is the 'From' date, not the day the sticker was printed.

The type letter on the sticker should read D, which marks an authorisation for temporary stay, the MVV. The 'valid for' line may list only the Netherlands.

The sticker is also valid for travel through other Schengen countries, and you may enter and exit the Schengen area more than once while it is valid, but you may not stay more than 90 days in a country other than the Netherlands.

If you route through a Caribbean part of the Kingdom, note that the sticker is not valid there. That matters little for a typical India to Amsterdam flight, yet it matters if a cheap connection uses such a stop.

How Does Orientation Week Set Your Arrival Date?

Travel plans should align with the university's orientation schedule so that you arrive on time. Orientation often includes enrolment steps, housing keys, and bank or registration appointments, and missing the start can delay each of them.

A sensible arrival is a few days before orientation. That leaves time to collect keys, find your way around, and register with the municipality without rushing. Counting backward from the orientation date, the sticker's 'From' date must already have passed, and the 'Until' date must still be ahead.

Which Evidence Is Which?

If you are comparing a temporary onward-style document with a visa reservation, first clarify what a dummy ticket means. Neither document replaces the Dutch sponsor decision, MVV sticker or the issued ticket needed to fly.

Three different things can all be called a flight document, and they are not interchangeable. A flight reservation is a booking record that holds a seat or shows a planned route. An issued ticket is a paid, ticketed seat with an airline. Boarding evidence is the boarding pass you receive at check-in.

For this route, the IND asks for none of them. The airline will want your issued ticket and your passport with the sticker at check-in, so the ticket is the item you need for the actual flight. A reservation is only a planning aid, and it should never be described as an issued ticket.

If you still want a dated reservation in your own planning folder, a flight reservation from BookForVisa.com offers a verifiable PNR, unlimited changes, and an instant PDF download for $15, and it remains a reservation, not an issued ticket.

What Should the Booking Match?

Compare the proposed arrival with the university’s own arrival instructions, accommodation start, passport name and the sticker’s actual validity window; a generic short-stay itinerary checklist does not replace this MVV sequence.

The traveller name must match the passport, and the arrival date must sit inside the sticker's dates. Your intended stay is the whole study period, and the sticker covers the entry, while the residence permit covers the entire period of your studies. In this example, the first flight should get the student to Amsterdam on a sensible day; another Dutch arrival airport can work when the onward journey is realistic.

A university may ask for your arrival date so it can plan keys and orientation. Give it the date only when the flight is certain, and tell it promptly if the date changes.

In What Order Should the Stages Run?

The decision-to-travel sequence runs in nine stages, and each one waits for the one before it:

  1. Admission to a full-time programme at a recognised sponsor.

  2. Documents and funds delivered to the university.

  3. The university files the combined application with the IND.

  4. The IND decides, and the university receives the letter.

  5. You book the sticker appointment and attend it.

  6. The sticker is issued, and you check its details.

  7. You book and pay for the real flight within the 'From' and 'Until' dates.

  8. You travel and enter the Netherlands.

  9. You register, take the TB step if it applies, and collect the residence permit.

The flight is stage seven for a reason. Before the sticker, a booked fare may fall outside the valid dates. After the sticker, you can choose a date with certainty.

What If Your University Wants You There Sooner?

Some programmes start with a compulsory arrival week or a housing deadline that sits earlier than your ideal flight. Tell the university as soon as the sticker appointment is booked, so it knows when your passport will be back. If the earliest sticker date still lands after its deadline, ask in writing whether a later arrival is acceptable.

How Much Time Should You Leave Between Sticker and Flight?

Leave at least a week between holding the sticker and flying, and more if your passport is delivered by courier. Delivery can take several days, and you cannot board without the sticker in the passport.

A longer gap reduces risk in the other direction. The 90-day period begins at issue, so every day you wait before flying is a day removed from the time you have to collect your residence permit. A booking made two or three weeks before orientation, with the sticker already in hand, is a comfortable middle path.

What If You Need to Move the Flight After Booking?

Ask about change rules before paying. A paid ticket with a fixed date makes the sticker's limits harder to manage, and it can trap you if the university moves orientation or your housing starts late. Look for a fare that allows a change on the same dates the sticker allows.

Do not move a date beyond the 'Until' line of the sticker without first asking the IND. A late arrival can cause serious trouble with the permit, so ask the IND or your university before you accept it.

What Does a Document-to-Date Worksheet Look Like for a Delhi Applicant?

The worksheet below is fictional. Daniel Foster lives in Delhi and has accepted a place at a fictional Dutch university for a February 2027 start.

His university's orientation week begins on Monday 25 January 2027, and classes start on 1 February 2027. Every date below is invented, and every rule behind it comes from the IND or the Dutch foreign ministry's NetherlandsWorldwide site.

The study norm figure is a 2026 amount, and the file in this example is filed in 2026, so the 2026 figure applies. A file filed after 1 January uses whatever amount the IND lists then.

How Does the Worksheet Read Row by Row?

Start at the top and work down. The first five rows cover the sponsor and the money, and they must be right before the university acts. The IND requires proof of €13,569.24 for living costs in 2026, and Daniel's statement dated 2 November shows it. Because the statement is under three months old on filing day, it passes.

Rows six to nine belong to the IND and the university. The university files on 12 November; the legal decision date would be 11 January 2027, and the actual letter arrives on 30 November. Daniel learns of it from the university's email, which carries his V number.

Rows ten to sixteen are the Indian leg. He books a New Delhi slot for 8 December, buys the courier number five days earlier, and confirms that his passport is valid well beyond June 2027. The sticker is ready before the 10-working-day limit, and its issue date of 17 December starts the 90-day period.

Where Does the Flight Fit in This Example?

Rows seventeen and eighteen are the flight rows, and they depend on everything above. Daniel books on 28 December, after the sticker is in his passport and the courier has delivered it. He flies on 16 January, nine days before orientation.

That date is inside the sticker's dates. It is after the 'From' date, and it leaves the 'Until' date of 17 March ahead as a safety margin. He has not paid for anything before the sticker existed, so a delay at any earlier stage costs him nothing.

What Would Have Gone Wrong With an Early Booking?

Suppose Daniel had bought a non-refundable fare on 2 November for a 3 January flight. The university files on 12 November, but the IND letter could arrive any time up to 11 January. If the letter arrived on 8 January, the appointment, the 10 working days, and the courier delivery would all push past his flight date.

He would lose the fare or pay a change fee, and orientation would be at risk. That is the cost of booking before the sticker. A reservation with free changes would have reduced the loss, but the safest design is to wait.

What If the Sticker Dates Are Tighter Than Expected?

Consider a second case. The decision letter arrives late, the first appointment slot is 4 January, and the sticker is issued on 14 January. The 90-day period now ends in mid-April, which is plenty, but orientation on 25 January leaves only 11 days.

In that case, Daniel books the earliest sensible flight after the sticker arrives and skips the ideal buffer. He asks the university whether a later arrival is acceptable for housing and enrolment, and he keeps the courier option in mind to avoid a return trip to the embassy.

How Do You Build Your Own Version?

Copy the table into a spreadsheet and replace each entry. Keep the rule column as it is, because it keeps your own file honest. Fill in the dates you know, leave the rest blank, and update as each stage completes.

Never enter your passport number, a payment detail, or a login in a shared sheet. Dates and rule names are enough. The worksheet is a planning tool, and the IND decision letter and your university's emails remain the documents that count.

A final tip: highlight the three dates that cannot move, the appointment deadline, the 'Until' date, and the orientation date. Everything else can slide between them, and those three show you how much room you really have.

What Goes Wrong After the Sticker, and How Do You Fix It?

Most mistakes on this route happen in the weeks between the sticker and the first month in the Netherlands. They are small, and almost all of them have a clear fix if you spot them early. The list below runs in the order they tend to appear.

The Sticker Shows the Wrong Name or Dates

Check the name and the validity period at the desk before you leave the mission. A mistake on the sticker is easier to correct at the counter than from abroad. If you spot one later, contact the mission where you applied and ask what it needs from you.

Compare the sticker with your passport page and your university's records. The spelling must match exactly, including the order of given names and surnames. Students must verify their documents before traveling, including their visa validity and passport details.

The Sticker and the Passport Get Separated

A sticker is valid only for the passport it is affixed to. If you hold a second passport, travel with the one that carries the sticker. If that passport expires, bring the new one together with the old one, as long as the sticker in the old passport is legible and undamaged.

This is why changing a passport between application and travel is risky. Tell your university at once if a new passport number is issued.

The Flight Lands Outside the Sticker's Dates

A flight before the 'From' date, or after the 'Until' date, breaks the file. If the date is wrong, change it before travelling and check the airline's change terms. If your arrival slips beyond the sticker, contact the IND before you do anything else, because the 90-day period leaves very little room.

The simplest prevention is to book after the sticker is in hand. The worksheet earlier in this guide shows how the dates stack.

Arrival Day: Collecting Your Permit Card

On arrival, the sticker is only half the document. You or your sponsor will receive a message from the IND telling you when you can collect your residence permit. To do so, you make an appointment at an IND desk, and the sticker must still be valid on the day you collect it.

When your student residence permit is ready at the IND desk, your educational institution receives a letter. Some institutions arrange collection days with the IND office, so follow the instructions you are given. Check the details on the residence card at the desk while you are still there, and tell the IND staff member at once if anything is wrong.

Once the card is in your hand, it is the document that counts. The IND residence document is the proof of your right to stay, and the sticker has done its job.

Registering in Your New City

After arriving in the Netherlands, students must register at their local municipality. Municipal registration is also normally how a newcomer obtains a citizen service number, which banks, health insurers, and employers ask for. Book the registration appointment early, because slots in student cities fill up before term.

Bring the documents your university or the municipality lists. A rental contract or host statement is typically among them, so keep your housing paperwork together from the day you land.

The TB Step

If your university indicated at the time of application that you would take a TB test, you now arrange it. Make an appointment with the public health service, the GGD, within three months after you receive the residence permit. Take the TB referral form with you.

Students from certain countries are exempt, and the IND publishes an appendix of exempt nationalities. Your university's checklist tells you whether the test applies to you, and a test taken abroad is not the step the IND describes.

Working, Insurance, and Study Progress

Your permit says that a work permit is required for additional work, and other work as an employee is not permitted. An employer needs a work permit (TWV) for you.

You may work up to 16 hours a week, or full-time in June, July, and August. Self-employment is allowed as long as you meet the permit conditions and you register with the Chamber of Commerce.

Your university's arrival information is the place to confirm the health insurance steps. Study progress runs quietly in the background: you must obtain at least 50% of the credits each year.

After graduation, you can apply for a permit to look for work, or for work as a highly skilled migrant, with a lower income requirement for graduates. That is a later decision, but it explains why the first permit year deserves care.

How Does Study Progress Show Up in Year Two?

Your institution assesses your progress and tells you whether you obtained enough credits. If it does not, it checks whether you have good reasons under the Higher Education and Research Act. If it finds none, it must report the matter to the IND, which then assesses whether you still meet the requirements.

Ask your programme office how credits are counted before the first exam period.

Where Does the Sticker Stop Mattering?

After you collect the residence permit, the card is the principal proof of your right to stay; keep the MVV sticker in your passport and check the current travel rules before a later journey. Keep the old sticker page with your records, but do not rely on it for travel after the card is issued.

Before you book a trip home, check the IND information on travelling with a residence permit and a return visa, since the rules for later journeys differ from the first one.

What Should You Check Before You Book or Board?

Run this check twice: once when the sticker arrives and again a week before the flight. The first pass catches errors while a correction is still easy. The second confirms that nothing has changed since, such as a new orientation date or a delayed courier delivery.

The Money and Sponsor Checks

  • Your institution appears in the IND register as a recognised sponsor for study, and your programme is accredited and full-time.

  • The proof of funds matches the amount the IND lists for the filing year. You must show €13,569.24 for living costs in 2026, and tuition is handled separately.

  • Every financial document was no more than three months old on the day the university filed.

  • The decision letter arrived at the university, and you hold the email with your V number.

The Sticker Checks

  • Your name matches the passport exactly.

  • The type shows D, and the issue date, 'From' date, and 'Until' date make sense for your plan.

  • The passport you will fly with is the one that carries the sticker.

  • The sticker's 90-day period leaves time to collect your residence permit after arrival, not only time to land.

The Flight Checks

  • The booking is made after the sticker is in your hands, and it falls within the 'From' and 'Until' dates.

  • The arrival date suits the orientation schedule, with a few days of margin.

  • Your intended stay is the full study period, and the flight date serves only the arrival window.

  • If you hold only a reservation, you also hold, or will buy, an issued ticket before the airline's check-in. A reservation is not boarding evidence.

  • The routing avoids the Caribbean parts of the Kingdom, or you have checked the entry rules for them separately.

The Arrival Checks

  • You know where and when the residence permit will be collected, and you know the IND desk or the campus event that handles it.

  • A municipal registration appointment is booked, and your housing paperwork is ready for it.

  • The TB step is on your calendar if your university said it applies, with the three-month limit noted.

  • Health insurance arrangements match your university's arrival instructions.

Which Amounts Change Every Year?

Several amounts reset each 1 January. The study norm, the fees, and some processing practices can differ from one year to the next. If your start date straddles New Year, check the current IND amounts before you transfer money.

Rules from older guides, including figures from previous years, can mislead. Treat the university checklist and the IND pages as the live reference, and use anything else as background only.

What Should You Do If a Date Fails?

If a date no longer works, change the lowest-cost item first. A flight with free changes is cheaper to move than a sticker is to reissue. If the sticker itself is the problem, tell the university immediately and ask the mission what it needs.

Do not wait until the day before departure to discover that the sticker's 'Until' date has passed. Check the date the day you hold the sticker and set a reminder for a week before the flight.

What Should You Carry on the Day?

Carry the passport with the sticker, the university's acceptance or admission email, your V number email, and the address of your first night. Keep them in hand luggage and not in a checked bag. Border staff may ask about your study plans, and clear paperwork answers most questions in seconds.

The Final Folder

Keep one folder, on paper and on your phone, with the passport copy, the sticker photo, the university emails, the decision letter or V number email, the flight document, and your first-week addresses. The folder is for you and for the airline, and nothing in it replaces the sticker itself.

Neither the IND nor the mission lists a flight among the documents for the student sticker appointment. Your folder is practical, not mandatory.

What Is the Safest Order for a Student Flying From India to the Netherlands?

For a student from India, the safest order is fixed: university application first, IND decision second, sticker third, flight last. Each step controls the next, and the flight is the only one you can still move cheaply. Book it when the sticker is in your passport, and its dates are clear.

Use the worksheet, keep the three-month rule in mind, and check the sticker before you pay. A reservation can help with planning, but it never replaces the sponsor approval, the IND decision, or the sticker.

Need a dated flight plan while the MVV sequence settles? Prepare a reservation that reflects your intended arrival window, then update it when the actual sticker dates and university schedule are known. Do not present it as a paid ticket or as an IND requirement.

Student MVV Flight Questions

Can I Buy My Ticket Before the IND Decision?

You can, but you do not need to, and the cost of being wrong is high. Students are not required to purchase a fully paid flight ticket before receiving MVV approval. The decision date, the appointment date, and the sticker dates are all unknown until the IND acts.

Does the IND Ask for a Flight Reservation at Any Stage?

The IND student requirements for a university or HBO permit list admission, accreditation, sponsor status, full-time study, income, and study progress. They do not list a flight booking. The sticker appointment asks for your passport, photo, V-number email, and any documents named in the IND letter.

How Long Is the Sticker Valid?

The sticker is valid for 90 days from the issue date. You must collect your residence permit in the Netherlands within that time. The 'From' and 'Until' lines on the sticker show the period for entering, so read them as soon as you receive it.

Can Someone Else Collect My Passport?

Yes. That person brings their own valid identity document, your receipt, and an authorisation letter with their full name, signed by you. You do not need to book an appointment to collect the passport with the sticker.

What If My Passport Is About to Expire?

It must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of the appointment and have at least 2 empty pages. If it is close to the limit, renew it before you book the appointment, and tell your university so that its records follow the new passport.

Can I Travel Through Another Schengen Country?

Yes, the sticker also works for travel through other Schengen countries, and you may enter and exit the Schengen area several times while it is valid. You may not stay more than 90 days in a Schengen country other than the Netherlands.

Do I Need the Tuberculosis Test?

It depends on nationality, and your university's checklist says whether it applies. If it does, you make an appointment with the GGD within three months after you receive the residence permit, and you take the referral form.

Can I Apply for the Sticker in a Different Indian City?

Yes. You may apply at a different location in India from the one the IND letter names, and no permission is needed from the IND, the embassy, or the consulate general. Choose the location with the earliest appointment.

What If No Appointments Are Available?

Appointments fill up quickly because of the high number of applicants. Try again later, since cancellations and rescheduling release slots. Keep the three-month window in mind and start looking on the first day.

Does a Reservation Count as an Issued Ticket?

No. A reservation is a planning record. An issued ticket is the paid seat the airline checks at the airport, and boarding evidence is the pass you receive at check-in. Keep the three apart in your folder.

Who Can Answer Questions About My Case?

For the sticker appointment, contact NetherlandsWorldwide. For the application or the permit itself, contact the IND. For documents, deadlines, and fees, your university's immigration office is the first stop.

Friendly reminder: BookForVisa provides travel-proof documents for planning and visa-application support. Requirements vary by destination, consulate, visa category and applicant situation. A flight reservation can support a file, but it does not guarantee approval, boarding or entry.
